I listened to Chuck Schumer on Meet the Press this morning. He is so weak, so awful, so unconvincing. I get the argument being made by @Fnord and others. I really do. This shutdown is the only way for Democrats to defy Trump for at least another year. I get the desire to “let it all burn down”. Except that won’t happen. Because with Schumer the Democrats just don’t have the leadership to carry this fight through to the end. What will happen instead is that shutdown will start, Trump will start firing people, and Schumer will cave after a few weeks. It’s entirely predictable. Conservatives will cheer Trump, independents will blame the Democrats, and the Democratic base will be infuriated and start primarying anyone who goes along with Schumer which will jeopardize next years elections. It’s entirely predictable.

I made an interesting argument 10 years ago when this film had its 30th anniversary; it was more pertinent then because of the plot of the movie, but it’s still relevant now: I think the cultural changes to our society between 1955 and 1985 (featured in the movie) are much more significant than the cultural changes since the movie was made. In terms of technology it’s the opposite: the technological advancements between 1955 and 1985 are not nearly as significant as the technological advancements since the film was made (and this despite the fact that the first sequel to the movie offers a glimpse of a future predicted for 2015 that was far in advance of what we actually achieved by then.) Just my opinion but I always thought this an interesting topic.

One of the many many flaws in this thread is that the guy who started it apparently can’t conceive of the idea that some of us might care about other people. For example, the Big Ugly Bill is going to hurt a lot of folks on the poorer side who will no longer have access to health benefits. It won’t affect me, I can afford my own health insurance. Others can’t. And I am concerned about them. To @seafoam1 and all too many other Trump supporters, empathy for other people is a foreign concept. They just don’t get it.

Andrew McCarthy is a guy I at times disagree with (he is very conservative) but one I always enjoy reading because he is extremely smart, and, I believe, has integrity. You lack either attribute IMO. You wrote that you disagree with him here. I think you should explain why. I doubt you will, or even can. I doubt you even bothered to read his arguments. But if I’m wrong here’s your chance to prove it.

Yeah I’m kinda concerned this will be thrown out too quickly on a technicality. Given that the judge is a Biden appointee that will allow Trump and MAGA to simply argue that it’s the Deep State protecting their own. I would almost rather it go to trial so that the public can see what a farce and embarrassment this is.

I’m not really interested in responding to you but I do want to comment on this one point because you and others keep bringing it up. I know a LOT of liberals in real life. I don’t know a single one who is in favor of allowing transgenders to participate in girls athletics. Not one including myself. I think it’s stupid and I generally support trans issues. It’s just that none of us really care too much. You’re talking about .001% of athletes. It’s rarely decisive to outcome. And one a list of priorities to consider for an election, it’s at the bottom or, more likely not on the list. That it’s apparently pretty high for some of you is fascinating and, IMO, pretty pathetic. It is also very ironic since many of the people who dwell on this issue the most are the same dudes who denigrate girls sports at every opportunity and oppose Title IX. I should add that the leading candidate for the Democratic nominee for President in 2028, Gavin Newsom, also opposes this. So hopefully that will take it off the table.

Just reading this morning that the National Weather Service is exhausted and lacks manpower from all the cuts Trump and Musk made earlier this year. If another brutal storm hits they’re Ill-prepared to deal with it. You kind of ignored #1. The reason I listed it first is because I believe it will be the most important. Though I think my 2nd and 3rd points will also be relevant to the “normies”, if by that you mean the general public which doesn’t pay attention to politics most of the time. The polls already show that is the case.

This is way off. The Democrats have a very easy message to win in both 2026 and 2028: 1. The tariffs are causing higher prices and hurting the economy. 2. The big ugly bill took away your healthcare in order to give tax breaks to billionaires. 3. Trump is usurping power left and right and acting like a king or dictator. Thats it. It’s not difficult. They’re incompetent but they’ll figure this out.

Hitler ran a coporatist state in which he was perfectly willing to interfere with free enterprise in all areas. That was the socialist part of national socialism. Trump is equally willing to interfere in the marketplace.

Please explain the specific points by McCarthy that you disagree with and why. This will be good.

He pardoned Hunter, and others, because he knew that Trump would pull the exact kind of sh!t he’s pulling right now. Should have pardoned Comey too. How can you not be embarrassed by what is happening? Is there no bottom for Trump supporters?
