Supreme Court repudiates Trump 9-0, says US must facillitate return of man wrongfully deported to El Salvador
Engorgeous George replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
I agree. The Constitution stands supreme. i wish that progressives would follow that dictum with regard to not petitioning and supporting activist judges legislating from the bench. I wish, for instance that if one has a problem with the 2nd amendment that one would seek to change the amendment through the constitutional process rather than the legislatures or the courts, but yes, we have a system and as soon as it is discarded for expedience we really cease to exist as a country. Now as to the individual in question. He unquestionably broke our law to enter this country. When he was last adjudicated on that clear violation he stated the reason he needed asylum was that rival gangs would target him if he was returned home. To me that statement, that he was worried about rival gangs, is an admission that he is a gang member. It follows logically. Still, as a court was not asked, yet, to make that logical inference; the man is entitled to due process oveerseen by a judge. Ii don't sanction any executive administration official doing so on just their say so without presenting their argument to the light of day, to the light of reason, to the light of judicial oversight. -

I'm a country boy. I married a painted up City woman. Over the years she has come around to my way of viewing the world so she will move further out. I require at least 5 acres and at least a four car garaage. I'd like to be able to shoot on or near my property. Oh, she still looks good with a fresh coat of paint. -

LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs

When we moved out here we were under dark night skies and had antelope strolling through our yard. 25 years later and the suburbs have caught up to me. I am looking at places further out. All depends on the economy since I am retired and rely now on my investments. -

China has resisted being the market for us we had once hoped it would be. We have been an ideal market for them. If trade with China is stymied long term I suspect other countries will begin manufacturing cheap crap for us to buy. I know I use to get my cheap crap from Japan, in fact it was a national meme before we had an expression such as meme. Tthen the origin of cheap crap moved to China. We already see it moving again to Viet Nam, Korea, Cambodia, and elsewhere. Eventually it may move again, to Africa or South America, I'm guessing Africa since it is a wholly owned subsidiary of China and China is teaching them the ways of the modern world.. -
Correct. I'd be there if my friends were not around or if they were but it was closing time.

LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs
Engorgeous George replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
Days. That is the problem right there. With the 24 hour news cycle folks want instant results. We are not going to see this establish a new stasis for months if not maybe two years. Still, if we have found the bottom of the markets I can wait maybe up to 90 days to see if new trade deals are being struck. -

I was alive when only Nixon could go to China. Now, amybe I will live through Only Trump could stop trade woith China. Yesterday I took note of the vehicles on my block. Ten homes, 35 vehicles, a remarkable 3.5 vehicles per home. More than one vehicle per person. What interested me was that out of the 35 there was one Ford and one Dodge. There were multiple BMW's, Audi's and Mercedes. Plenty of Toyotas and Lexis'. A few Hyundais. No Hondas which surprised me. Two Nissans. I guess my block is a microcosm of our trade imbalance. I am part of the problem if it is a problem. Ten years ago my driveway had two Fords and a Dodge, today, a Nissan and two Hyundais -
Rep. Jasmine Crockett suggests the United States needs illegal immigrants because 'we done picking cotton'
Engorgeous George replied to seafoam1's topic in The Geek Club
I think they (slaves) were heavily used for sugar cane harvesting and rice cultivation and banana harvesting. They were then brought from the caribbean to the mainland for cotton harvesting during the three generations or so that practice was at its height. I was fascinated to see hand picking of cotton in machine harvested fields. I had a very difficult time thinking that could be a productive use of time. -

So slavery was from 1794 through 1864. That is a pretty short period. I thought it flourished for a hundred years before that and more and involved not just cotton but tobacco, row crops, and labor from building railroads, dikes and dams, to mining and forestry. The explosion after the cotton gin indeed happened, but signaled the beginning of the end and Jasmine certainly knows no one in her family who ever picked cotton. i know there were several aborted attmpts at developing harvesters in teh 1820's. The first practicle one was patented in 1850 though there were unpatented ones prior to that. The first fully mecahnical, gas powered, harvester came about just following WWII. -

Because that was the beginning of conception of machines to do slave labor. It lead rapidly to better seperation machines, but also to mechanical harvesters. Inteerestingly i did see some people in a harvested cotton field hand picking missed bols just two years ago. -

I guess she is unfamiliar with the cotton gin, I'm guessing, like kamala, she's a vodka gal and does not touch gin. -
Heading over to negotiate tariffs on heroine from the golden triangle. We are tired of our trade deficit with them. If they want access to American Markets they can pay, just like everybody else.

Why Trump's tariff chaos actually makes sense (big picture)
Engorgeous George replied to Gepetto's topic in The Geek Club
When the economy collapses as Tim says it will, when my savings are nearly depleted and my teeth hurt because I can't afford proper dental care, I am going to rely on Gravy Train for my meals. Its soft and with its own gravy I should be able to afford it and to chew it. Screw those survival food boxes that keep food for 30 years so you can weather the apocalypse while all around you die. I am going to make my own bucket for way less money. I'll just fill a Home Depot bucket or two with Gravy Train and I should be good to go. -

I have some of his detractors on ignore myself as I too find little value in some of them.

@Fnord is good people. That he comes to conclusions different from my own does not impugn his logic, not entirely, and perhaps not in the majority, though to the latter I think it does. He simply gives posters the benefit of the doubt until all doubt is removed. Me, I only go so far as to provide the benefit of the doubt until 99% of the doubt is removed and I incorporate action and practice into my calculation as well as self-serving words. Maybe @Fnord is to be congratulated on his patience and his grace in assessing others. Maybe I am too harsh in doing so..

Alone there is always the unlikely possibility the Mod made it up. When coupled with Tim tactically admitting it once confronted with it' the evidence seems compelling. When then compared to his behavior here, well you are entitled to reach conclusions different from those I have reached.' I know this, Tim has been advised to grow, to change many times. Often he directly resists. Sometimes he states he will heed advice and he cites that as personal growth, yet he never sticks to his vows of change. He pretends he wants reasoned discussion but what he wants is to endlessly repeat his dogma and to try to pretend it is the authoritative last word on a subject when it never is close to that. He does not want, and is not open, to discussion. He wants to proselytize his orthodoxy. He lies about his intent and his motives. The thing is he has lied to himself. He believes he is open to a conversation, a discussion , he is not. He is to be pitied as he has successfully deluded only himself.
