HateAid CEO says free speech is dangerous
The Real timschochet replied to Frozenbeernuts's topic in The Geek Club
This particular symbol, in Germany, causes violence to occur. So I have to disagree with you. -

Refusing to obey a law is not the same as committing violence against others. I reject your comparison -

Actually feel free to call me an idiot but I didn’t come up with this concept. It was the United States at the Nuremberg trials who developed the legal notion that individuals not only have the right but the DUTY to disobey laws they regard as immoral. Of course they didn’t originate that idea either; it came first from our Founding Fathers and then from the abolitionist movement. So if believing in this principle makes me an idiot then I’m pretty proud to be one. -

These are all very reasonable points. I normally disagree with a lot of your posts but I agree with you here. -

Well you can. It’s just illegal. I approve of breaking the law if I believe the law to be immoral. That’s pretty rare but it applies to this case IMO. -

Excellent points. They also want critical race theory banned from schools, along with books about gender dysphoria, and of course there is the Florida law banning any discussion of homosexuality. But JD Vance is fine with lecturing other countries about free speech because Germany dares to limit what neo-Nazis might say. -

You are correct and the swastika is not illegal here, and it is used for Indian jewelry and in other ways. It IS however illegal in Germany because of its association to the Nazis. I think that’s reasonable, do you? -

Your argument could be used against all forms of human judgment. Obviously power can always be abused. But at some point someone has to decide something. Oliver Wendell Holmes correctly pointed out that we can’t allow someone to yell “fire” in a crowded theater; therefore there has to be SOME limits on free speech. Who decides those? -

But it also can create fear and violence, particularly in Germany. -
Trump and Russia- the optimism is fading

I’m not opposed or pushing back against that. But we and Europe will have a say as well. -

Lol along with half of all the small businesses in the United States. Go ahead and report us all. You’ll put the entire country out of business. (Actually what will really happen is that whoever you report this to will laugh in your face.) -

There can reasonably be limits to free speech. For example, the swastika is banned in Germany. Given their history, I don’t think this is unreasonable. Incidentally it was the United States, during our occupation of western Germany in 1945, that first banned the swastika, and ever since then the German governments have wisely followed our example. Does someone here want to make an argument why it should not be banned? I’ll listen. -

No, because Trump has already said he wants NATO troops, with the exception of the U.S., to guarantee the peace, and wants European money, with the exception of the U.S., to help rebuild Ukraine. So if he wants these things then Europe gets to have a say. -

States are not required to cooperate with federal policy. If ICE wants to round up non-violent undocumented people in California, they’re not going to get any help from our police or other authorities. And we will resist this effort. It’s called federalism. -

Nothing’s happened yet. Whatever deal Trump tries to make with Putin will have to be agreed to by Ukraine and the surrounding countries. -

They didn’t do the same thing. Sometimes they exceeded their power and the courts slapped them down, but in the end they obeyed the courts. Will Trump?

Free speech caused the holocaust
The Real timschochet replied to HellToupee's topic in The Geek Club
They absolutely bother me. What @HellToupee posted bothers me. But you agree with this neo-Nazi group that wants to evict all 5 million Muslims or kill them? Why is it either I have to agree with your completely awful, completely bigoted solution, or else I’m for rape and murder?! -

You ought to be ashamed of yourself for disagreeing. Have you ever been in the Muslim section of Berlin? I have. Unless you know some of these people you should stfu. So should Vance. -
I think you will be surprised when SCOTUS upholds most of these judges ruling against the Trump administration.

The Real timschochet replied to HellToupee's topic in The Geek Club
What does it mean to “oppose” the Muslim population. And how are the Muslims “destroying” Germany? There are 5.5 million Muslims in Germany, about 6% of the population. Most of them just want to live a quiet life there like the Jews did before World War II. Would you prefer to see another Holocaust? This is why guys like you disgust me. I doubt you’ve ever met a Muslim living in Germany. I have, several, business people from Berlin, originally from Turkey. You know nothing about them but you hate them and you’re sympathetic to bigots. You’re just ignorant.
