Oh so if you understand fixed income what's your problem with having some of that making a guaranteed 4%. Unlike CDs and individual bonds it remains liquid. High interst rates are the best thing since sliced bread for investors. Plus you're able to use that money to rebalance and POOF you've just outperformed the S&P and weakling investors that don't get it.

Just as an example. You'll find many people saying you should be 50% equities and 50% fixed income in retirement. I'm no where near that. Closer to 25% or 30% fixed. But I have a higher risk tolerance than most people. I guess if you don't have any plans for retirement like GutterBoy you can put all your money into an S&P index and let it ride. And YES over the long haul that should and will outperform a portfolio with 50% equities and 50% fixed income. The difference is volatility. IF a depression comes along the 50-50 portfolio will retain A LOT more of its value during that period. That's comfortable if you've retired and no longer have other income. It's safety. BUT. Even if you're GutterBoy and don't plan on retiring soon you miss out on the ability to rebalance with 0% fixed income. I'd suggest even GutterBoy type people have 10%. That way when stocks are doing good you sell off and buy bonds maintaining the 90-10 percentages. And vise versa. If you did that 4 times like I did this year you just increased your number of shares in both equities and fixed income easily outperforming the S&P because YOU HAVE MORE SHARES. ALSO, make no mistake about it, the feds will reduce interest rates sometime in the future and that environment leads to bonds doing well and equities will go on sale. You don't want to have zero exposure to bonds when interest rates are high like they are right now.

I've made more than the S&P because I have fixed income and rebalanced. 4 times so far this year. It's a pretty basic investing principle to be diversified in equities AND fixed income just for this reason. And it protects you if the crash YOU were predicting would have happened. That's the thing, I'm positioned to do well in any environment. All without guesswork. It's all documented in this thread. I've always had plenty of cash and told people when it was time to rebalance, 4 times so far. Our schools have failed us if some who has a minor in finance doesn't understand these basics. I'd be happy to give you more specifics and examples if you want. You're leaving money on the table.
