Another fast food place closes in CA same day as minimum wage goes to $20

I’m not calling them liars. But they are self serving and in these situations they always blame outside conditions. Do you really think Mod Pizza is ever going to say “we screwed up and opened too many locations in the inland empire and a few locations that weren’t visible enough.”? Incidentally, Mod Pizza is one of those places where the customer makes his own pizza. Theres about 4 of these, all very similar, competing with each other. They’ve overdone the market IMO. We have so much pizza in California it’s coming out of our ears. You can get sushi pizza now. Yesterday I saw a new place offering Chicken Tandoori Pizza. Not kidding. Only ice cream is more available, -

You can’t offer anecdotes of restaurants closing down and blame it on this law and then claim that it’s too soon to know how the law will affect people. Thats a contradiction. If I accept your premise that it’s too soon to see the effects (and it’s a reasonable point) then we should also disregard your anecdotes, right? -

I think it’s its fantasyland to believe he’s done a terrible job. Inflation has risen all across the world but our increases are lower than most other countries. We have rebounded better. Most of that is due to our outstanding economy but some is due to Biden’s policies. -

My post was about retail leasing. Not commercial sales. Obviously Covid has destroyed office building leasing and sales and that is very problematic both in California and elsewhere. I don’t think it’s coming back. Industrial property has also taken a huge hit. But none of this has anything to do with the topic at hand. -

I do agree with the general premise of this thread: minimum wage increases are a tax on the consumer that hurts many small businesses. As an economic principle that is absolutely true. It just doesn’t apply to California in the way you guys are assuming because other factors are at play. But my question for those of you who, correctly, are concerned about government taxation and regulations- how could you possibly ever vote for Donald Trump??? For all Joe Biden and the Democrats have done with regard to these issues, Trump will be far worse by any objective measure. Let’s start with the 10% tariff on all imported goods he is proposing. Dont you guys realize what a huge tax that will be, how damaging it will be to the economy? I just don’t understand how people who claim to like capitalist solutions can support this guy. -

Im telling you that price is only one reason that undocumented immigrants are hired. Another reason, just as important, is that the businesses are owned by people from the same country who desire to help family and friends. As far as this being a problem no not really. First we don’t have an employment problem in this country. In fact we need more labor. Eventually that might change due to robotics but when it does the marketplace will provide the solutions. Most importantly the use of undocumented labor in a variety of industries is key to controlling inflation. Simply put if we ever actually do what Trump and Republicans are proposing (mass round up and deportation, strict enforcement of hiring laws) our prices will skyrocket. -

@RLLD the thing is we’re not seeing a lot of restaurants closing their doors. It’s the exact opposite: in the busy areas (LA, Orange County, San Francisco, San Diego) it remains very hard to find good retail space. When something closes down it gets immediately replaced because the demand is great. Now in other parts of California: the Inland Empire, Riverside, Bakersfield, Fresno, etc-this is not the case. There is lots of vacancy because developers overbuilt. But that’s a 30 year old problem and has little to do with new regulations. -

You’re showing some ignorance here. I don’t break the law but if I did, the IRS is not the agency that would be investigating my employment practices. HTH. -

It’s possible. The numbers have exploded- not, I believe, due to anything Biden did or didn’t do, but because of the economic dislocation caused by Covid. So I will concede that it’s possible at least in the short term. Long term I don’t think so and the studies back me up. But let’s also discuss my second contention: Trump’s main argument against illegal immigration is not the economic consequences but that, according to him, they are bad people who commit violent crime. They “are poisoning the blood of America”- I think that’s a direct quote. I offered an article from this year about illegal immigration and crime and it presents facts and statistics that completely refute Trump’s position. -

Whats your point? If they were a benefit then they’re even more of one now. If they weren’t violent criminals then they aren’t now either. All of the same facts remain true. -

Of course. I figure there are about 15 million now. But they’re even more a net benefit than they were before. -

You must be a pretty fast reader. I guess you overlooked the list of monetary contributions by state? Here’s more: The economic benefits of illegal immigration outweigh the costs: https://phys.org/news/2020-05-economic-benefits-illegal-immigration-outweigh.amp The truth about illegal immigration and crime: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/02/29/truth-about-illegal-immigration-crime/ Note: before somebody comments, I have no problem with the phrase “illegal immigration” because that’s what it is. I DO have a problem with calling people illegals. -

Well here’s the thing. When I make these claims (that undocumented immigrants are a net economic benefit, that they commit less violent crime by percentage than native born citizens), I always back them up with studies and statistical data. All of you guys that disagree with me, you have a bunch of really ugly anecdotes. No evidence, no data. Just a lot of scapegoating. You also have, unfortunately, a plurality of Americans who probably agree with you on a lot of this. But all of the evidence out there suggests that I’m right and you’re wrong. -

As I wrote, they’re a net benefit. Nearly 100% of what you’ve been told about undocumented immigrants, what conservatives believe, is rooted in lies, fear and bigotry. They are NOT an economic burden. They do NOT commit violent crime at a larger rate that people born here. They are NOT here to replace us, or to vote Democrat. This doesn’t need to be the #1 issue for people. Ridiculous that it is. -

https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2016/oct/02/maria-teresa-kumar/how-much-do-undocumented-immigrants-pay-taxes/ As of 2016 it was 12 billion a year. It’s gone way up since then. Oh and they’re not illegal. They’re undocumented. There’s no such thing as an illegal person. -

They have to pay a pretty large sales tax to the state of California. And all kinds of other taxes and fees to keep their doors open. They pay plenty. They also keep prices low. Their contributions are a huge net positive, they don’t cost you a cent. -
