    Timmy’s thread for general discussion

The coming week should be a pivotal one in terms of the Presidential election. That’s because we will know whether or not the Supreme Court is going to delay the January 6 trial. If they choose not to delay it, it should start in June. Of the Trump legal trials, the January 6 one is really the only one that matters in terms of November. Nobody really cares about the Stormy Daniels case, and the documents case and Georgia are going to both take place well after the election. The January 6 one is the only one that could affect things- maybe- because of Trump is convicted by a jury it could dampen his support among independents. But again it’s all up to the SC and whether or not they will consider Trump’s claim of Presidential immunity.

Again it depends on who you ask. There is a lot of argument on this subject. I have heard law enforcement advocates testify on this before Congress but I’m not finding it right now to link to you. The truth is, while I’m for universal background checks, I’m not 100% convinced that you’re incorrect that it won’t matter. So I’m not going to push this issue. If I had to vote on it I would vote in favor but it’s not a priority to me.

I would also like to see every gun in this country registered, again to fight crime. Just as we register cars. I don’t think this is an infringement of the 2nd Amendment though I’m no attorney and I’m not 100% sure of this- it depends what legal expert you talk to. But in our current political environment I don’t believe that gun registration is an achievable goal. Universal background checks might be.

We don’t have universal background checks for private purchases. That’s what I am for, because law enforcement experts say it will reduce crime in general. But I agree with you that it will have little effect on preventing mass shootings, or gun violence in the inner cities. Still in general I believe it will make us safer so I am in favor.

I have to add that I no longer consider gun control to be a pressing issue in this country. Simply put it’s too late to put the cork back in the bottle. There are too many guns here so any attempt to curtail them will not only fail to achieve the stated goals but also inhibit civil liberties. And I feel the same way, relatively speaking, about undocumented immigration. The two issues are mirror images of each other.

Yes. I’m for universal background checks. I’d like to see some way to prohibit the mentally ill from owning guns but I don’t know how to accomplish that.

Just to clarify I didn’t raise this subject, though I’m certainly interested in discussing it. I haven’t raised any subjects in this thread, I’m responding to what others want to discuss with me.

Can you be more specific about what exactly Mayorkas did or didn’t do and what the order he gave actually said? Then I can better respond to you.

I agree with this analysis. I made this exact point earlier. I am for a few gun control measures but not what Biden is proposing.
  10. The Real timschochet

Sure. It should be illegal for anyone to commit violent crimes. We should have plenty of law enforcement to try and prevent it as much as possible.

    Timmy’s thread for general discussion

I don’t think we should deport all undocumented immigrants because a few of them have committed crimes. I don’t think we should base our overall policy on this idea. I don’t believe that’s reasonable or logical.

I say that I feel terrible for them, but that we shouldn’t demonize millions of people for the acts of a few.

You are smart enough to have understood exactly what my argument is even if you disagree with it. Don’t play stupid.

I mean statistically as compared to those already here. Of course in pure numbers they increase crime.

I do. I’m late already. And hey I’m not wrong.
  16. The Real timschochet

    Timmy’s thread for general discussion

Every study, literally 100% of them, tell us that undocumented immigrants do not increase crime. I don’t think they’re all misleading due to lack of reporting. I don’t think they represent in terms of overall numbers, a crime threat. No matter how terrible individual anecdotes may be.

First off it’s not my argument for sanctuary cities. I made my arguments earlier. Second, I have no idea but it wouldn’t surprise me that most undocumented immigrants would avoid police (some however do serve as informers for police as I stated before.) I’m not understanding your overall point. I believe in sanctuary cities because I don’t believe in mass deportation, and I am generally sympathetic to undocumented immigrants as you are aware. But the way to eliminate sanctuary cities to legally recognize most of these people. If you’re not willing to do that (and I know you’re not) then I don’t know what to tell you. I will never be for mass deportation or local police being instructed to look at people’s papers like some sort of Gestapo so here we are.

Enjoying this but I gotta run. If you have more specific questions for me I will try and respond later on.

This doesn’t apply to me. Their reasons (and I think you mistate them anyhow are not mine.

Do you not see a parallel here between these high profile incidents and mass shootings? In both cases these anecdotes are being used to make sweeping judgments. Everytime there is a mass shooting, Biden calls for a ban on AR-15s, yet we know that the vast majority of these rifles are never used in any crime and are owned by law abiding citizens. Everytime there is a murder or vicious crime committed by an undocumented immigrant, Trump calls for the deportation of all undocumented immigrants, yet we know that that the vast majority of these people commit no crimes. It seems to me that in both cases these are lazy arguments designed to appeal to emotional thinking rather than than logic and reasonableness. Would you agree?

    Timmy’s thread for general discussion

Well my “common sense” isn’t yours. We certainly look at things differently. But I don’t recall ever making the argument that we should make people legal so that they feel safer reporting crime. I DO believe we should make most undocumented people legal, though not citizens, but I have different reasons for it.

That’s a separate issue from sanctuary cities. My answer is that the increased number of migrants is a national crisis. Long term I think it’s beneficial to our country so long as we deal with it in an organized, regulated fashion, which we are not doing. But I also think it creates great burdens especially short- term which are our national responsibility to bear. So yes I believe that New York and other cities that have to deal with the immediate problems head on deserve federal aid.
  23. The Real timschochet

    Timmy’s thread for general discussion

I don’t think we should ever rely on such anecdotal evidence to make sweeping judgments. I won’t ever do it if I can help it.
  24. The Real timschochet

    Timmy’s thread for general discussion

Does the NYC police commissioner propose ending NY as a sanctuary city? If he does I will listen to his argument. But my experience is that the police in sanctuary cities do NOT want to change that status as it would be cost prohibitive and they don’t have the resources, also it would actually lead to an INCREASE in crime since they often use migrants as informers.
  25. The Real timschochet

    Timmy’s thread for general discussion

The increase in numbers is certainly a strain on resources no question. But that is an entirely different issue than whether or not sanctuary city rules lead to an increase in crime, For that you’re going to have to show numbers which contradict the studies. I don’t think you will.
