Well the reason I wrote “social and economic” is because it’s more complicated that just economics. But if you examine western history, for centuries, you find that crime occurs much more in poor urban areas than it does in poor rural areas, and that’s regardless of race. Obviously crowding is one reason.

There are many many reasons that the urban poor are in the situation they’re in. I agree with you that lack of self-responsibility is part of it. But the legacy of racism is also a part of it. Liberals shouldn’t pretend it’s all the one, and conservatives shouldn’t pretend it’s all the other. It’s a combination and whether you feel responsible or not, as an American you, I and everyone here have a duty to try and fix it as best we can. Have a happy Thanksgiving.

These thugs are indeed very likely part of the poorest among us. And you’re quite correct that the poorest among us benefit more under Democratic policies. Which is one reason I prefer Democrats because I like helping poor people.

Yes I understand the argument you and others here are making. I’m telling you it’s hugely flawed because the thugs who committed this crime aren’t thinking about the prosecutor. I guarantee you they have no idea about the justice system and whether it’s favorable to them or not. And, as a liberal when it comes to criminal justice, I must say this is a major flaw in conservative thinking on these issues: you believe that strict punishment deters crime. And the evidence shows quite the opposite. Crime is a result of social and economic reasons, not the level of punishment.

Possibly because this guy is authoritarian. He’s closer to Mussolini than Ronald Reagan. I don’t think the word conservative fits. That’s my same problem with Trump. Far right populism is not the same as traditional conservatism. It’s frankly scary.

Also a misdemeanor is not an unchargeable offense so that’s not right either.

Thank you. That law says that under $950 it’s a misdemeanor. But obviously that doesn’t apply here so how would it have contributed to this crime?

This has nothing to do with liberal policies or conservative policies. It has nothing to do with race or diversity (except for the fact that this sort of crime is usually performed by those of low income, and unfortunately in our society, in urban areas, that usually means minorities). What it has to do with is that criminals have figured out a new way of stealing: the flash mob. Like a new football offense that the defense hasn’t had time to figure out, it’s been highly successful: it’s well organized and quick. Eventually however security and police will find a way to counter it. But until they do we can expect more of this.

All you did was repeat your original point. I will ask again: you stated that Los Angeles Democrats are soft on crime. What “soft on crime” policies, specifically, contributed to this crime? What specific Republican policies, if enacted, would have prevented it? It’s not a complicated question. Since you blame this crime on liberal policies surely you can describe what you’re referring to.
