Restaurant chain shuts down nearly 50 locations in California following minimum wage hike
Engorgeous George replied to Maximum Overkill's topic in The Geek Club
Never eaten at a Rubios and I don't live in California so I have no idea how competitive the local restaurant market is or how varied are the real estate lease prices, so I can't speculate whether the chain made bad lease deals. Being wholly ignorant on the matter I went to Rubios site and read their "about us" section. Seems the owner started with one stand in 1983 and expanded to over 100 locations. Now I don't know much but I would venture to guess most would call this a success story and the man a shrewed business man, yet in this thread we see folks speculating that he was the cause of his own demise. BTW, the videos of the food looked good. I would try it for sure. -

Did you get naked at the Dells or mess around in the Circus museum? They take that stuff pretty seriously around there. -

Trump's action could have violated 18 U.S.C. Section 595 had he been an administrative employee of the federal government. I believe whether the President fails in that category has been a question recently in a few cases, including the Colorado ballot case. -

Good question. Me personally I find the behavior disturbing. I don't know that it fits within the definition of election interference but it certainly puts some pressure on election officials. I would have to reread whatever statutes there are on election interference to make a determination, but if this behavior is not included I believe that it should be. My post was not about that. It was simply to correct Tim who had misstated the case so as to make it seem more than it is. -
That would be awesome.

My memory may be faulty but I thought Trump was on tape urging them to find more votes, not necessarily create more votes. "Find", if that is indeed what was said is arguably open to interpretation. It could have meant locate votes as then uncounted. Now I don't believe this to be what he actually meant but given his truncated way of speaking in sentence fragments the case is not open and shut. I do note he was uninterested in finding more Biden votes along with votes for him so I have my belief, but it is not open and shut, it is open and push the door closed aginst a slight breeze until it latches. -

With the possible exceptions of Maxine Waters and iof course Joe Biden who likes to challenge folks to a fight, sometimes behind a gym, sometimes at a pool and sometimes during press encounters. He's fiesty for an old guy in safety shoes. Actually for a guy his age he is pretty spry. -

The police in my area will accept a gun for disposal with no questions asked, in theory. In reality I don't think the cops can help themselves from asking questions. -

That to me is the most extraordinary part of this tale. Who throws a gun away in a dumpster outside a school? -

Restaurant chain shuts down nearly 50 locations in California following minimum wage hike

So an informal local survey of wages in my particular area, Southeast of Denver. While driving to and from the local rec center to work out I pass a few businesses. The home Depot has a sign out front. They are soliciting help at $18.50 to $22.50 to start. The local kroger grocery affiliate, King Soopers also had a sign out seekingcashiers and stockers starting at $21.50 to $22.50. The local backerry which delivers to all the groceries had a sign on their truck looking to train CDL route drivers starting at $25.00 per hour with a $10,000.00 bous after one year. I would suggest that the market around me has determined taht they cannot attract employees at minimum wage and the market has compensated for it without any help from pandering legislators. I also found the whole thing interesting in that the Denver area is inundated with illegals yet the job market wages fro incoming, inexpderienced workers has not been suppressed, yet, to the minimum wage. BTW, on the earlier discussion I suggest that a diligent worker, reliable and motivated could perform any of these jobs more than adequately. Oh, the local school has a sign out fro school bus drivers starting at $17.50. I presume the job requires a CDL but don't know. -

Called the fellow who publiched Hunter's laptop data a Nazi piece of feces. I guess I can understand her being angry at the attention that all brought about, it had to be hard on her. Still, this sort of goes into the k[ll the messenger category. -

Ah, found something about this. In biblical tradition, there is a concept known as levirate marriage. This practice is outlined in the Bible, specifically in the book of Genesis and Deuteronomy. Let me provide some details: Genesis 38:8 recounts Judah instructing his son Onan to marry his deceased brother’s wife and raise up offspring for his brother. This was considered a duty of a brother-in-law to ensure the continuation of the family line 1. Deuteronomy 25:5–6 elaborates on this concept. If brothers lived together and one of them died without children, the surviving brother had the responsibility to marry the widow. This practice was called “the duty of a brother-in-law” 2. The purpose of levirate marriage was to provide for women whose husbands had passed away without leaving an heir. By marrying the widow, the brother-in-law ensured the continuation of the family lineage 3 -

Isn't there some old testiment text indicating a man ought to do the duty of leaving a deceased brother's wife with some child? I seem to ahve heard this years ago, but I am no biblical scholar since I find that book (collection of books) boring, poorly written, and frankly idiotic. (That othrers do not is fine by me) -

I leave you to discuss with RLLD then whether by "poor" he meant every one of them, or a percentage of them are such as a result of their decision making. Me, I am off to work out and then to do some kayaking. It is projected to hit 90 here today so I think the water will be a good place for me. BTW, paddling is a relatively cheap and available form of recreation avaialble even to the poor. I got into it for under $600 ten years ago with no additional cost over that time for equipment. I could have gotten in for less but I bought new. I also chose to pay $60 this year for access to the reservior near me (Senior discount, otherwise it would have been $75), but there are places, rivers where I can put in for free though they are not conveniently located near me and so there is cost to get there. Fortunatley I can bare those costs if I chose to do so as my lifetime of labor and my frugal nature has left me with a small nest egg in retirement. -

I don't know that he generalized to all poor people, maybe he did, I didn't see it. Certainly many folks with I.Q.'s less than I have a tough row to hoe, financially. Of course while I was educating myself and supporting that education through minial jobs I would have been classified as working poor. I made sacrifices for years before I started earning a decent living. Would I have preferred my minial jobs paid better, sure, but that was not what the market would bear. Still, I came away from those jobs with more than wages. I came away with experience as well, experience which was valuable as I moved forward in life. even in minial jobs I moved up and obtained supervisory experience. -

Is that the discussion we were having? I think not. On this new discussion I do not think there are 50 million of the jobs I described. Unfortunately when our manufacturing base fled so did many of the jobs that would fall into that category. In the end I agree that there is less opportunity for those with less gifts. i have never argued otherwise. That my friend is life. If you find that unfair and want to subsidize those unfortunate souls be my guest. Just don't mandate that I do so through legislation. Whether I choose to do so ought to be my choice. BTW, given that choiceIi choose, often, to do so. -

I am aware of the term working poor. I am also aware that we were discussing whether those with lower intellectual gifts could make well more than minimum wage. You now want to convert that discussion to one of undefined "high paying jobs" We were not discussing High paying jobs, just making substantially more than minimum wage. There is a range in there, at least to my way of understanding those terms. -

I did not say they pay well, just much more than minimum wage. Already this morning I drove past a road crew. There were flagmen, and laborers shoveling the road base along the shoulder of the road. All make more, substantially more, than minimum wage. How do I know, I used to haveaa ccess to the government contracts that paid them. Across the street from me the homeowner is painting his home. Painting is not rocket science. They estimated my home which unfortunately for them I painted myself two years ago. I have talked to that homeowner and know what he is paying and it is far above minimum wage. There are crews in my neihborhood replacing roofs damaged by hail. Good mindless work that pays well as does the kitchen renovation of my neighbor though that requires a bit more skill, still obtainable by someone with an I.Q. of 90. Diligence, hardwork, reliability are valuble traits, traits employers will pay well for and they are plentiful among those with I.Q.'s in the 90's.
