California to provide all illegal aliens with healthcare coverage January 1st

I could refute each of these points but it’s not worth it with you. Your entire argument is based on bigotry and ignorance and I don’t see that changing. -
Maine’s top election official removes Trump from 2024 primary ballot
The Real timschochet replied to Mike Honcho's topic in The Geek Club
No it’s more general. Georgia had record turnout due mainly to black anger and the extraordinary efforts of Stacey Abrams who is a much better organizer than politician. She should be Biden’s campaign manager; he would be performing much better. -

No, it just explains it more clearly and with more detail than I can. In poor and rural communities where lots of minorities live (particularly in the South) many don’t have IDs. Forcing them to get them and then making them wait to produce them are burdens that are designed to depress minority voting. Which indeed is the purpose. There is no significant voter fraud, that’s a myth: Thos whole issue, like so much of the MAGA movement, is all about certain white people uncomfortable with the growing racial diversification of America. Thats why you guys want to depress black voting, and put a wall on our border, and deport millions of darker skinned people, and shut down immigration from certain countries: it’s all part of the same pattern. -
Fall of Giants is really good too. But World Without End rivals Pillars for me. Have you tried A Dangerous Fortune? About a bank in the 19th century. That’s my favorite of all his novels.

Yes the law backfired in Georgia because it pissed off black voters. I fear that was a short term result but we’ll see. The law was designed to curtail minority voting in a formerly red state that was becoming purple. Thats why I complained about it and I was correct to do so. Once again you’re totally wrong. It’s really embarrassing that you’re wrong so often and yet spend so much time calling out others. -

They pay for themselves. They have always been, and remain, a net financial benefit. What I don’t want to pay for is a border wall or mass deportation. Any money spent on those ideas should come directly from the MAGA folks who want them. -
No one is talking about excoriating him. I have no problem with him living his life and seeing him get 2nd or 3rd chances. Redemption is a great thing and I believe in it. But I also don’t think he should be honored.

The problem with “sucking it up and riding it out” is that then they become public health risks. Which is exactly what we don’t want as a society. So many people are ignoring common sense on this issue. What we really need is give most of these folks a path to citizenship so that they can contribute more to our society. And we have to reform the damn immigration system. If we’re not willing to do that this situation is only going to get worse. The conservative “solutions” to this issue are not only unworkable they’re incredibly cruel and inhumane. Why can’t you guys work with us to solve this focking problem already? -

My main complaint about voter ID laws is that they have been deliberately enacted in heavily minority areas. The real intent, I believe, is not to secure legal voting (which is very secure already) but to discourage heavy minority voting in order to help Republicans win. -

1. Sure. Maine has 4 electoral votes. So for Maine’s electoral split to matter nationwide, the electoral count difference would have to be two electoral votes or less. That occurred exactly once in our history, in 1876. Given the amount of states which are currently firmly in the red and blue column, it’s almost statistically impossible that this will occur again. 2. That’s a separate issue and I happen to agree with you to a point- see below. But my argument is not that this wouldn’t be unfair, only that it’s extremely unlikely that it would change the ultimate outcome. 3. It’s wrong, IMO, to remove Trump from the ballot because he hasn’t been charged with insurrection, much less found guilty, and that’s what the 14th Amendment requires. But those who argue that it’s undemocratic and would disenfranchise voters are missing the point. We have restrictions in place already: nobody can run for a third term, you have to be over 35, you have to be a natural born citizen, etc. All of these restrictions are undemocratic and yet we have them. The 14th Amendment clause in question is just another restriction and it’s a good one I believe to have. It’s just inapplicable in this instance. -

I know this pisses a lot of you off, but economically it makes sense. Right now when undocumented immigrants get sick they go to the ER which ends up costing the taxpayer even more. Also consider tuberculosis: it costs $25 or so to inoculate, but once somebody gets it the cost runs into thousands of dollars. So for public health reasons we need to encourage these folks to get basic healthcare. I can predict what the response will be: “well they shouldn’t be here in the first place.” But they are here. And despite what Trump is proposing there is never going to be any kind of mass deportation. It’s never going to happen. Nor are they ever going to self deport. So our choices, as a society, are limited. If we don’t give them adequate housing, as Chicago is doing, and health services, as California is doing, then the ultimate cost will be even higher for us. -
Not a good look. Are the Bills going to honor OJ next?

I honestly believe that even before Covid, Trump’s tariffs were going to lead to long term economic problems. Biden doesn’t get any credit in this regard either, since for the most part he has failed to lift the tariffs.
-
Sure. But isn’t that a good thing? I can’t think of any reasonable person who would want Biden to lose, given the alternative.

Maine’s top election official removes Trump from 2024 primary ballot
The Real timschochet replied to Mike Honcho's topic in The Geek Club
His specific reason (that Maine isn’t winner take all) is also irrelevant, because the difference isn’t going to be less than 5 electoral votes. -
The main problems are mortgage rates and the inflation that people can see in their daily lives- so long as these remain high, all of the talk about the good economy won’t help Biden. But I think both will improve by the summer.

Stop with the “people like you are OK with this”. I’m not OK with this, and I’ve posted that several times now. All I’m saying is that I doubt it would affect the outcome.
