    June 27 Presidential debate

I disagree with so much of your post, and so much of it is factually wrong as well. Let’s get right to to the heart of the matter at the center of post: 1. Neither Marxist nor Hamas supporters have taken over any college campuses. Democrats support free speech and peaceful protests. 2. There are no open borders and never have been. There is a crisis currently caused by increased migration which is only going to get worse. The main culprit for this is man-made climate change. No amount of border policing can ever be anything more than a band-aid and will not alleviate this crisis. But even if it could, the current Republican “solutions” are morally unacceptable. Finally, undocumented immigrants are in no way “prioritized” over American citizens. Thats nonsense. 3. DEI is a good idea. Woke is a good thing. There are excesses to each that don’t always work. In general they are a positive. 4. Inflation is mainly a world wide phenomenon and can’t be fought by using more fossil fuels, domestic or otherwise. More importantly it’s ignoring the major source of most of our problems: man made climate change. We are focked if we don’t address this. It may be that a majority of voters currently agree with your sentiments. We’ll find out soon enough. If they do then we will as a nation take a step backwards, but then ultimately reverse ourselves in 2028. Or 2032. It doesn’t matter: I am a long term optimist. I believe that my core principles are right and will win out. But even when they do the one thing I will never write is “Fock off Republicans, you brought this on yourselves”- because I believe that the vast majority of conservatives are well-meaning and, just like liberals, truly want what’s best for this country, and that’s what bothered me most about your post. The true extremists- the radical leftists and extreme MAGA types and Marxists and white supremacists- they can go fock themselves. But they’re not anywhere close to the majority. The rest of us shouldn’t let them win. Yeaterday the tour guide in Amsterdam told me they have 26 political parties in Amsterdam. That’s true democracy and it’s also total chaos. I think our system is better than that and achieves better results.

We can’t defend Taiwan once it’s attacked. The only way to defend Taiwan is to convince China that the consequences of attacking Taiwan would be too costly for them. But once they are attacked we are helpless to prevent it.

    RIP Martin Mull

Anyone remember Fernwood Tonight and America Tonight? Hilarious shows from my youth.

This was one reason I voted for Hillary. Let’s put it this way: in your scenario I trust Biden more than Trump. Better advisors and less inclined to do something impulsive. Or do nothing.

I think Biden should absolutely do an interview with Fox News. Or even a townhall. I would advise that right away. What a great idea.

Both of your points are true. As I wrote well know a lot more in a week.

Why not? When you listen to a conversation between two people you can tell if one of them understands the conversation. Of course it was a softball interview, but the point is that Hisen understood the questions he was asked and replied intelligently. Just as he did last night in the second half of the debate.

So long as you don’t live in a battleground state do whatever you please. But if you live in one of the states that will decide things I strongly urge you to reconsider. Even an incompetent Biden, led by his advisors, is vastly preferable to Donald Trump. It’s not even a close call. And in those states if you don’t for Biden you’re voting for Trump. There’s no way to avoid that choice and responsibility.

That’s not really so though. In the last month Inlistened to the Biden interview with Howard Stern as well as at least one long exchange he had with some supporters. Both times he spoke off the cuff without prepared remarks. Both times he appeared very lucid and sharp. I would note that in the second half of last nights debate he also appeared lucid and sharp at times. So I think you’re wrong, there is plenty of evidence that whatever his deficiencies are he currently is still on top of things enough to be President.

Some early poll numbers: https://www.ipsos.com/en-us/538-ipsos-june-2024-presidential-debate-poll Cheering news for Biden fans: everyone agrees he lost the debate but that doesn’t mean he lost the election. It’s still neck and neck. Trump may not have gained very much. Again this is pretty early sampling. We’ll know much more in a week or so. Frankly I was afraid of a 10 point swing or worse. If that doesn’t happen I can breathe a sigh of relief.

