Rachel Maddow defends MSNBC's refusal to air Trump's Iowa victory speech
The Real timschochet replied to seafoam1's topic in The Geek Club
I haven’t forgotten anything. The Mueller investigation was a huge news story and was reported heavily as a result. Was it reported fairly? I think so. -

Of course. All newscasts have to decide what to report. Their main goal is ratings. -

This isn’t true at all. On several occasions I was watching a press conference or speech by Biden that was showing on CNN and MSNBC and out of curiosity switched to Fox News- they didn’t show it. Which BTW is their prerogative. I’ve got no problem with it. -

I’ve said that their news reporting is accurate. Same for Fox News. -
Joy Behar says 'grand wizard' Donald Trump risked lives by encouraging Iowa vote

She doesn’t like Donald Trump. -
The Republican base wants an end to immigration (starting with illegal immigration but eventually all of it), an end to America’s international commitments, and high tariffs on international trade. These positions aren’t exactly “far right”, but they’re the reason Trump is loved and Haley is not.

Probably because you’re unaware of the historical context of that statement? Hillary wasn’t imitating a black person, she was quoting one, the exact words of a legendary elderly woman who was determined to maintain the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 however long it took to change policy. Hillary was celebrating that triumph and those words, and the crowd she spoke to understood that and appreciated it.

Incidentally, I disagree with Maddow’s argument. I would have shown Trump’s speech and then dissected it, pointing out the obvious untruths. But what they chose to do instead is hardly worth the condemnation or wrongful analysis it’s receiving here. -

Censorship is a regular function of news broadcasts and in itself not troubling. Only when government gets involved does it become a bad thing. And nobody is stopping you from making up your own mind. Nobody is forcing you to watch Rachel Maddow which goes to my earlier point about boycotting MSNBC. There were numerous ways you could have watched Trump last night if you wanted to. There is no suppression of speech going on here. -
Read the responses by Hardcore and Dizknee. Not sure they would stick with that in the end but I think it’s indicative of Trump’s base: they want a total rejection of the old type of Republican- the sort they label “RINOs”. If nothing else Trump understands his base well. He will not choose Haley or anyone like her ever again.

Right about what? Im not a huge fan of Rachel. I can take her or leave her. She's not a deliberate liar IMO, but she’s heavily biased. She’s no journalist. MSNBC’s on-air personalities are mostly opinion makers and not journalists. There are some exceptions- I would label Andrea Mitchell a journalist for example. But mostly they discuss the news in a manner consistent with the perspective of their core base, which is liberal. I’ve never claimed otherwise. But I don’t believe they deliberately lie and the news that is reported is accurate and can be trusted. I think the same is largely true for Fox News. -
This will not happen.

I think all of you should probably boycott MSNBC. -

Lions cover. Bills cover. Ravens and 49ers win but don’t cover. -
You know what the main difference between us is Jon? It’s that I think you’re wrong but I don’t think you’re evil. And you think that I’m both wrong and evil.

Exit polling says the number one issue is illegal immigration. Iowa has 37,000 illegal immigrants: less than 2% of the population. The scapegoating on this issue, on the Republican side, is frightening.

Except that’s not what he wrote. Read it again.

If people are willing to call themselves that I wouldn’t term it pejorative. Do you think people resent this label? Everyone I’ve ever known who says they belong to this group seems pretty proud of it.

I laughed. -
Millions of Americans identify themselves that way. So I would start with that: those who refer to themselves as evangelicals. I used to think it meant Protestant religious Christians who believe in the Rapture, among other specific beliefs, but it’s probably broader than that.

So here is the Biden people’s view of how this goes down: 1. Starting tonight, Trump wins the GOP nomination fairly easily. 2. At least one or more of the criminal trials against Trump take place before the election (most likely the Jan 6 one) and he is convicted, 3 The economy and inflation continue to slightly improve. 4. MOST IMPORTANT: When Democrats and independents realize, sometime in the next few months, that the election is a binary choice between Trump and Biden, Biden consolidates their support, they return to the fold, and Biden wins a relatively easy victory. While a lot could go wrong with this plan, personally I think it’s the most likely outcome.

Yes you’re expressing what most conservatives believe I think. Traditional Republican positions on immigration, trade, and our international role as the defender of democracy are no longer the popular pov of Republicans in general.
-
DeSantis would be wise to drop out tonight and endorse Trump. (At least, wise in terms of his political future.)

After New Hampshire. in those days sitting Presidents didn’t announce their candidacy for re-election. LBJ had people on the ground though in New Hampshire and he was on the ballot. When McCarthy surprised with a strong 2nd place showing based solely on a platform of an end to the Vietnam War, LBJ decided not to go any further.

The universally hated part was what I was trying to get at. You could make the argument that over the years McConnell has done far more for evangelicals than Trump, and unlike Trump, McConnell is a very religious man. Yet they really dislike him, and love Trump.
