The practice of excluding people based on religion, ethnicity, or place of origin alone, irrespective of any other factors, is bigoted, morally wrong, and will make us less safe. I don’t have a problem with extensive vetting, long wait periods, and treating people with more caution based on where they’re from. But exclusion is unacceptable.

I brought up Reiner’s politics early on in this thread and I thought it was justified because he was heavily involved in politics- and IMO played an important and positive role especially, as I wrote, on gay marriage. I didn’t bring up Trump; that didn’t seem relevant to me as this wasn’t a political crime. Trump brought up Trump, and his comments were terrible, and that’s why we’re now talking about Trump.

President Trump’s post this morning, blaming Rob Reiner’s murder on Trump Derangement Syndrome, shows that, even beyond his disastrous policies, he is a truly reprehensible human being. IMO.

If it indeed was the son (and it looks like it now) then what’s really worthy here would be a discussion about the horrors of addiction, and what if anything society should be doing differently.

His politics were important. This is a man who made a positive difference to our society, particularly, as I mentioned, on the issue of gay rights. He should be remembered and revered for that aspect of his life as well as his cinematic accomplishments.

Los Angeles Times now reporting that the son, Nick, has been arrested on suspicion of homicide.

Since you have expressed your support for Trump on this issue, and your desire to see this family and thousands of others sent back to Afghanistan where they will most likely be imprisoned or executed, I have no desire to answer any further of your questions.

Your report earlier of false news wasn’t problematic in itself. What was problematic, IMO, was your willingness and eagerness to accept any alternative to the fact that this guy is a Muslim, which continues in this post in which you suggest that he might have converted to Christianity at some point. This goes back to earlier discussions we have had in which you refuse to acknowledge that Muslims can be moral people, willing to do the right thing. But of course the facts continue to contradict your sentiments on this issue. There are over 1 billion Muslims on this planet. Those that engage in violent terrorism comprise a tiny handful, almost statistically insignificant. Yet to you and to the author of this thread (and, for that matter to the President of the United States and so many of his supporters) that tiny handful are representative of Islam as a whole. This sort of believe is collectivization at its worst and ugliest.

Then long interviews. Maybe with a psychiatrist.i don’t care. I’m not willing to restrict anyone based solely on ethnicity, religion, or point of origin. That’s unacceptable to me. I will fight against any politician or political movement that proposes this.

For those of us who support gay rights, particularly gay marriage, it’s important to note how vital Rob Reiner was to this issue. He pretty much led the charge at a time when most liberal political leaders, including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, refused to come out in favor for fear of alienating religious conservatives. Today gay marriage is such a given, so popular that it’s hard to remember that only a short time ago this was not the case. Reiner was not merely vocal; he organized the movement with his own time and money. He selected and paid for the attorneys who argued Obergefell before the Supreme Court.

We don’t know that the son is the killer. There are strong rumors to that affect but that’s all they are at this moment.

The story is true, all of it, including the extreme vetting, though that’s my interpretation based on the length of time and the family’s description of the long interviews and paperwork required. I really don’t care whether you believe me or not. I don’t think you have credibility to question my integrity or anyone else’s. The bigger issue, FOR YOU, is whether or not you support what Trump is doing with regard to the thousands of Afghan refugees in this country. I added “for you” because it’s not a big issue for me or anyone else reading this; again, you lack the credibility or integrity for that to be the case. But it’s a big issue for you, or should be, if you want to decide what kind of person you ultimately want to be.

I hope you change your mind. I find many of your views to be unfortunate- even in this latest post you blindly attack liberals and accuse them of “murderous and shylock ways”- really an awful thing to write much less believe- but on the other hand I always appreciated your willingness to engage in civil discussion and your determination, in most instances, to refrain from personal insults as the first line of rebuttal, which sadly is is a rarity around here. You will be missed.

A year and 11 months seems pretty extreme to me. Call it what you want. If you think what Trump is doing is defensible then there’s really nothing further to add.

No it isn’t. It’s a hateful story about fear and bigotry and it makes me sick.

I don’t know the details. I know they were in Pakistan for nearly two years while the State Department reviewed their case.