There is still a big disconnect here. First off I now sadly believe that Biden is suffering from sone mental decline. This does not make him, IMO, incompetent to be President. He’s not as sharp as he was before, obviously, But I believe he’s still sharp enough. Second, I still strongly believe that you and other conservatives have been lied to by doctored videos of Biden. Both can be true at rhe same time. Your meme here claims you “knew”; that is false. You didn’t know anything and you still don’t. None of us know whether or not Biden has a bad night last night or whether he’s a doddering most of the time. We can only speculate about this. I believe that Biden has performed pretty well throughout his Presidency. Finally I see no evidence that the MSM has lied to me about this.

It was a stupid, awful lie. I agree it was disgusting. If Biden were running against a honest guy who didn’t engage in his own disgusting lies (at the debate and on a daily basis) it would probably make a big difference to me.

If Trump becomes president...tell us the bad things he will do

2nd night in a row I’m up at 3am. Really sucks. But, you guys asked the question so I will try to answer. There is a big difference between Trump policies I don’t like and Trump policies that I believe will truly hurt all of us. The former is too long to count, so I will concentrate here on the latter. In no particular order. I believe: 1. Trump will cut off aid to Ukraine and negotiate a deal which allows Russia to permanently occupy most of Ukraine. We will agree to guarantee the rump state that remains, but this will be similar to the rump state of Czechoslovakia that England and France guaranteed after Munich in 1938, which was meaningless. Russia will become a territorial threat to all of Western Europe, almost guaranteeing a future war in which we may be forced to put troops on the ground, and which may also ultimately lead to a nuclear war. To make matters worse, I believe that Trump has every intention of pulling the USA out of NATO. Trump will also not lift a finger to defend Taiwan if China decides to invade, or South Korea from North Korea. This is what isolationism is all about. 2. Trump’s attempt to conduct a mass deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants will result in mass protests, rioting (most of these folks aren’t violent but some will become so), an infinite amount of legal challenges. The result will be a total failure- imagine the War Against Drugs multiplied 100 times over. But even the attempt will cost billions of dollars, create a terrible image for the United States, and drive food prices (and all prices) through the roof. 3. in terms of the our economic well being, Trump’s tariffs plan will be the most catastrophic thing he will attempt. However I don’t see him succeeding with this. I figure he’ll talk about it but in the end he will face too much opposition from market forces so I’m less concerned about it. However if it happens we are truly focked. 4. Biden’s actions on climate change, while some environmentalists believe are too limited, are a positive step forward in dealing with what is our most pressing problem. Trump is of the view that this problem does not exist. He is truly convinced that our long term economic woes can be solved by massive oil and coal drilling and reversing all of the environmental actions that Biden has taken. This will effectively destroy our last chance to avoid calamity and destruction in future years which are coming upon us much sooner than we think. There’s a whole lot more but these are my main concerns.

What choice do we have? We sincerely believe that another 4 years of Trump will be a disaster, a calamity. Of course we have to rally around Biden no matter what shape he’s in.

Biden just now: “I might not debate as well as I used to, I may not walk as well as I used to, but I tell the truth.” Very good speech. Hopefully quiets some people down. He’s not quitting so we gotta back him and hope for the best. Let’s go Joe!

Going out to dinner and waiting for my wife and daughters to get ready. Lots of lag time. Trump’s performance, which was dreadful, had no impact on my humility.

That’s not… Strike being pretty dishonest here.
  19. The Real timschochet

Biden lost the debate last night but Trump didn’t win. Trump didn’t mop any floors; he was simply dreadful. Just not quite as bad as Biden.

If it happened I would be very disturbed about it. My impression is that Tapper and Bash were very fair even though I wish they had done more fact checking on Trump’s lies.

I do believe this. The vast majority of those who vote for either Biden or Trump are good people. No doubt in my mind.

This must be it. I haven’t welched on any bet. I offered to pay @Engorgeous George but he declined, for now. If Biden is replaced I will pay him and every one else. At this point I will be happy to lose those bets as I now believe, after last night’s disaster, that unless Biden steps away Trump will probably win the election. But so I WANT to lose those wagers. But I still don’t think it’s going to happen. Do you?
