We already have a US friendly trade agreement with Canada which Trump negotiated and called the greatest deal ever.

And if he was I have no problem deporting him. But the government needs to prove this, and all reporting is that they’re not even trying to. We’ll see what happens at the court hearing but it sure sounds like at this point they’re going to try and deport him without offering any specific evidence of his crimes. If that’s the case I have a real problem with this, don’t you?

This plan to replace taxes with tariffs isn’t going to work. It’s incredibly idiotic. It also flies in the face of the arguments that most Trump defenders have made which is that these tarrifs are temporary means to achieve some concession from our trading partner. The flaw in Trump’s thinking stems from his refusal to accept the fact that the cost of tariffs are passed on to the consumer.

Um yeah. In fact, with one exception (Donald Trump) former Presidents ALWAYS disappear particularly during the first couple of years of the new President’s term. It’s a tradition to say nothing and make no public appearances whatsoever.

I actually get what he’s saying and he’s not defending Hitler or the Holocaust. He’s pointing out that one man couldn’t have carried it out; it took the German bureaucracy, He is also implying that the larger the state, the more oppressive the state, hence the need for severe cuts to the public sector even beyond the question of waste (which is, prior to this tweet, the main justification Musk has offered for his actions.) This is an ideological argument, and from a libertarian standpoint I understand it. But I think it’s misapplied to our society. While our federal government has proven to be wasteful at times, it’s not been oppressive (despite Kafkaesque anecdotes to the contrary). We are not Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union.

There is however a country out there in which the vast majority of its citizens DO wish to be the 51st state: it’s called Puerto Rico.

You really don’t understand liberals at all do you? Not everything is transactional. Liberals are opposed to this because the Canadian people don’t want it.

But what does #4 mean? We had an excellent trade deal with Canada which Trump negotiated. Compared to other countries it was very fair. So what is the purpose of antagonizing them? I think Trump must be serious about annexation because I can’t come up with any other reason for the tariffs.

I think Schumer made the right decision. Even if Dems had shut down the government they would have folded in a month anyhow; that’s what happens every time. I get that Democrats hate what Trump is doing and want to fight. Me too. But the only way to do so right now is to talk about what we want and try to win in two years.

That won’t hurt us but the European tariffs placed on our liquor will. Quite a bit of our liquor sales are international. Expect sales and job losses in Kentucky, Wisconsin and Napa Valley. This whole thing is a stupid disaster. We gain nothing.

Actually Ukraine hasn’t lost any ground. It remains a stalemate. Ukraine has agreed to everything Trump wanted; Russia has not. The obvious choice now is to keep supporting Ukraine until Russia comes to the table. But will that happen?

Since that would have comprised about 70% of the entire population this seems an odd question.

Undocumented immigrants who came here looking for a better life and who have not committed violent crimes deserve amnesty and a path to citizenship. Not deportation. Sanctuary cities, by refusing to cooperate with the federal government in rounding up innocent people and turning them in, assist with that ultimate goal. And it allows some of us to sleep better at night knowing that we are not Vichy French collaborators.

Right. Now if some similar pandemic happens a year from now I think it may be OK to take a hard look at Trump cutting CDC spending, putting in RFK, removing us from the WHO, etc. I believe all of those items will have a bad effect on our ability to deal with medical situations that arise. But it’s far too early yet.

Yes it was. But not nearly as terrible as these new tariffs. They are catastrophic. And what’s happening in the stock market isn’t healthy, it’s stupid and unnecessary. Kind of like yourself.

There was NOTHING inevitable about this. It’s all on Trump.

Canadians are boycotting the USA. No products of ours being purchased. Vacations cancelled. We’re going to lose billions due to one man’s stupidity.

99% of economists: “the current stock market dip is due to Trump’s tarrifs”. Horseman at FFT: “They’re all morons! This was inevitable!” I’m really having trouble deciding who is right here. It’s a conundrum.
