  1. This is the same David Marcus of Fox News, the MAGA guy who wrote a book about COVID lies? No I don’t believe him. The majority of protestors are not HAMAS supporters, are not anti-Semitic. I’m guessing he was very selective about who he talked to. You guys are being fed bullsh!t and you’re sucking it up.
  2. You should study some history before you spew nonsense: https://www.studentsofhistory.com/ideologies-flip-Democratic-Republican-parties
  3. Nope. Those were the Democrats. In those days Democrats were conservative and Republicans were liberal. Didn’t start changing until FDR and not fully until the 60s. Liberals fight for social change. Conservatives try to hold on to the way things are. In the case of slavery and Jim Crow, the ones fighting against it have always been liberal.

Of course the answer is no. We’ve had 400 years of slavery and racism. You eliminate that overnight and things don’t change. But there would be improvement and I disagree that it would be nominal.

I’m always willing to consider different perspectives. Thank you for yours. That said, we disagree. We might not disagree on solutions, that remains to be seen.

I think perhaps the reason there are no protests (at least so far) is that blacks are exhausted. What do these protests ever get them? Nothing ever changes.

I don’t think the family of George Floyd found this amusing. Sorry that you do.

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

So let me see if I understand correctly: I make a cogent argument (whether or not you agree with me I’ve been pretty clear), the response by @Brahma Bulls is ā€œgo fock yourselfā€ and you blame me and leftists for regarding him as unworthy of discussion. Is that right?

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

I think that black males are restrained for too long. I think when somebody says he can’t breathe there should be a quicker response and there often is not for young black men. This was supposed to be addressed by the George Floyd Act which conservatives killed, as I pointed out in the OP. It’s an issue of vital concern so no I don’t think I posted too quickly.

No they focused on police encounters. Shootings were only one example.

    How? Can you demonstrate?

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

I think your point is a good one, I agree with you and I probably treat people the same as you do. But neither of us is a police officer. Because they almost uniquely in our society have the legal ability to use deadly force, their responsibility is that much greater.

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

It’s been pointed out in this thread, correctly, that other racial groups that suffer from income disparity do not commit crime at the same level that black people do. Poor people are still far more likely than others to commit crimes, but blacks commit crimes at a much higher rate even than other poor people. Therefore I conclude that with blacks it’s a combination of three issues: 1. income disparity 2. A long history of mistreatment against them, particularly slavery and Jim Crow, which has created social dysfunction, lack of family structure, etc. 3. Police and societal mistreatment and racism against black people which continues in this current day. Keep in mind that the vast majority of African-Americans are law abiding and do not commit violent crimes or any crimes, and yet are still often victims of point #3. And THAT is why I am forced to view these issues with a lens of racism.

I have no problem agreeing with Fryer. I have never mentioned police shootings in this thread. All of my posts have been about overall treatment. The story in the OP is about a victim who died because he couldn’t breathe, not because he was shot. And deaths at the hands of police are very rare. It’s the overall treatment that I call into question. And contrary to what you wrote, I very much like it when science contradicts my beliefs. I’m just not convinced it has done so with regards to transgenders, which I think must be what you’re referring to.

Just to clarify for anyone else reading this- I wasn’t asking anyone to shut you up or censor you. By all means post your hatred for all to read. I was asking others to call you out when you make bigoted remarks like calling my post ā€œJewyā€. ETA in November I will enjoy collecting your $25 from @edjr. I will donate it to the ADL. That will be a good day.

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

OK I know what your point is. It’s the same point conservatives always make when racism is argued: some of these incidents were justified therefore there is no pattern. It would take me a lot of time to rebut that point properly. And then we might still disagree. I’m happy to do that but it’s a beautiful day here and I’m headed to the beach. So if you’re patient with me I will attempt to address this later on. Enjoy your day.

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

No and it’s completely irrelevant. Bad guys, both black and white, kill police. That’s a given. Evil people do evil things. Police are not evil and we should hold them to a completely different standard.

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

I want to add to my previous post that there ARE racists who post in this forum, @Cdub100 being an obvious example (he is also an acknowledged anti-Semite, very open about it.) The fact that so many around here, who are not bigots, allow a guy like this to continually make bigoted comments without any pushback doesn’t speak well to your own credibility, IMO. It’s a microcosm of your tolerance towards Trump’s continual and explicit racism.

No I posted those links in exasperation, responding to @EternalShinyAndChrome who actually argues, in this year of 2024, that there is no racism going on from police. I am frustrated because I don’t believe @EternalShinyAndChrome is a racist. I don’t believe most of you are racist. If you were it would be easier because then I would simply point it out and that would be the end of discussion. But I think most of you are well meaning people who are totally wrong on this subject and very stubborn about it, and resentful of minorities complaining about racism, and this is much of the impetus of support for Donald Trump. And so that’s extremely frustrating to me.

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

Would you prefer ā€œsystemicā€? I certainly didn’t create these terms and I think they’re pretty accurate.
  21. The Real timschochet

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

It is racism. But I also get your point. I understand what might cause cops to have racist attitudes. That’s why we need police reform. What we don’t need is Presidential candidate endorsing bad attitudes and behavior and calling it ā€œsupporting the blueā€.

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

Nonsense. I revere the Constitution. And I have no idea what any of this has to do with the points I’ve been making in this thread, which, agree or not, are fairly simple to understand.

ā€œI Can’t Breatheā€ Yet another black man dies at the hands of police

Of course it’s a tremendous issue. When have I not acknowledged that? It’s a terrible issue, it’s caused by poverty and by the problems with black culture stemming back to Jim Crow and before that, slavery. The whole point of Critical Race Theory and the 1619 Project is to acknowledge how our terrible history has led to this problem. Once we do that we can work on trying to fix it. My real agenda is to achieve, in the words of the Constitution, a more perfect Union.
