It's also a very effective way to show proof of communication, and emails hold key information coming from a sender that is often saved by the recipient for proof of changes in requirements, designs, instructions etc. It's better than the spoken word over the phone because that allows for deniability. Emails are also used for giving links to key points and locations of data. Docusigning important documentation, including legal approvals, as well as instructions etc. I filed my taxes over the internet this year and they sent me key confirmation info in an email.
