This is pretty much what I predicted over a month ago. However, I have to admit that Democrats are holding firm. They’ve impressed me. And while Trump doesn’t GAF Republicans do. So let’s see if they can stay unified.

You keep repeating this but the additional subsidies are still necessary. Removing them makes healthcare insurance too expensive for millions of Americans. Even the Republican leadership acknowledges that.

Sorry I have no idea what this is, and I have never been there.

Tim’s thread about anything but politics

I am currently reading 5 different books: 1. A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett. This is a re-read. I read it first about 20 years ago. It may be my favorite Follett novel. It’s about a British bank in the 19th century. Reminds me of Dickens. Really enjoyable. 2. If It Bleeds by Stephen King. This is part of my attempt to read his Holly Gibney saga. I enjoyed the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, and the first half of the Outsider, then it started to slog. This novella continues the slog. I’m determined to get through it so I can read Holly and Never Flinch but it’s getting harder. 3. Crooks by Lou Berney. This is a new author for me and I love him. I’ve read 2 novels so far, Dark Ride was an excellent thriller. This book about an Italian crime family is awesome, maybe the best novel I’ve read in a few years. 4. The Civil War by Shelby Foote. This is taking forever but I’m really enjoying it. It’s 3 volumes, 7000 pages. I’m deep into Volume 1. Strong narrative. I hope to finish it before I’m dead. 5. Warlock by Jim Starlin. This is a comic book from the 70s. I’m rereading it on my Marvel unlimited app. I’m going to read all of the Jim Starlin Thanos stories through the years. Thanos is one of the great supervillains.

This is a whole other topic but it’s because libertarian ideas, while great in principle, are extremely difficult to impose on a welfare state. Rolling back regulations is one thing, and often a good idea; simply cutting government spending and letting the chips fall where they may is another, and can lead to major chaos. Mileli seems well-intentioned to me (not corrupt like Trump so far as I know) but he has done far too much of the latter and as a result Argentina is struggling big time. Personally I have no objection to helping them out; I agree with @jerryskids that it’s probably in our strategic interests. But it’s also important to point out the irony here of this being championed by the whole “America First” crowd. “America First” has always been a horrible credo anyhow with isolationist, xenophobic, and racist overtones.

    Another month of controlled inflation

It doesn’t require a whole lot of thought to analyze your bigoted garbage post.

    Another month of controlled inflation

More racist nonsense from @jonnyutah. Thankfully his vision of what America should be does not match what the public wants.

Umm I think you’re confused here. Giving up the aid to Argentina is not part of any negotiations. It’s used as a rhetorical argument, nothing more.

    Don’t you mean Argentina first?

Not a good look for you.
  11. The other interesting aspect of this is that they’re now trying to paint Mamdani as the new face of the Democratic Party. That’s going to backfire big time.

You have a very poor memory if you believe that ACA wasn’t a major compromise from what Obama originally wanted.

Again it’s not idiotic. A year, rather than permanent, is a major concession, an attempt at real compromise. Now you’re demanding that the Democrats compromise further while the Republicans do nothing. That’s not the way negotiations work. And that’s the whole point. From the start the Republicans have refused to negotiate about any of this.
  14. What does Mamdani have to do with the shutdown?

Because people still need the money; they won’t be able to afford ACA otherwise.

Again if they offer that I’m betting the Dems will accept it. But they won’t offer it.

Here is Townhall.Com, reacting to the Supreme Court stay on SNAP payments: “Good! SNAP is RIFE with fraud! Time for MASSIVE CHANGES to the program, and no more dessert cakes, sugary junk, luxury coffee, etc.” “Please sir,” said Oliver Twist, “May I have some more?” “MORE!” Mr. Bumble roared. “More, you ungrateful wretch!”

So the original demand from the Democrats was to make the ACA subsidies permanent. Now they are compromising, asking for a 1 year extension only. Thune says it’s a non-starter. Why? Why keep the government shut down over 1 year of spending?
  22. The Real timschochet

    US Federal Government Shutdown Thread

I don’t know what the thinking was. But it seems to me that what you’re suggesting would mean simply including the ACA extension within the current CR bill. Which I’m pretty sure the Dems would go for, don’t you think?
