This is a really terrible argument. There has been slavery throughout history for every race. But black slavery in the Americas (mostly the United States, Haiti and Jamaica) is unique in history because it was based on skin color. Thus it cannot be compared to any other slavery before or since.

Why am I constantly blaming rhetoric from conservatives? Because conservative rhetoric is constantly hateful towards gay people, especially in recent years.

99% of undocumented immigrants have nothing to do with fentanyl. Don’t you know this?

If you can find a way to cut down or significantly reduce the amount of fentanyl coming in over the border without impacting trade, I’m willing to entertain it, no matter what impact it might have on undocumented immigration. But the two issues aren’t really connected.

The amount of fentanyl coming over the border is a real problem. But it has nothing to do with undocumented immigration. Apples and oranges.

If you want to make arguments against illegals, there are plenty of reasonable ones to make about their effect on local economies and the cost of them being here, etc I might disagree with you but at least the arguments are valid. This one is not; it’s based on ignorance .

Well there you go. All of you that claim that this bigotry is overstated, that all you really care about is protecting your children, feel free to defend this post. Or several of the other posts made in this thread. I don’t believe that the vast majority of conservatives are bigots. I know that’s not true. What I accuse you guys of is tolerating it, of allowing it in your midst because these awful people are supposedly on “your side”. And until that ends you bear a certain amount of responsibility for the ugliness that comes.

I don’t find your analogy to be comparable. Being a trans is not the same as puking all the time or imagining yourself to be god. You’re attempting to apply simplistic arguments to a very complex subject- which, incidentally: is the main issue I have these days with conservatism in our current era.

This is crap. First off it’s not a mental illness according to any doctor of repute. Second, all of the bigotry and hatred now displayed against trans was previously displayed against all homosexuals. Gay people recognize the exact same rhetoric, which is why they’re so welcoming of trans people as among their number.

Because there’s no correlation between how smart somebody is and how good an athlete they are? Unless of course, one is a racist like yourself. Also, for the record, “lefties” aren’t your opponent in this debate. Decent people of all political stripes are.

I’m honestly not sure what I wanted. I was depressed when I started the thread, still am. The opening post was an emotional plea. I’m sick to death of all the anti-gay, anti-trans stuff being spread around lately, in recent years. I see a direct relationship between this rhetoric and the increase of these sorts of crimes. I want it to stop. I haven’t enjoyed reading most of the responses here.

To suggest that genetics play any role in crime is racist and offensive. I don’t believe you are racist; the person you’re replying to here is. This sort of argument also is ignorant of history and common sense. Any basic examination of human civilization will tell you that the largest amount of crime is committed in the poorest communities, regardless of genetics or ethnic background. In the US black people have always been, as an ethnic group, some of the poorest folks among us. Why this is and remains so is a complex question and reasonable people differ on both the causes and the solutions. But they commit more crimes because of their economic status. If any one, including the racists among us, want to dispute this, all you need to do is find examples of black people from a middle class or better background committing these sorts of violent crimes. I think that will be pretty rare.

This is false. I posted a link that anti-gay hate crimes have increased tremendously in recent years. I shouldn’t have had to offer it; that fact should already be apparent to anyone paying attention. But it isn’t. I started this thread because the latest example hit close to home for me since I’ve been to that store. I want this sort of hatred to end. You immediately attacked me. What does that say about you? Then other posters, all of a conservative bent, immediately posted some really disgusting anti-gay rhetoric. Then a few others have decided to flood the thread with examples of crimes by black people. It’s awful. It’s disgusting. I’m honestly saddened by it. I usually try very hard to understand those I disagree with. In this case I’m really having trouble.

God there’s a lot of ugly in here. Almost all of it coming from the conservative side. So awful.
