  1. The shutdown benefited the Democrats. Ending the shutdown benefited the Democrats. The Democratic base getting royally pissed off and blaming moderate Dems for caving also benefits the Democrats. The goal of the Democrats above all else is to gain control of the House in 2027, possibly the Senate as well, and the Presidency in 2029. This shutdown helped them do that by making Republicans go on record regarding healthcare and affordability, which will be the two decisive issues coming up.

I’m willing to question the media now.

All right. A whole lot you here on the right have been telling liberals like myself that the mainstream media is full of sh!t for years, deliberately lying to me and everyone. I’ve never bought into it. Call me obtuse, naive, a moron, whatever. I’m not sure I’m buying into it even now (still skeptical about the “deliberate” part.) But yeah they really blew it. Again. And I’m open to the discussion. Gonna be a long time before I trust the news again.

You libs are gonna be pissed

We don’t care about trans competing in women’s sports. But we certainly do care about your ignorance and bigotry and letting these folks live their lives with some dignity. Hopefully any decent person would care about those things.

You libs are gonna be pissed

It’s completely a fringe issue. If you turn on the MSNBC opinion shows, or progressive talk radio, or any liberal or progressive website, it’s a topic that is NEVER discussed. It’s only on conservative sites than anybody cares at all about this. And while the trans issue in general was big for Republicans last year that’s already over. The GOP candidate in Virginia tried to make it a big issue and she got absolutely nowhere. People care about affordability and the crap that ICE is pulling. They don’t care about this anymore.

    Election Night 2025

So here’s what I think is going to happen Tuesday night. (Keep in mind that my political predictions are right about 80% of the time. My sports predictions not so much.) 1. Prop. 50 in California, which will give the state about 5 more Democratic leaning Congressional districts, will win easily, perhaps over 60%. 2. The Democratic nominee for governor in Virginia will win easily. She will carry the Democratic candidate for attorney general over the top though that will be closer. 3. The Democratic nominee for governor in New Jersey will win by an easier margin than is currently projected- perhaps 5-8%. Just as important in terms of long term projections, a significant number of Latino voters in New Jersey who abandoned the Democratic Party in 2024 for Donald Trump will return to the fold. 4. Mamdani will win by the largest margin of all. 70% or higher is possible. In other words, Democratic victories everywhere. This is not however any kind of sign that the Democratic Party is healthy or popular- it’s not. The public by and large can’t stand the Democratic Party and truthfully they have good reasons. That’s not going away. But Tuesday night, and I believe a year from now as well, Democrats are going to win big because the public is rejecting Donald Trump.

    US Federal Government Shutdown Thread

In any discussion of health care in this country there are are 2 points that have to be accepted by all: 1. Americans want affordable health insurance, not affordable health care. They don’t care about affordable health care or the cost of health care, high or low: they only want to pay a fixed affordable monthly sum that pays for most or all of their health care when necessary. 2. Americans want everyone with pre-existing conditions to pay the exact same monthly payment as everybody else and be given the exact same care as everybody else. Unless your solution meets these two points then your solution is meaningless. I suspect that is the case with @Strike but he’s free to correct me if I am wrong.

How do you lower the cost of healthcare and at the same time don’t allow insurance companies to charge more for pre-existing conditions? If you have convered this specific question in your previous posts I am unaware of it.

    SNAP

If this were actually the case Trump would announce that he is going to fight the decision in court for the purpose you stated, but that in the meantime he’s going to pay the SNAP benefits in full because he expects the shutdown to end later this week so it’s all a moot point anyhow. But he’s not doing that.,He’s not paying and over the weekend he threatened states that paid out any monies already with punishment if they continued to do so. That has nothing to do with the legal battle. Which is why you’re wrong. Trump is withholding these funds because he (a) mistakenly believes they mostly go to Democrats (he said this just the other day) and (b) he wants to punish Democrats and cause them pain. A big part of the reason that Trump continues to get away with this kind of crap is that people like you constantly attempt to offer rational excuses after the fact.

I was opposed to ACA because the minute that they forced insurance companies to accept pre-existing conditions and not charge more I knew that it would eventually become unworkable. So it has. The only way to keep it functioning is to throw more money at it, all the time, which is what we’re doing. We will never go back to allowing insurance to charge more for pre-existing conditions. The public won’t stand for it. And we’re not, in the foreseeable future, going to move to single payer because Republicans will not agree. So we’re stuck with throwing our money at ACA.

    SNAP

Even with the shutdown soon to be over (should be Wednesday officially) Trump is comtinuing to resist paying out SNAP. He now is asking the Supreme Court to overturn the appeals court decision from this morning.
  15. The booing yesterday at the Commanders game was, IMO, pretty shameful. I wasn’t aware of it until this morning (I was really busy yesterday and followed the shutdown news but nothing much else.) I can’t stand Donald Trump and normally I enjoy seeing him booed. But not when he is swearing in military recruits. Have some class, respect the office even if he doesn’t, people. Come on.

I like the Trojans this year. I thought they could have beaten Notre Dame but blew it. Of course I’m hoping the Bruins can be competitive with them in a couple of weeks, maybe get an upset. Not holding my breath as USC is clearly a much better team.

Tim’s thread about anything but politics

Speaking of UCLA, kind of big news for them: they’re moving to So Fi where I was last night: https://247sports.com/college/ucla/article/ucla-football-move-from-rose-bowl-sofi-stadium-260786872/ This makes a lot of sense. The Rose Bowl is old and antiquated, So Fi is brand new. The Rose Bowl is a long drive from the campus, has way too many seats which always makes Bruin games feel half empty. Plus it was never the traditional home of UCLA football; they only started playing there in the 80s. Before that they shared the Colisseum with USC, another really old venue and also right next to USC. So hopefully this news will bring some energy to this program, help with recruiting, etc. I might be interested in season tickets depending on the price. It’s a much easier drive for me.

OK. I just explained why a vote on the ACA extension is so significant. But go ahead and ignore facts and reason like you usually do. That’s your prerogative and your pattern.

No I was busy watching the Steelers get thrashed. But it only helps the Democrats for the majority of them to be opposed to ending the shutdown. If you don’t understand that then you don’t understand politics. Did you make up the story about AOC? Or did someone else online make it up and you simply decided to post it without a link?

Lol you were wrong again. The Democrats didn’t cave. 8 Democrats chose, against the wishes of the rest, to reach a compromise. The public understands that the Dems have very few options here, with Republicans in control of everything. Now there’s going to be a vote on extending the increased ACA subsidies for another year next month, which forces Republicans to do what they have tried so hard to avoid: actually having to vote on this issue. If they agree to extend the benefits, which the overwhelming majority of Americans want (including a sizable number of MAGA supporters) that’s a huge victory for the Democrats and absolutely justifies the shutdown, if the bill fails, or is stalled out in the House, or Trump ends up vetoing, that will help to ensure the almost already guaranteed blue wave next November- though this latter result will hurt millions of Americans if it happens, it won’t hurt Democrats politically. Either way, in terms of politics, Democrats emerge the winners from last night.
