Stock Market bubble - will burst - it did, and recovered twice. ***Official thread***

So .25 and promises to lower twice more by end of year. It works for me personally (been looking to refi an investment) but it’s gonna raise inflation even more. -

Because it doesn’t hurt Hank Reardon to feed starving children in Philadelphia, even if we have to tax Reardon Metal to pay for it. It actually helps Reardon Metal because it leads to a more stable, safer society. -

This is not meant to be a response to you (you’re never worth responding to) but for anyone else who might be reading this and think you have a point: when the Republican Party endorses attacks on free trade and blatant interference in the marketplace, the labeling of liberals as “socialist” is rather meaningless. -

No you simply attempted to argue that we cannot protect the most unfortunate among us without limiting the achievements of the most able. You failed to explain why this is so. I don’t understand. I’ve never understood even when Ayn Rand attempted to make the same argument all those years ago in Atlas Shrugged. I love that novel but the argument is a flawed one. -

Are you suggesting that the President and political party you support is opposed to interfering in the marketplace? -

I don’t think helping out poor people is socialism. I don’t think FDR and the New Deal was socialism. FDR saved capitalism. Of course I’m concerned about my own wealth. Who isn’t? My wealth is increased in a stable society. If we have too many have nots no amount of wealth is safe. I’m no altruist, though I do have a moral code. Like you I’m a landlord and like you I’m currently struggling over the issue of raising rents. I need to raise them because all my costs have gone up. But I don’t want to hurt small businesses who lease from me and I don’t want to create vacancies either, so I have some tough decisions to make. Finally I want more freedom for everyone. There are some issues which can at times supersede that like public health and safety and environmental concerns, etc. But as a general rule the more freedom the better. -
Here come the tariffs

As is George Will: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/09/17/trump-whirlpool-tariffs-putin-poland/ Whirlpool is also a Chicken Little: https://nypost.com/2025/09/15/business/whirlpool-accuses-rivals-of-skirting-trumps-tariffs/ And let’s not forget the biggest Chicken Little of all, John Deere: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/04/business/john-deere-tractor-sales-down-farmers-struggle.html -

The forecast is meaningless. Even if they promise more cuts coming up, the increased inflation caused by the tariffs will change their minds. -

I don’t think it’s a better model. I’m a capitalist. I want people to become as wealthy as they can without limits. Mamdami says nobody should be a billionaire? Screw him. I want to be a billionaire. On the other hand I would like to see a bigger safety net for the poor and less fortunate among us. In that respect I admire Denmark and I wish we could capture that element of their society. I don’t see why we can’t have both a bigger safety net and more capitalism and freedom for everyone. It’s not an either or proposition. -
Nobody has said the roommate turned him in. I think I wrote that the roommate helped the police apprehend him, which is somewhat of a misstatement on my part; what I meant to say is that the roommate’s cooperation with the police helped the police strengthen their case against Robinson- that is according to the governor of Utah. The usual suspects here are trying to focus on your post that the roommate turned him in, which is a false statement. They are doing this not simply to attack you but to avoid the actual fact that the roommate’s cooperation in this matter, which was voluntarily, has been a huge help to the police per the governor. That fact destroys their narrative that this is a tranny crime, trannies are violent, etc.

I appreciate many of the responses to this thread, though some of the racist ones are pretty disgusting. Getting back to the main point I was attempting to make with my example: there is no evidence that liberal policies on crime lead to worse outcomes than conservative policies on crime. There is no evidence that Democratic run governments, state and local, create worse outcomes on crime than do Republican run governments. Whatever you believe the root causes of crime are (and here we obviously disagree widely) liberal vs conservative and Democrat vs Republican are not important factors. -
Here come the tariffs
The Real timschochet replied to The Phantom's Phantom's topic in The Geek Club
For months now you have attacked my warnings about tariffs by claiming that I predict the end of all existence if they continue. I don’t. I predicted bad times ahead, which have already begun because prices are higher. And they’re going to continue to rise, it’s going to get a lot worse. But it’s not going to destroy America. So your response to me is both lazy and insipid. If you disagree with my specific premise that these tariffs are bad for our economy both short and long term, then make your case. But stop trying to exaggerate my response so as to paint me as a Chicken Little. Just makes you look silly. -

It’s astonishing to me that so many people here continue to deny the terrible effects that the tariffs are having already. Is it willful ignorance? The need to win the partisan war even if it means rejecting reality right in front of you? -

I think this is a good post too. I don’t agree with all of it, and I don’t agree with @jonnyutah either. But you’ve both made some thoughtful arguments here and I appreciate the good discussion which is often sorely lacking in this forum. -

This deserves a much longer answer than I have time for. I’ll get back to it later. (I almost wrote “I’ll circle back to it later which is a term my daughters always use and I hate- lol- what does “circle back even mean??) -

You’re very patronizing. Poverty in different countries is relative to the rest of society. If people don’t have enough to feed their children without help I call that poverty. Is it the equivalent of poverty in Bangladesh? No. But it also isn’t Denmark either. -

Very familiar with Larry Elder- I’ve read a few books by him too, and I used to call him now and then back in the 90s. When he was more libertarian and less of a Trumper, when he was the Sage from South Compton. Nice guy. But I disagree strongly with his POV on this subject. Carson I only know from his association with Trump. -

All right sir. You don’t strike me as racist like @iam90sbaby. Perhaps I’m wrong about that (I hope not.) My own theory is that this is due to cultural problems among blacks caused by years of institutional racism against them. I suspect that as a conservative you disagree with this theory? I’d so, how do you explain the discrepancy? -

I understand that you believe that there is something inherently about black people that makes them more prone to committing crimes. But I’m more curious about how the non-racists here might explain this. -

If it isn’t possible doesn’t that suggest that we do not live in a society with equal opportunity for all? -

According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2023, there are 37 million Americans who live in poverty. That’s 11% of the population. Would you say that’s very little? In comparison Denmark has a poverty rate of 0.8% -

First off did we win that war? I would say no. Second, did I define poverty? I don’t recall that I did. So you’re arguing against a straw man. -

When you think of wealthy black people, do you automatically assume they must be rappers or NBA stars?
