We’d be applauding if Biden made a joke about the spouse of a Republican being brutally attacked? I don’t think so. I would hope most Democrats aren’t like you. I would hope most Republicans wouldn’t be either, but they’re constantly proving me wrong. What happened to decency?

The frightening thing isn’t that he made that comment- everyone knows what a jerk he is. The frightening thing is that the audience cheered and laughed. Who are these people? I’ve known Republicans my entire life. I don’t recognize some of them anymore.

It’s impossible for Congress to take action on ANY of these issues if they’re unable to govern. That has to come first.

I made my views clear about this trial already. But it doesn’t justify Trump’s actions. I DO blame him because this clerk is an an innocent girl; she had nothing to do with this prosecution and it amazes me that you’re okay with it. Trump is a POS.

It is a huge win for the Dems if they play it right. “We are the party of competency” needs to be the message. It’s all they need to do.

90% of the Republicans IN CONGRESS are against this. But I don’t think that applies to the base. I’m pretty sure they’re strongly behind Gaetz.

Not a fan of McCarthy at all but it would be better for the country if he is saved. However it needs to be tied to Ukraine funding.

How about we stipulate that: 1. Trump did not cause Covid. 2. Biden did not cause inflation.

This thread is a microcosm of what we are facing as a nation. There is no news, no evidence that will turn Trump’s supporters away from him. No matter what happens they will find excuses, or blame Democrats, or both. There is nothing to be done with these people. I still think most of them are good people, and that they have been duped, But at a certain point you must take responsibility for having been duped. The only thing the rest of us can do is try to beat them at the ballot box. I sure hope we can.

Actually it is. We are going to win this war the same the Soviet Union won the Vietnam War- by supporting our ally with money and equipment until the other guy gets tired.

And it’s also interesting that @JustinCharge, while claiming to be a thoughtful independent conservative, is rather indistinguishable from a propagandist for Putin

As I mentioned earlier I’m not happy with this particular trial. I’m not going to defend Trump- it looks like he did what he’s being accused of and it’s against the law. But unless the state is willing to go after all of the big time developers who pull this sort of nonsense (and as I previously mentioned, I believe the practice of overvaluing properties is prevalent in the industry) then this does strike me as a selective prosecution. And that’s unfair, even to Mr. Trump.

As an example: I would like to live in a society in which the vast majority of people believe that violence is unacceptable. And I think I do. However there are those, usually a small minority, who hold that violence is a perfectly acceptable means to achieve what they regard as a noble political end- usually we hear this sort of thing from either the far left or the far right. They have the perfect right to express this opinion and that right should always be sacrosanct and protected. But the rest of us have the right to be intolerant of such opinions and offer them the respect they deserve which should be none IMO.

I think it’s perfectly fine to be intolerant of anti-scientific nonsense, or of racism, or of bigotry. Not all viewpoints deserve respect in the marketplace of ideas. (When I use the word intolerant I mean attitudes only- I don’t mean to say that such ideas should be LEGALLY restricted.)

Newsom resisted some pretty heavy pressure to select Barbara Lee. She’s in a 3 way race with Adam Schiff and Katie Porter for the seat, and running behind them. If Newsom had appointed Lee it would have made her the favorite I think. Now she’s out of it and I suspect that the race will come down to Schiff vs Porter. I’ve liked Schiff for a long time but he’s certainly a controversial character and pretty much hated by Republicans. Porter is less well known nationally but she’s done a lot of good things for my neck of the woods. Give me Porter.

I don’t care where she lives. This carpetbagger stuff always struck me as meaningless.
