Trump’s overall comments were, as usual, stupid, displaying no knowledge of history or relevance. That being said- there are VERY few things I admire about Donald Trump but one of those is he seems to have an aversion to Americans dying in war. He’s actually very close to being a pacifist. Thats not necessarily good for our foreign policy (there are times when we do have to take a stand) but as a general rule it IS admirable.

He’s expressed annoyance before about Lincoln being considered a greater President than him. This is part of that I think.

California’s GDP: 3.5 trillion. Texas and Florida combined GDP: 3.4 trillion. Not sure what you’re trying to prove with your statistics. We have more poor people? We also have more rich people. So what? I don’t think I have an ideology. I’m liberal in some areas, conservative in others. I try not to insult others. Is that an ideology? -

I haven’t seen this performance so I can’t comment specifically, but in general I disagree with your take. I believe that there are limits beyond which society should properly shun, and that includes comedy. The highest rated comedy radio show of the 1930s, for example, was Amos and Andy, in which two white dudes pretended to be black and ridiculed black culture in an extremely racist manner. Such a program would not be aired today and rightfully so. -
Do you believe that Donald Trump’s behavior on January 6, 2020 should not be a source for criticism?

California’s population decline comes after nearly a century of unparalleled growth. I wouldn’t read too much into it. We’re by far the most populated state in the Union and it’s really not that close. I don’t understand why you enjoy using words like “retard”. Do you think that you’re somehow striking back against woke? It just makes you look like a really dumb bad person. Which you’re probably not, though many if not most of your political opinions are based on a lot of nonsense, including the whole point of this thread. Conservative parents, unfortunately, tend to be intolerant of gays and trans people, and that creates mental illness and often leads to teen suicides. -

Your second point is correct and it’s an important one to remember and keep emphasizing. But as to your first point: most liberals, and many independents truly believe that Donald Trump represents an existential threat to our constitutional republic. Personally that is my firm conviction. I have never felt this way about an American politician in my lifetime and sincerely hope never to do so again. You’re free to disagree with this analysis about Trump but please don’t dismiss it as disingenuous: it’s not. We truly feel this way and think we have ample reason to do so. -

I also have to go with London Calling. -
I know you mean this sarcastically but it’s very largely a true statement. It’s pretty clear that NATO’s firm support of Ukraine would have been impossible if not for the leadership of Joe Biden. I believe in fact that if Trump had won the 2020 election, Russian troops would be in Kiev as we speak, and Chinese troops might very well in Taipei.
-
He acknowledged a transfer of power after being forced to do so. If you can’t see the difference between this and Hillary calling Trump on election night and congratulating him then we’re at an impasse. I have nothing further to add.

Link?

Also let’s not have this constant revisionism about Russia. Robert Muller was appointed, not because of anything Hilary did or said or funded, but because Trump abruptly fired James Comey, lied initially about his reason for doing so, and this led to Trump’s attorney general appointing an independent prosecutor to investigate. Muller did not find direct evidence of collusion between Trump and Russia (which didn’t mean it didn’t exist) but DID find multiple instances of Trump committing obstruction of justice for which he should have been impeached, removed from office, and prosecuted for. So I don’t think any reasonable person would ever refer to this as a “hoax”.
-
I’m not asking you to forget anything. If you want to criticize Hillary for her statements or actions go right ahead. But she did concede and it makes all the difference.
-
We’ve had plenty of Democrats who have whined that they were cheated. Not only Hillary, but Al Gore. In 2004 John Kerry complained about Ohio. And in Georgia Stacey Abrams was a huge whiner and even threatened a lawsuit before she finally conceded. But Abrams finally DID concede. And that’s what separates Trump, and makes him uniquely awful. He has helped to tear this nation apart because of his inability to admit he lost.
-
These folks who bring up Hillary somehow always forget that she called up Trump, conceded the election and congratulated him ON ELECTION NIGHT 2016! Which is what classy people do even if they don’t like the results. If Trump had conceded the election in 2020 once the results were in I honestly wouldn’t have cared what he said later on.

Outside of the.Capitol Building Or in the park where Trump spoke. Or really anywhere in DC. Again to the best of my knowledge nobody wrote beforehand “I think a mob might attack the Capitol building.”
-
A lot of people worried that there would be trouble. I don’t remember the Capitol building being singled out.
-
I really wonder about these polls which suggest that a strong majority of Republicans believe the election was stolen. Here’s the thing: I know a LOT of Republicans, including many Trump supporters. I’ve asked this question and never met anyone who thought the election was stolen. Even in this forum, mostly filled with conservatives, only a small handful of you ever assert the election was stolen and in most instances I suspect trolling. So why do the polls show these numbers? One possibility is that my impressions above are all anecdotal and that the folks I know and encounter directly aren’t representative of the real numbers. That’s always something to consider. My suspicion however is that the opinion that the election was stolen is not honestly felt, but rather an expression of defiance in the way that all support for Trump is an expression of defiance: once again Republicans are effectively saying we believe this because f the liberals.
-
There is certainly a lot of dispute over the facts regarding your first sentence. With regard to the rest my understanding was that the “intel” was more general and not specific to the Capitol Building. But again someone may have a link that contradicts this.
-
I could be wrong but I don’t remember any conversation at FBG, or the news media, or anywhere else that the Capitol Building was in danger of being attacked on Jan 6. Do you have a link that proves otherwise?
-
My assumption is that the Capitol Police were surprised; they were not expecting a riot and unlike police in certain cities had no real training about how to react when there is a riot. My further assumption is therefore that as happens in a crisis situation, some police acted bravely and thoughtfully, some acted foolishly, some were frozen not knowing what to do, and a few may have behaved badly. As a retired police officer, do you regard these as reasonable assumptions?
-
Earlier in response to my post you wrote that the Jan 6 people who entered the Capitol had “every right to be there”. Just to clarify: Ashli Babbit and the others had the right to climb through windows at the Capitol? And you believe that the Capitol Police shouldn’t have tried to stop them?
-
It’s terribly sad to me that Ashli Babbitt died. She shouldn’t have been there. None of them should have. These folks were there because they were lied to by Donald Trump. He told them the election of 2020 was stolen. Millions of Republicans still believe this. Shame on anyone who lied to them especially Trump.
