I hope so. I will be disappointed if we don’t.

I am not at all a fan of Biden’s populism on this and many other issues. Given the choice between Biden and Trump I will gladly choose Biden. But I would prefer someone a little smarter. Actually I would be a far better President than either of them.
-
They should. If another nations were more welcoming towards immigrants, and embraced capitalism at the same time, they might someday be as great as we have been. I’ve always thought so.
-
On this issue? Well not everyone. But you certainly are,
-
Here’s another one: https://news.stanford.edu/press-releases/2018/11/15/border-wall-cameefit-u-s-workers/ High cost, low positive impact. But hey don’t trust economists on both the right and the left- after all they’re all probably globalists anyhow, right? Trust @supermike80 on the internet! After all his gut tells him this will do literally no harm!
-
Sorry that you didn’t read it. If you had you would have read the part about how terrible it will be for our economy.
-
Yes we need to revamp the asylum laws. We need to revise the whole system. But guys like @supermike80 aren’t for that. They just want to keep everyone out and they think that solution will work. It won’t.

I believe Biden is pandering to nativist populism and it’s regrettable. Undocumented immigrants are not a source of violent crime despite the constant anecdotes that they are. They are a vital part of our economic growth. The wall is wasteful and will actually hurt our economy.

https://www.brookings.edu/articles/the-wall-the-real-costs-of-a-barrier-between-the-united-states-and-mexico/ Urge you to read this and then reconsider your assertion of “no harm at all.”

It’s very difficult to stop and search all entry points without slowing down free trade. That’s the problem Abbott ran into. Even slowing down trade for a few hours cost Texas’s economy millions of dollars.
-
Not for those seeking to come for economic reasons. Not really for anyone from Mexico.
-
If you mean it. But you don’t. For most Mexicans and other Latinos the only way to come here is illegally. There is no legal path, no line.

Illegal Aliens & the Schocheting of America
The Real timschochet replied to HellToupee's topic in The Geek Club
I’ve never understood this argument. Of course things are much better here! Of course anyone lucky enough to live in the United States (including myself) should be forever grateful for our freedom, safety and opportunities! But why does that mean we shouldn’t criticize, protest, seek improvement? Why shouldn’t we strive to make this a more perfect Union? When racism and misogyny occurs here we should call it out, and you shouldn’t scold us for being ungrateful. -
In any case it’s going to be built so the arguments against it are pretty much moot now. We’ll see what the results are if any. I don’t think it’s going to solve any of our border problems (and if it does it will only be a temporary fix) but we will find out.
-
Building the wall isn’t racist. It’s just stupid and poor policy. Trump’s overall approach to illegal immigration was certainly racist. And he does want to keep out non-whites, no question.
-
The harm is that it sends a terrible message to the world, the opposite of the Statue of Liberty.
-
I believe in border security. But I doubt a wall is such a good idea. All the border security in the world isn’t going to solve this problem though. What we need is to reform our immigration system. And even more importantly than that, we need to address the reasons these people are coming here: terrible economic conditions caused by political instability and man made climate change. If we don’t address these fundamental issues we could build a thousand walls and it won’t stop our problems.

Supreme Court considers Biden’s student loan debt relief plan
The Real timschochet posted a topic in The Geek Club
Today the SC considered President Biden’s student loan debt relief plan. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/politics/live-news/student-loan-forgiveness-scotus-arguments-02-28-23/index.html So here’s what I think: I am in favor of some sort of debt relief plan. The unfairness of it doesn’t bother me; I think our economy will benefit if these college grads have more money in their pockets to purchase homes, home ownership being IMO the key to a strong and prosperous society. So that’s basically why I’m for it. But I don’t like the way Biden went about it, and if the conservative members of the Supreme Court decide that Biden does not have the authority to do this of his own accord, I’m inclined to agree with them. In general I am troubled about how each President we’ve had, regardless of political party, keeps attempting to take more and more executive power away from Congress. I get that a big reason for this is that we are so divided on issues as a country that it’s extremely difficult to get any kind of significant legislation passed, because half the nation always seems to oppose whatever it is. But that’s too bad. We need to find a way to resolve that problem, and giving the President too much authority is not the way to do it. Thoughts? -

In two threads you have dismissed my arguments and called me dumb. But you’re not providing any kind of rebuttal. If you want to discuss this further I’m game. But if you simply want to be insulting then we’ll leave it at that. -

Please explain why inflation is a world wide phenomenon and higher in most other western countries than it is here? How did Biden make the price of eggs go up in Sweden? -

Whenever conservatives complain about spending you can be sure that it’s only spending they don’t like. -

It’s redirected funds. But even if you’re right, using the debt is still an absurd argument. It’s as if your kid asked you for a dime for his piggy bank and you said “sorry I have to pay this $20,000 mortgage for the next 30 years, THEN I can give you that dime.” The numbers involved in our annual deficit and total debt are so vast that arguing over this expenditure, for that reason, is totally irrelevant. In any case I think it will end up adding to revenue, more so than a.tax cut does. -
