LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs
The Real timschochet replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
I approved of most of Biden’s economic policies. (Not his tariffs.) So you won’t find much. But it’s not really comparable. Neither is any discussion of tax cuts, or spending cuts, or anything else Trump is proposing. These tariffs are something completely different from anything any President has ever done, perhaps in our entire history. We can’t even use past tariffs as an analogy. There is no analogy. Trump is attempting to reshape the entirety of world trade. Perhaps you think this is a good thing. Most economists do not. Trump believes the system we have now is unfair to the USA. Perhaps you agree with him. But it is a system that has provided us tremendous prosperity over our lifetimes. I don’t see why we should throw it away. -

Just because I vote Democrat doesn’t mean I agree with them on every issue. -

You know unlike some of the idiots in this thread you don’t strike me as a kool-aid drinker. Forget about me, what I think. I can’t find a single economist out there, conservative or liberal, willing to defend this. Not one. Can you? They all think this is total insanity. I know a fool like @jbycho doesn’t care; he and @Horseman and others look at my reaction and think “owning the libs!” and that’s all they give a crap about. I figured you were different. You’ve shown some thoughtfulness in the past. This is going to be bad. How bad I don’t know. Not the end of the world. But catastrophe, that word seems about right IF Trump sticks to his guns here. -

Oh Fock off already. Im not predicting the end of the world. I’m predicting bad economic times and a lot of unnecessary suffering, until Trump reverses himself (which hopefully will be soon.) -

Thanks for your concern but I’m doing fine. And I don’t wish others to suffer either including you. I want everyone to do well. Unfortunately we are staring at an economic catastrophe of our own design. Completely unnecessary. -

Lol dude you think you know about me but you don’t. Dump the personal comments and stick to offering wretched and false political analysis: it’s what you’re good at. -

More good analysis: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/31/business/trump-tariffs-higher-prices.html In essence President Trump is making the same mistake that leftists do when they call for austerity methods to combat climate change: leftists like AOC think the public is willing to accept hardships in the name of the environment. Trump thinks the public is willing to accept hardships in the name of nationalism. The public won’t accept either. The public doesn’t like pain in exchange for some nebulous goal. If you are a conservative reading this please understand: unless Trump can be talked out of these tarrifs all of the reasons you voted for him will be for naught. Everything else that he is trying to do, that you voted for, will be swept aside because these tariffs will bring about much misery followed by a Democratic landslide. -

Very nice of you. 1. Can’t really go on the booz tour as my wife is many years sober, though I have tried a few drinks including the Grenade. 2. Tipitina’s and the Spotted Cat are both on my list. 3. I am trying out a muffaletta sandwich at Serio’s. Excellent! -

Your suspicion is based on the fact that you don’t like liberalism. That’s it, you have no facts to go on. -

Well sure maybe if you put it that way. Theres 57,000 people in Greenland. You sure you want to spend that? (Keep in mind that almost all of the money we spent for Ukraine went to our own defense industries.) -

You’re correct I have no clue, so hopefully you can explain it to me. Greenland is owned by Denmark which is part of NATO. Russia will never seize it because, since it is part of NATO, that would start WWIII. Why is it in our strategic interests to own it instead of Denmark, at the risk of alienating Western Europe? What exactly do we gain that we don’t have now? We currently have use of their waterways and without any fees or penalty, for both our military and merchant ships. So how would ownership benefit us? Please explain became I don’t get it. -
