How will the conservative solutions alleviate any of the misery?

More than actual policy positions, the worst aspect, IMO, of the Trump era is a return, by conservatives, to anti-intellectualism. I say return because conservatives have had these attitudes before, in the 1950s, the 1920s, the 1850s. You guys disdain experts and yearn for simplistic solutions that usually make things worse. Your attitudes toward immigration, Covid, climate science, gender issues, our international commitments, racism- all part of the same problem.

Well obviously I disagree. The border is a crisis right now but it’s not a catastrophe, and the point of the opinion piece I linked is that the solutions you want to try will only make things worse not better. As to your last point, there are no Democrats who want “open borders”. I want more open immigration, never open borders, but unfortunately there are far too few Democrats who even want that. What Democrats want is to avoid Republican solutions which to liberals come across as cruel or too draconian. Other than that they have few solutions to offer (as the opinion piece also points out.)

I don’t think simple, lazy solutions to complicated problems ever work. But it’s looks like we’re going to find out, once again, the hard way…

Terrific opinion piece in the Washington Post this morning: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/01/18/border-migrants-gop-immigration/ It makes a very reasonable argument as to why current Republican proposals to secure the border would have little to no effect on the flow of migrants. The Democrats don’t have any good ideas either. What is needed is more creative approaches of the sort that are impossible given today’s xenophobic attitudes on this issue.

“Help process the illegal aliens we plan to keep letting in.” First off nobody plans to let anyone in. And they’re adding a thousand more border agents to stop it. As far as processing everyone who requests asylum has the right to a hearing but there’s something like a 3 year waiting list. Thats where the help for processing comes in. They’re not just stamping illegals and letting them through.

And suppose Trump does win in the fall? Does anyone really think he will be able to push through his proposals on immigration? He couldn’t last time around. He won’t this time either ; he’ll never get 60 votes in the senate to do it. If you’re truly concerned about border security this deal is the best you’re gonna get.

There is also the suspicion that House Republicans don’t want any kind of deal on this issue because keeping the border in a crisis benefits Trump, and them, in the fall. I think that’s a reasonable assumption. Biden on the other hand would like this issue off his plate as much as possible, therefore he’s willing to make concessions now that he would never make after being re-elected, at the risk of alienating part of his base.

No you’re correct (though obviously I don’t share your interpretation.) Crockett’s facts are correct, which is my point. We can disagree on how to react to those facts. But I would add that many Republicans in the Senate are in favor of this compromise on the border. House Republicans are opposed to any kind of compromise (as are some leftists as well, to be fair.)

I think it’s very likely he was murdered. I don’t disagree with the DOJ that it’s impossible to prove. But- according to the police officer, Michael Brown, who was unarmed, was running away from the officer, and then suddenly turned around and charged him. It seems very unlikely to me that an unarmed man running away would turn around and charge an armed police officer. Not impossible but very unlikely. Thats why I believe he was murdered.

What facts did she get wrong?

A jury found her story believable. You on the other hand believe Donald Trump. Based on his track record, why do you think Trump is credible on these issues? Especially when, after claiming that Carroll wasn’t his type, he confused her photograph with his former wife?

If Carroll is telling the truth then I think the crime is more serious than a misdemeanor. Don’t you agree?

Why are you making stuff up? Plenty of unjust shootings in the past few years. Also, who was President when Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown were murdered?

The best book about Trump’s handling of Covid is The Divider which is based on interviews with those around Trump at the time. You can’t read that book, filled with facts that nobody denies, and go away thinking that Trump did anything close to a good job. He was terrible, the worst President dealing with a crisis in the history of this country.
