I loved Granny Hawkins Granny Hawkins: They say you're a hard put and desperate man, Josey Wales. They're goin' to heel and hide you to a barn door. You know what I say? Josey Wales: What's that? Granny Hawkins: I say that big talk's worth doodly-squat. Now, them poultices be laced with feathermoss and mustard root. Mind you drop water on 'em occasional and keep 'em damp. -
Reopening Alcatraz as a Federal Prison
Engorgeous George replied to Engorgeous George's topic in The Geek Club
I imagine reopening would entail demolition to the rock foundations, below the old civil war foundations. i presume because of the era in which it was built it is full of asbestos and lead based paint and pipes. It would be a huge and expensive undertaking not worth the money for the number of prisoners it would hold. Whether it would be worth it for symbolism, well I leave that to others, but the law and order symbolism would be weighed against the historical loss. -
So its not to honor Lynn Dickey?

Reopening Alcatraz as a Federal Prison

Trump's fascination with Alcatraz is probably predicated on the fact that during his lifetime it was still open. It made an impression on his young mind and he assumes that impression resides in the minds of others as a place to be avoided. The thing is, for those under 60 it bears no such symbolism, and for illegals, certainly not. Me. My impressions are shaped by having visited the tourist attraction, having watched the Clint Eastwood movie decades ago, and of course the scene from the movie So I Married and Ax Murderer featuring Phil Hartman as the prison guard/tour guide. -
If you truely believe that are you not obligated to take action instead of arguing about it on the internet?

If he wants to repurpose historically notorious prisons currently owned by the Federal government perhaps he should consider Andersonville. -
I got up early to drive to Steamboat Springs to raft the Yampa. Along the roadway and along the river I saw antelope, bison, bighorn sheep, elk, a black bear, a moose, eagles, a mink, beaver. Not a bad day. I must say, unless we get suibstantial late season snow it is going to be a dry year for the west. Maybe tuesday's projected weather will help. All the rivers and reservoirs are running unusually low and the snow pack seems very light.

But having seen the route back in, and having seen the timing necessary to pass the dangers could not any competent operator get us in there. I mean we have the blueprint. We don't need Stanley Goodspeed unless there are chemical weapons on the island. -

Maybe i should plan a fish fry for friday night. I am pretty confident i can catch my limit for walleye that morning. I like mine better broiled or grilled, but most folks seem to like a good Friday night fish fry. Maybe I'll whip up a cherry cobbler or two for dessert. -

In an homage to AIM and to the 60's in general I could see a bunch of aging baby boomer hippies trying to occupy the island in defiance of Trump, were his rambling and fantasy ever progress top something more than a deliberately inflamatory talking point for the day. Frankly I don't think aging baby boomers would last more than a week as I am pretty sure Door Dash does not deliver to the island. -

Now that would take a true mandate from the people, not the narrow one Trump has which he claims is sweeping when it is not. Frankly I do not see any amendments occuring during my remaining, and likely limited, lifetime. -

Well the 14th amendment has lead to unanticipated consequences. Trump may be right that it should be changed, but by amending the Constitution, never by ignoring it. In that Trump is wrong and dangerously so in my estimation. I trace all of this back to Row v. Wade. Ever since that decision folks have hoped that activist judges and justices will legislate rather than rule. It has us to a dangerous point were we now look to the Courts to do the jobs of legislators, and more importantly, the people themselves. -

Seems every year there is a death in the canyon. I should probably bow down to age and bow out of such things now. Maybe its like Dirty Harry said, a man has got to know his limitations. I can just run my raft and fish lower down from Pumphouse to State Line Bridge. That is more appropriate for old farts like me. -

I seem to have messed up my elbow on the Yampa. Still hurting today. At my age some of the stuff I do is foolish. My brotheer, niece and i were going to run Gore Canyon this coming weekend as she just got a new kayak she wants to try out but if i am not 100% or pretty darn close that would be an ill-advised run for me. -

The term Maryland Man is suppose to distract and to imply some sort of claim to citizenship and residency. They should refer to him as the IllegalIimmigrant who sought refuge in Maryland. As for due process I am a huge believer in it. If Society wants to treat him as a criminal give him full criminal due process. if society wants to deport him as an illegal give him Administrative due process, essentially notice of the allegation and the support therefore, and an opportunity to be heard thereon. -

Ahh yes, driving under the bridges in Denver and Colorado Springs, no doubt. They aproach cars stopped in traffic like the Yellowstone bears approach vehicles, hoping for a handout. You should keep a bag of marshmallows in your car. It is now inappropriate to toss them to bears in Yellowstone, but the homeless gobble them up like crazy.
