LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs
The Real timschochet replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
No. But I don’t think the tariffs are going to help. And I also think it makes what DOGE is doing even more risky. If the next months jobs report is still bad then I think Trump will be partly responsible because of the tariffs. -

Dems do not stand for 13-year-old cancer survivor: 'Truly sick people'

Average wages are about $50 per hour so your numbers are a little off. And I think that’s the end of this conversation. As usual you display your ignorance with every post. -

Well that’s the point. First off I have no idea if they’re undocumented. I never ask. I assume many of them are but I don’t know. Second, because you have trouble reading: I don’t employ them. They are independent contractors. There is no employee relationship. I don’t break any laws. -

So does Trump. And it’s not against the law to do so. -

FTR (I’ve written this about a dozen times but apparently you don’t read) I don’t break the law, I don’t pay anyone slave wages. When I use day laborers they’re independent contractors; my transactions with them are perfectly legal. Every time. So take your threat and shove it up your ass. -
Suppose the South had won at Gettysburg and occupied Pennsylvania, threatening to invade further north? Do you think that under those circumstances Lincoln would have held elections? I don’t.

I’m not complaining about my life, I’m discussing politics which is something I enjoy. Given the amount of times you respond to my posts it seems that you enjoy it when I discuss politics too. -

I’m going to keep feeling sad for you until Democrats win again and your life will be better even though you’ll never admit it. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy my life and pity yours. What else is there? -

No the families of those 6 cops firmly believe it was because of Jan. 6. Many have appeared on her program. So of course she had a way of knowing, There is nothing garbage about Nicolle Wallace. -

Indefensible IMO. I said so last night. They should have stood up, should have applauded. Very wrong not to do so. However I don’t really have a problem with what Nicole Wallace said. -

Any time you want to actually take issue with a point I’ve made, and explain why I am incorrect, you’re welcome to do so. Not once in your dozens of posts every day have you ever demonstrated an ability to offer a thoughtful opinion on any subject, so I won’t hold my breath waiting for you to do so. Still anything is possible. -
OK fair enough. I think it’s a reasonable assumption to make that they didn’t have the proper time to assess this information. Trump has been President 8 weeks, DOGE in place 6 weeks. I put it to you that there is simply no way in that amount of time to decide what cuts to make. But you may believe differently.

This is also false. I can’t speak for others but let me be clear about my own reaction: 1. I sharply criticized Trump when he imposed tariffs last time around. I wrote it would be bad for the economy. I never wrote it would be a disaster because those tariffs, mostly on China, were limited. But I made clear it would be bad and it was. 2. I was very disappointed that Biden maintained the tariffs. I regard it as probably the worst decision of his Presidency, and said so at the time and many other times. It contributed heavily to our inflation, much more so IMO than his spending (which is what conservatives blame for the inflation.) 3. Trump’s current tariffs are 10 times what he did before, and after April 2 if he keeps his pledge it will be far more than that, it will be the biggest tariffs in history. I believe that these new tariffs, which are unlike any in the past, will be catastrophic for our economy, and the world. I believe it will lead to a recession, possibly another Great Depression, possibly to new wars. I sincerely believe this. My only hope is that Trump is convinced to change his mind or back off quickly. So no this is a not a case of only complaining because it is Trump. Bernie Sanders is also, like Trump, a long time believer in protectionism. If he were President I would make the same warning. Tariffs are a leftist interference in the free market and the bigger they are the more destructive the result. -

I don’t remember this. What you wrote here is grossly inaccurate. -
Cutting employment without a careful examination of what is and what is not essential strikes me as the opposite of efficiency.
-
This would actually be a reasonable argument- IF the number wasn’t listed beforehand. A normal way to cut waste would be “we looked carefully at the organization and determined there were 50,000 jobs that are wasteful.” Thats what companies do all the time. But when you determine to cut 80,000 jobs BEFORE you examine which are wasteful then you’re guaranteeing you’re going to cut some essential services. And it also forces any reasonable person to reach the conclusion that many already have: that DOGE isn’t really about cutting waste.
-
You don’t know this. And I would say it’s unlikely.
-
Again, it’s the speed of the cuts. You can’t tell me that they carefully examined which jobs were vital and which weren’t. They didn’t have the time. And in any case they’re not even claiming this.
-
The common viewpoint seems to be: 1. If there’s waste, get rid of it. 2. Don’t cut spending that will actually hurt our veterans or make things more difficult for them. I don’t think there’s a person here that disagrees with either of these two points; at least I hope not. My problem with DOGE thus far is that it’s too speedy and not careful. I think that inevitably leads to the 2nd point without doing much about the first. If you’re going to make cuts, you should first carefully examine the current state of affairs and decide where the waste is. That process could take some time but it’s worth it IMO. DOGE isn’t do this.

I don’t believe this is true; I’ve read stuff that has asserted the exact opposite. But even if it is true, it’s none of our business anyhow. Leave these folks alone to do what they want, and stop demonizing them. How about that? -

Pretty sure that was a lie. Most of the stuff that Trump said last night about spending were lies. -
