Restaurant chain shuts down nearly 50 locations in California following minimum wage hike
The Real timschochet replied to Maximum Overkill's topic in The Geek Club
As I mentioned the rent is too high in most of their locations. I’m betting they asked landlords for rent reductions and were refused. The minimum wage increase doesn’t help, but you’re trying to argue it’s the main reason and that’s not necessarily true. California is an expensive place to be. Regulations and government has something to do with that but the main reason is that we’re on the edge of the ocean with sunny weather and no room to build. So property values are high and that in turn makes everything else high. I know you want to treat this as “liberal policies bad, conservative polices good”. But it’s not nearly that simple, ever and certainly not in California. -

FTR it was Bush that bailed out the banks before Obama took office. So I think that defeats your theory. -

Not sure what to tell you. I have good friends in banking as well who are very bullish. I guess it depends on who you talk to. I try to be an optimist but I will never argue with what you’re experiencing around you. -

You do know that they’re under the same health department regulations as other eating establishments, right? https://www.foodprotection.org/members/fpt-archive-articles/2015-09food-safety-risk-of-food-trucks-compared-with-restaurants/#:~:text=These results imply that general, sold in restaurants (41). They’re perfectly safe. This isn’t Tijuana. -

Not saying that this won’t happen or that there couldn’t be a sudden collapse but…my entire life people have been making this same prediction. Eventually the debt will get too large, people are borrowing too much, and the chickens will come home to roost. Meanwhile, in my business (commercial real estate) I get calls nearly every day from prospective investors: do I have property for sale? Do I know property for sale? Do I know any good deals? Etc. Lots of people with lots of money wanting to find a place to put it. And here in California, despite the rules, despite the regulations, despite all the problems there is continual building and building and plans for new building. -

As I wrote earlier their site selection was lazy and they were all too willing to pay enormous rents. Plus, as in your area, they overexpanded. It’s an old story. -

The ACLU will be suing the Biden Administration as they claim that this executive order is illegal. Good for them, I am proud to be a regular contributor. -

It was different. But not for the “cages” reason, for the deliberate family separation reason. 1. What Obama did was awful. 2. What Trump did was far worse. 3. What Biden is doing now is awful but not as bad as what Trump did. 4. What Trump is promising to do if elected again will be catastrophic and horrific. NONE of these are “solutions” to this issue or in any way helpful. We need to rethink this entire matter. -

Rubios quality is not much better than Taco Bell or Del Taco. But those two chains are drive thrus. Rubios is not. If you’re going to have to get out of your car to eat you expect a little higher quality. That’s Rubios main problem. Another issue: in addition to all the taquerias and Mexican restaurants I mentioned in my earlier post there is now an influx of taco trucks. Remember the conservative politician who warned us about “taco trucks on every corner” a few years back? In California it’s happened and it is AWESOME. For me and for most people I talk to the food at these trucks is tastier than most of the chain Mexican restaurants. It’s probably a lot greasier too but what the heck? -

Your bottom line is correct. More “too good” than too lazy. But is there really something wrong with that? Farm labor sucks. Manual labor sucks. Nobody enjoys it. You do what you have to do to feed your family but of course Americans born here think they’re above it. -

1. Good question. This is probably the last straw in a long series of straws. But it’s not the only straw and IMO not the main reason. I believe Rubios would have closed soon anyhow. Writing was on the wall. 2. I do worry about the increase because it’s not smart- it hurts businesses. It’s going to cause a lot of problems. But it’s also not going to destroy most businesses. This is not an “either or” situation. We have a lot of regulations in California. Some of them, like this one, are rather stupid. But we will continue to thrive anyhow mainly because of the location and the weather. 3. Not very nice of you. I’m really a pretty friendly guy. If you’re ever in Orange County I’ll treat you to a beer. -

I agree with you. Poverty leads to crime, as a general rule. But the vast majority of undocumented immigrants come here and are typically able to get work very quickly, mainly because they’re willing to work for wages lower than minimum wage. Not only do they work, they work long hours and are too busy to get involved in violent crime. In addition, they have strong reason to avoid situations that might lead to confrontation with police because they fear deportation. For these two reasons, most undocumented immigrants don’t fall into the “poverty leads to crime” category. Statistics continually bear this out, though all too many people focus on the exceptions who do commit violent crimes. -

Rubios can blame the minimum wage but the truth is they’re a mediocre product who over expanded in an area where there are Mexican restaurants and taco stands on every corner. There are restaurants thriving here everywhere. Also, and this I say with direct, inside knowledge: Rubio’s site selector and director of leasing did very poor jobs choosing locations and signing leases. -

I do t approve of what he’s doing here either. But I don’t think he’s a POS. It’s just a bad decision, IMO. As to whether it’s illegal or not, I don’t know. -
I have no idea if this statement is true. Based on what I’ve read I doubt it. But I am not a doctor so I won’t offer a firm opinion.

I don’t even understand this response. When did I ever bring up government funding? What does that have to do with it? FWIW I’m not in favor of government funding of abortion in most cases. But it’s irrelevant to the topic.

Is there something wrong with calling a Jew hater a POS? I thought it was a given.

Let’s suppose it’s discovered that a baby has hydrocephalus and will be born brain dead. It is further determined that because of the enlarged head, giving birth will put the pregnant woman at risk of ever having further children. Under such circumstances would you be OK with a late term abortion?

This is an improvement on your earlier wish that one of my daughters would be raped by an undocumented immigrant. So I guess I thank you for that. -

Like the tariffs on China, Biden is doing this as a political move, to play into the ugly populist, nativist, xenophobic mood currently overtaking the country. I hate it. It’s so short sided, it’s giving into fear based on ignorance. And it won’t make anything better for us. -

You have to give an address. They check the address against a book. So you need to have the name AND address, and then they cross it off. Fraud is extremely unlikely. -

First off I was referring to 2016 because you brought it up. That WAS an upset, and it doesnt mean the polls were wrong. Polls are a snapshot, the numbers moved. This time around I could see Trump winning easily. I could see a dogfight. I could also see Biden winning easily. All are possible outcomes.
