I would argue that when a pandemic or other health emergency occurs there is no time for a lengthy public debate. At that point society either follows the lead of the experts or it doesn’t survive. Our response to Covid doesn’t bode well for our ability to deal with future emergencies.

I’m extremely reluctant to have the government force anything and I agree that it crosses a dangerous threshold. Even so sometimes it’s necessary.

Do you believe at all in the principle of public health? That it’s the proper role for government to attempt to fight disease in the same way terrorism and crime is fought, with public advice, restrictions, and sometimes when necessary even forcing people to take medication? If you don’t agree with this general principle, as I do, then fine but we really have nothing more to discuss. But if you do agree with it, then it’s proper for government to attempt to correct ignorant statements that harm the overall effort: and yes there are times when that can be more important than free speech.

Trump’s statement on abortion, that it should be left up to the states, is problematic to both sides of this issue. If you believe that abortion is murder then you can’t leave it up to majority rule to decide. If you believe that women have the right to decide about their own body, then you can’t leave it up to majority rule to decide. It’s an attempt to get this issue to go away. For those who know our history, it’s similar to “The Little Giant” Stephen Douglas’s attempt to make slavery go away by embracing Popular Sovereignty.

In a parliamentary system like Israel and England you have elections whenever the public pressure gets too much. I prefer our Republican form of government.

It’s a mash up of leftist politicians saying they want to defund with members of the actual leadership (Pelosi, Harris) calling for the reallocation of certain duties of police, which is actually quite reasonable. But of course it’s all merged together to give one the impression that Democrats are united in getting rid of police. I want to respond to this point because you’ve made it several times on a variety of issues. Let’s be clear: the number of people who agree with you about any given topic neither adds nor takes away from your correctness on that topic. For myself, I tend to become distrustful of my views if I find that a majority agree with them.

And of course this is untrue. To cite only 2 of many examples, the Civil War and World War II were both highly noble efforts are not lies at all, whatever that means. In both cases we did much for human freedom.

I don’t declare him guilty. I think he is, in most cases. But if juries find him not guilty then of course I’ll accept the result. But we have to have jury trials first and Trump is doing everything he can to avoid that. Which should tell you something. By stating “all of these trials are politically motivated” you’re expressing a bias far stronger than mine.
