I use Remote Desktop to access my home server. That way I don't need the "cloud" and nobody else has my data. It's pretty easy. 1 - Use MS Storage Spaces to create mirrored array. 2 - Tell the router to assign a static IP to the server. 3 - Assign the router port that Remote Desktop uses (3389) to that IP. 4 - Remote Desktop to your public IP. Just make sure you use a strong password. The reason I typed all that out is because the only time it doesn't work is when that once every 2 year or so for some strange reason they decide to change your public IP on you.

That tells your DHCP server (router) to change your network (home) IP address on that specific device. All the devices in your home have their own IP address on the home network, usually 192.168.1.X and assigned consecutively. The router will assign them as you turn on and off your devices. Unless you set your router to static and assign an IP to each device so they get the same IP each time. Doing that assigns the same IP to the MAC address which is specific to each device. All that is helpful when doing home networking, but, it's completely different than the IP your modem shows the world. That's assigned by your internet service provider. Unless you use a VPN. The VPN doesn't change the IP assigned to your modem either, rather, it runs your internet traffic through a network of computers essentially creating a tunnel that can show the world a different IP. And you can make the IP appear that it comes from anywhere. That's helpful for geolocating for internet subscriptions for example. Most people use a VPN for the security it provides though. You're traffic is hidden and harder to get to.

Most people would have to go through the internet provider to connect it to a person and address. Joe Public can get the general area usually though. Websites like what's my IP will tell you what city the IP is located in.
