Discussion of Concerns for Trump Presidency
The Real timschochet replied to jerryskids's topic in The Geek Club
OK that’s not what was reported. If what he’s saying is what Trump is going to do, I can accept that. (Still don’t agree but I can deal with it.) But again, Trump is saying something different. So I guess we’ll see. This gives me hope. -
Discussion of Concerns for Trump Presidency

Because the timing doesn’t work. For this to have made a difference in 2020 the vaccine would have had to be not only released but distributed to the public at least a few months before the election. That didn’t happen until March of 2021. -
This is the meltdown I was hoping for.

Have to believe this has always been one of the main motivating forces behind the MAGA crowd. -

The new Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick strikes me as a smart guy and a decent guy. Unfortunately, like Trump, he appears to view broad tariffs not as a negotiating tool but as a permanent fixture. I don’t really understand how any one versed at all in economics could believe this. But I guess we will learn shortly. Unlike almost everything else that Trump is proposing, he can pretty much do whatever he wants with regard to tariffs without Comgressional approval. -
Not only that, since when is the New York Times the same as the prosecutors’ office?
-
I could totally live with this. I appreciate you’re trying to be thoughtful about this. In the past, even during his last Presidency, Trump has at times suggested such an option. But upon seeing the negative reaction from the far right he immediately withdrew it. Who knows? Maybe he’ll offer it again. I’ve always sensed he’s nowhere near as hardline on this stuff as his rhetoric.

Yes it is a crime. And @Hardcore troubadour is correct, crossing the border without papers is a felony and a federal crime. Overstaying your visa is a misdemeanor. Both are crimes, and ought to be punished. We simply disagree on the punishment. I think the punishment for these crimes, if they’re the only ones, ought to be in the nature of fines. Deportation could be on the table so long as there is a statute of limitations. But in general I don’t believe in rounding up masses of people and deporting them, whether we separate them from their families or not. I find that to be inhumane treatment and, IMO, unAmerican. Thats a fundamental position with me, it’s not gonna change no matter how many elections my side loses. But I get that it’s a minority opinion (and shrinking every day.)
-
The first “crime” is misdemeanor. I don’t think it’s a serious crime to be punished on an equal level with the second. Do you?

Immigrant A comes here without papers across the border, works hard, never breaks the laws, tries to support his family. Immigrant B comes here without papers across the border, rapes and murders. Are you really saying these two examples are no different in your eyes? To be treated exactly the same? They’re both “criminals” to you ?
-
One way to define the Trump years is the constant attempt by conservatives here and elsewhere to sanitize him. He makes a racist remark about immigrants, you guys say he’s only talking about the really bad ones. He says immigration is awful; you guys say he’s only talking about illegal immigrants. He says he doesn’t want immigrants from dark skinned countries, you guys say he doesn’t want to import poverty here. And so forth.

Your distinctions do not match the rhetoric of Trump or the MAGA crowd in general.
-
My post offered you evidence of why what I wrote is correct. If you feel otherwise then you’re welcome to explain why I am wrong about this.
-
Well you’re welcome to tell me what that is.

The MAGA opposition to immigration is not rooted in legality, it is rooted in ethnicity. This is pretty easy to prove: about half of all those who are here illegally come here legally on guest or student visas and simply overstay their welcome. Yet these folks are never the focus of the MAGA crowd; neither are those who come here across our Canadian border. MAGA is almost 100% concerned with those who come across our southern border; in addition, they are almost equally concerned with refugees who come here legally from “sh!thole countries” along with Muslims.

Old Maid to the White Courtesy Phone Please

Lol well here’s the other thing, Jerry. What I think about this doesn’t make a bit of difference. I have no influence whatsoever regarding the Democratic Party and never will (and never want to either.) So maybe they’ll take your advice. Or not. -

The wife loves that show but I just never could get into it. I like that actor though. -

There’s a lot of things I think they did wrong and on some of them we probably agree. But none of it really matters, because in the end the Democrats are the OTHER PARTY. They may become more centrist next time around (which I personally would prefer) or they may go more leftist or they may stay the same. And none of it makes a whit of difference. If the public is happy with the economy 4 years from now the Republicans will win again. If the public is unhappy with the economy the Democrats will win. The formula is pretty simple. I admit it has taken me a while, really my whole life, to figure this out. What impressed me most about this election is that Trump ignored all of his advisors who told him to stay on track and appear moderate. Instead during the campaign he just kept saying crazier and crazier sh!t. A lot of it was truly embarrassing. In the end the public paid no attention. Per the exit polling, they voted for Trump because they didn’t like the current state of affairs and he was the alternative. Me, I was hung up on positive vs negative messaging and comparing Kamala’s positive rhetoric to JFK, Reagan and Obama. I forgot that all 3 of those were the alternative to the government that was then in power. Kamala was doomed because she wasn’t new, she was tied to Biden. So from now on when I look at Presidential elections I’m going to use a simple formula: 1. If things are perceived as going good, the party in power will be re-elected. 2. if things are perceived as going badly, the opposite party will win. 3. If one party has served for 8 years or longer it’s very likely the opposite party wins whether or not things are going good or bad, simply because after a while the public hungers for something new. And that’s it. Those 3 rules seem to work no matter what the specific policies are, no matter who is running. -

Hey @OldMaid good to have you back. You weren’t wrong. You were right. It was the public that got it wrong. -
I doubt it. Because they don’t really want the consequences of this either. They want the show. If there is high profile coverage of a few thousand people being rounded up and deported (and especially if there is high profile coverage of liberals being outraged) that will be enough for most MAGA folks. Thats the win they’re looking for.

MSDNC begging Trump to be friends
The Real timschochet replied to RaiderHaters Revenge's topic in The Geek Club
I think most of MSNBC’s audience is exhausted right about now and all the news (for them) is bad. So they don’t want to see it. They’ll turn it on again in a few months I suspect. -
All for show. The MAGA folks are gonna love the show coming up in a few months. Liberals, including myself, are going to hate the show. We will scream, rightfully, about cruelty, and the MAGAS will enjoy the screaming and behave like a$$holes, basically. But in the end very little will change.
