Ok new thread idea. Each day I will highlight a patriot standing up for American values in the face of the growing autocracy. Though I’m no lawyer common sense tells me Cook should absolutely win this lawsuit. “Cause” HAS to mean something more than Trump’s suspicion of wrongdoing.

The old Israel Gaza thread seems to be missing (in any case I can’t find it) so I started a new one. Apologies if I missed it. In any case: 1. I believe the current Israeli government is guilty of genocide in their systemic, deliberate starvation of the Palestinian people in Gaza. 2. I support the Israeli government doing an about face here and, as of today, allowing humanitarian aid in. This will save lives. Point #2 is a big part of the reason I continue to support Israel and see them as good guys. Good countries, including the United States, have committed bad acts. We have committed genocide ourselves in the past. The difference is when we do bad stuff we try to to fix it, we acknowledge our mistakes and wrongdoings, we try to make amends. My right wing friends think Israel can do no wrong. My left wing friends think Israel is evil. Both are wrong. Hamas is evil. Israel is a good country who sometimes does bad things. That being said, Netanyahu is a bad man who needs to be removed from office and probably charged with war crimes.

They’ve never been able to get around the filibuster on this issue. Or on nearly any gun control issue.

This is not a good solution. If selling a gun to a mentally ill person is a bad idea in terms of public safety then it should be illegal to do so.

Free speech isn’t unlimited. Sometimes restrictions are necessary for public safety. The Oliver Wendell Holmes example of yelling “fire!” In a crowded theater is a prime example. I think we can place certain restrictions on gun purchasing as well, for the same reason: public safety.

How about we just make it illegal to do so? Why do you consistently support politicians who oppose this idea?

Let’s move beyond the tranny/mental illness debate. Surely you would agree that there was something mentally wrong with this dude beyond being a tranny (otherwise all trannies would be violent mass murderers and we know that’s not the case.) I think a mental examination might spot warning signs. As I wrote it wouldn’t be perfect and probably some people would get through the cracks. Others would simply purchase guns illegally. We can’t stop them all. But I think we should try to make it more difficult.

Talking to somebody causally, and giving them an interview designed to detect mental illness are two different animals. What I’m suggesting wouldn’t be infallible by any means but I think it would help.

It sounds to me like you vote conservative mostly for economic reasons (such as your complaints about California bureaucracy, etc.) Does the Republican intolerance on trans and gay issues bother you?

Im glad you feel this way. But why then did you post Andy Ngo yesterday? He is an extreme anti-trans bigot, and uses words like “Transtifa” as he did in the quote you posted. You wrote that he sees it “straight”. You can’t agree with Ngo and call youself trans friendly, sorry.

Good morning. What can we do as a society to make what happened yesterday less likely? Here is what I think: 1. All gun restrictions need to be federal. As @TheNewGirl pointed out yesterday, it’s useless for a state or city to have them. Doesn’t work. 2. We need universal background checks. No exceptions for private sales. 3. If this doesn’t work then I would take it further. Anyone who wants to legally own a gun should have to take some sort of mental wellness test. It would include an interview with a therapist trained to detect serious mental illness. The proposed purchaser would pay for the price of this interview.

He mentioned anti-Christian. Was there specific anti-Catholic rhetoric? (I don’t know.)

The good news is that, unlike this forum, the national discussion after this horrific event is about gun restriction, not trannies. Amy Klobuchar is leading the way. It’s true that all previous attempts at change have led to nothing because of Republican opposition. But it’s never too late.

The reason that trans kids need protection is that up to 50% of them have been on the receiving end of violence. They are extremely unlikely to be violent. Today’s terrible event hasn’t changed that.
