The Real timschochet

My initial post on this topic, made in February of 2024, has only proven more correct over time. My only addition is that all those who continue to support President Trump must be labeled useful idiots as well.

I get the problem. But first off I don’t think it’s comparable. Second, and more importantly, any rules or norms that Democrats break at this time are really inconsequential, IMO, compared to the damage that Trump and MAGA are doing to our political system. My premise is that Trump is so awful, and what he is doing is so awful, that it’s almost unpatriotic to criticize Democrats who are the only ones trying to fight him. Are they making mistakes? Sure? Are some of the Dems behaving corruptly or badly? Probably. But it doesn’t matter, we are not in normal times. Once Trump and MAGA have been defeated we can go back to criticizing Democrats. Until then we can’t. Thats my idea of being serious. It outweighs yours.

Not loving it. But I’d be much more concerned if Gavin was trying to silence his opponents. I really don’t see the comparison.

Crickets from the MAGA crowd on this one. And crickets on the totally embarrassing RFK Jr stuff. They’re too busy in the Kimmel thread repeating totally discredited Covid conspiracy theories, stuff about Hunter’s laptop, etc.

This argument is not simply wrong it is dangerous, and if it’s widespread it’s going to costs lives as it did during Covid. There’s more than likely going to be another pandemic. It is more than likely going to be worse than Covid. When it occurs we need to follow the advise and restrictions made by our public health authorities, even the ones made purely out of caution. Otherwise people are going to die. And when this happens conspiratorial misinformation must be suppressed. Sorry but public health is one of the few concerns that in certain cases can supersede free speech.

We don’t like it in principle but 1. Libs have been doing it for years so turnaround is fair. 2. There’s no pattern of bad behavior by Trump. This may have been a bad move but overall he’s not threatening our freedoms. This seems to be the main arguments being made here. And they’re flawed. They’re flawed because government is involved this time, and the only time government was involved when Dems were in charge was for public health reasons which is acceptable. This isn’t. So no libs have not been doing this for years. And it’s flawed because Trump is not making a mistake here. This is part of a larger scheme to destroy his opposition and you guys are refusing to acknowledge this.

They’re like the little boys in Pinocchio who have ditched school and are living on Pleasure Island, not realizing they’re being turned into donkeys until it’s too late.

He really is. High time some of you realized it and stopped dismissing what’s going on.

OK- but you may not be seeing this as part of a bigger picture, which is this: Trump is trying to establish authoritarianism and thus is part of it. Whatever bad things Democrats and Republicans have done before (and they have) what Trump is doing is worse. That’s why he needs to be opposed.

Thank you. Finally. it’s not unprecedented. Liberals have tried it. Conservatives have tried it. It’s wrong every time- IF the government is involved. If the government is not involved I don’t care.
