What total crap. The dudes who committed 9/11 were all illegal immigrants as I recall, coming over our northern border. Were you ready to prosecute Bush after it happened? This concern about terrorism in connection to the border, just like the concern about crime in connection to the border , are nothing more than excuses designed to cover up the fact that the main concern about undocumented immigrants coming from our southern border is that they have brown skin.

Except it absolutely is. Trump wants the states to decide. In Arizona the Republicans appointed the members of their Supreme Court who made the decision. The Republicans then promoted the 1864 law. (Kari Lake said she loved it.) It is Democrats who are trying to overturn it; that’s not a Republican effort. Republicans are only condemning this decision this morning because they see the poll numbers and are suddenly terrified, not out of any moral conviction. Too late. As for Trump, the most terrified guy of all, none of this mess would have even been possible if Roe hadn’t been overturned, and as he loves to tell us, he is the man most responsible for that. Trump did this. Now he gets to own it by hopefully being thrashed in November. More and more that seems very likely.

This is my view as to how it should be. Late term abortions are extremely rare. Nobody gets one for convenience purposes or because they simply changed their mind. It happens when the life of the mother is at risk, or the baby is brain dead due to hydrocephalus or something similar. These decisions are between the pregnant woman and her doctor and the state, IMO, should not interfere.

Truthfully I’m less confident than I pretend. Biden has been handed a gift here but if he and the Democrats can find a way to screw this up rest assured they will.

Attempting to make the argument that both sides are extreme on this subject will not succeed. It might have before Dobbs and all of these state laws and court decisions. Not anymore. Only one side, the conservative side, is extreme and the voters know it.

Yep. Earlier today @Hardcore troubadour made the claim that Donald Trump, who wants the states to decide this, is aligned with majority views on this issue. We’re going to see in November if this is at all accurate. I don’t think it is.

And in the last hour the abortion issue just got way worse for Trump as Arizona’s SC makes all abortion illegal.

I would argue that when a pandemic or other health emergency occurs there is no time for a lengthy public debate. At that point society either follows the lead of the experts or it doesn’t survive. Our response to Covid doesn’t bode well for our ability to deal with future emergencies.

With regard to your question about migrants my answer is yes. At Ellis Island we forced immigrants to take tuberculosis shots. Whats wrong with that principle? Im not for censorship. In the case that RFK called censorship, all the government did was ask Twitter to issue a correction. They did not ask that RFKs statement be removed or banned. If they had I would have a big problem with it. But what they did wasn’t censorship. As to your overall point I agree. I’m extremely reluctant to have the government force anything and I agree that it crosses a dangerous threshold. Even so sometimes it’s necessary.

Because it’s an issue of privacy which is protected in the Constitution. Thats what Roe decided, and it was the correct decision. Dobbs was a bad decision.

So you think the majority believe that each state should decide no matter how restrictive they are?Do you have any polling to back up this assertion?

Do you believe at all in the principle of public health? That it’s the proper role for government to attempt to fight disease in the same way terrorism and crime is fought, with public advice, restrictions, and sometimes when necessary even forcing people to take medication? If you don’t agree with this general principle, as I do, then fine but we really have nothing more to discuss. But if you do agree with it, then it’s proper for government to attempt to correct ignorant statements that harm the overall effort: and yes there are times when that can be more important than free speech.

Trump’s statement on abortion, that it should be left up to the states, is problematic to both sides of this issue. If you believe that abortion is murder then you can’t leave it up to majority rule to decide. If you believe that women have the right to decide about their own body, then you can’t leave it up to majority rule to decide. It’s an attempt to get this issue to go away. For those who know our history, it’s similar to “The Little Giant” Stephen Douglas’s attempt to make slavery go away by embracing Popular Sovereignty.

He’s pissed at Biden for “censoring” him. The form of the censor? After Kennedy suggested on Twitter that Hank Aaron died from the Covid vaccine (absolutely no evidence of this) Biden’s White House contracted Twitter and requested they correct the unfounded accusation. To RFK (and @Jon_mx) that’s censorship.
