I heard another guy say that the combine is great for assessing WRs, cornerbacks, and TEs, but it's impossible to set up drills to effectively evaluate linebackers and interior defensive linemen. There's no possible way to test their in game instincts on the field through drills.

HOFer Bill Polian was on NFL radio today talking about how players get so out of "football" shape because of their preparing for the combine that they have to work for many months, properly, to get back into playing football else many lingering injuries start coming up. Soft tissue, etc. . But he mentioned the combine is great for 2 things. #1 Medicals. The whole structure of the combine, logistically, in Indianappolis, revolves around this. Every year they uncover things like heart issues and other underlying problems. #2 Simple metrics. Height, weight speed etc...
