last minute shopping list for nuclear war
The Real timschochet replied to JustinCharge's topic in The Geek Club
Now I’m curious as to how much would be needed. -
I’m going to Long Beach this weekend to listen to some blues.

I’m going to Newport Beach this evening for dinner. There’s a part of it called Lido Isle, with an oceanfront boardwalk that has all these cute little restaurants and stores. Charming and gorgeous; can’t beat it. All of Southern Cal is like this; you guys can suck it. I am living the dream life.

House averts shutdown as McCarthy works out deal with Democrats
The Real timschochet replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
It’s also interesting that a majority of conservatives are getting ready to vote for a guy for President who very clearly doesn’t agree with any of the principles you just listed. Not one. -

I believe in all of those things. So does every liberal Democrat I know. Each one, however, has limits, and I don’t agree with your applications. -

I appreciate many if not most of the conservative arguments in this thread. Not all of them of course, but most. What I fundamentally reject is the conclusion of “there’s no way we can improve things because the culture won’t allow for it so let’s not do anything.” This is what every conservative argument seems to ultimately lead to. -

George Soros is not the only one who finds the National Immigration Law Center. I’ve sent them money. They do good work. -

House averts shutdown as McCarthy works out deal with Democrats

Hey @Voltaire I believe in everything you wrote in this paragraph. But I am a liberal and I intend to vote Democrat for the foreseeable future. I realize that is a contradiction in your eyes but it’s not in mine. I wish you would open your mind and allow for this fact. Liberals love their country and what it stands for as much as you do. -
AG Garland Appoints Special Counsel For Hunter Biden Case

Garland is holding himself up well in this hearing. But it’s hard to argue with idiots. -
Fascist attacks on Individuals and Speech
The Real timschochet replied to jonmx's topic in The Geek Club
Fascism is a right wing ideology and 100% of the fascist attacks these days are coming from the right. Every judge involved in the Trump indictments has received numerous death threats. Same for the prosecutors and investigators. Same for the members of the grand juries whose names have been revealed. Those in the last 3 categories who are African-American have been the targets of hate speech as well to go along with the death threats. The goal is to terrify these people into withdrawing their pursuit of Donald Trump. And this is not new. Mitt Romney wrote in his book that more than one Republican senator voted to acquit Trump during both impeachments due to fear for their families after death threats had been issued. This is what Fascism is all about. -

He’s opinionated and his political views are certainly very liberal. And he’s an arrogant New York Jew who delights in pissing people off. He doesn’t suffer fools very easily. But his economic skills are unrivaled. -

That’s because you have been reading the wrong economists all these years. Start with John Maynard Keynes, and then move on to Paul Krugman. They get it. -

I’m watching this hearing with Merrick Garland and the Republicans are making such fools of themselves. Perhaps the real reason they want to shut down the government is to prevent their embarrassing themselves in any more of these public hearings. -

“Nuclear War Shopping List” is the name of my favorite Clash cover band. A nuclear error, but I have no fear cause London is drowning and I…live by the river! -

Of course, personally when I’m trying to define dumb people, I start with anyone planning on voting for Donald Trump in 2024. That’s not true or everyone but as a general rule it works for me. -

The Real timschochet replied to RLLD's topic in The Geek Club
Straw argument. Of course there are smart people and there are dumb people. There are cultures that promote education and cultures that don’t and as a general rule more smart people come from the cultures that do. But cultures advance and digress and are subject to change, and we shouldn’t judge individuals by the culture they come from either. The racist part is when you attempt to categorize smarts by race, or by cultural features that you regard as permanent. -

I would like to defend @RLLD here. I don’t believe he is a racist or has written anything racist. His views on this issue are somewhat similar to Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s from the late 60s, who wrote that there are cultural aspects to American blacks that hurt their chances of success, including education. RLLD is not arguing that these are a product of racial makeup or genetics, but a product of culture. I want to make it clear that I disagree with RLLD about the extent of this as a cause, and vehemently disagree with him about what conclusions he draws. But it’s not a racist argument. There are people here who have made racist arguments in this thread, however. -

This hits the nail on the head. It’s not racist to criticize liberal solutions. It’s racist to claim that the problems are inherent in race. -

Speaking for myself only, I don’t blame systemic racism for the school situation. I just think some of the comments here are racist. Liberalism is certainly partly to blame for what is happening in that liberals often throw money at these schools in a lazy fashion without dissecting the real issues. (Meanwhile conservatives often cut money from these schools in a lazy fashion without dissecting the real issues.)
