Round Twelve - Sixteen Commentary - July Mock 2023

Ok. Not sure why they weren't included, but they've been added and I retroactively applied them to the first three weeks. So robb should be in first place now, minus that disaster of a Week 3 performance.

Damn. I think this happened last year. I'll go play around with it.

Sorry I didn't respond to this earlier, I haven't checked in here in awhile. The June analysis is annually done by Fumbleweed and he doesn't participate in the July mock. The last few years there has been an article posted on the site with a "top ten things I noticed" theme, but it looks like that didn't happen this year. I think, since the original purpose of the mock I believe was to provide a source to site visitors to get an idea of what a draft might look like and the reasons behind the picks, your post drawing attention to it is a good idea.

That is not what I, or my #1 RB, wanted to hear.

The QB drafting was screwy this year and I'm wondering if it's a sign of things to come. Last year, after four rounds, two QB's had been selected (Allen and Herbert). This year, six had been taken. Last year 13 QB's had been taken by the end of round 10. This year, 19 had been taken. With 8 starting positions (I'm not counting DEF), that means most teams are drafting a back up QB before back up RB's/WR's.

I set this up on MFL, best ball style like we've done the last few years. Double check your rosters, if you can, to make sure I didn't make a mistake. https://www44.myfantasyleague.com/2023/home/42335#0

QB: Geno Smith, Anthony Richardson RB: Rhomandre Stevenson, Miles Sanders, Javonte Williams, Damian Harris, Jaylen Warren WR: Cooper Kupp, Chris Olave, Terry McClaurin, Jordan Addison, Jakobi Meyers, Rashod Bateman TE: Dallas Goedert, Mike Gesicki DEF: Dolphins Not a particularly inspiring team, but I don't think it's bad. Not overly thrilled with any position, although I do think my WR's can contend with any starting three in the league. QB's are boom or bust. RB's are meh, but they don't suck. Goedert is solid and the Dolphins are a defense. I would need a few things to fall right: One of my QB's would need to step up. The Patriots would need to NOT sign a RB and Williams would need to come back strong. Oh...and Kupp would need to play a full season.

You are correct. With OBJ and Flowers in the fold, volume is a huge question mark, but I figured there are huge questions marks everywhere in the fourteenth round. Hill's a worthwhile grab, especially when you have a solid TE like Kittle. Lots of upside with him, especially if they use him outside of his TE position.

Bateman is a former first round pick, so the talent is there. Baltimore has a new O-Coordinator and it's looking like they are going to pass more (I know, not difficult). And Bateman was looking pretty good last year before his injuries. If he can get (and stay) on the field, he has the potential to far out perform the WR6 spot he holds on my roster.

First snipe in the 13th? Consider yourself lucky. I've been sniped at least three times. With that said, I like the Collins pick. With Cooks gone, he could easily step into the WR1 role in Houston. And while their passing game is nothing to get excited about, snagging a teams potential WR1 in the 13th round is great value.

Jaylen Warren put up over 600 yards last year and often looked like Pittsburgh's best back. Early camp reports say that the Steelers are trying to find ways to get him on the field. He'll have some stand alone value, but if Harris goes down he could easily jump into low end RB1 territory. At this point in the draft, we're all throwing darts at upside and I think he has it.

Jakobi had a career year last year (fantasy wise) and gets reunited with McDaniels. The Raiders traded Waller and talk is Renfrow might be let go. If so, that makes Meyers the clear #2 target in their offense. With Adams drawing the attention of defenses, that should give him a lot of opportunity.

Was hoping Gabe Davis would fall, but sitting on three RB's (one with medical problems) it's probably good he didn't. I think Harris had the most to offer from what is left. I think he'll be the early down back and will be used on the goal line. He's two years removed from a 15 TD season where he was sharing time so I think he has a pretty high floor.

Was eyeing Tua for this pick as I was not expecting six teams to grab a back up QB in front of me (very pleased I did not pass on Geno last round). When he went I was satisfied with getting JSN to stack with Geno. Thanks, again, Guru. Decided to gamble on what I believe is either going to be a home run pick or a major whiff. He's been labeled by some as the most athletic QB ever and looked like Superman at the combine. He has the coach who developed Herbert and Hurts guiding him. But he is extremely raw and very well might not start the year. I think, and am hopeful, that when he does take the reins he'll play to his potential.

Was very tempted to wait another round (technically two) on a QB as I was the last to take one. But knowing the history of the league (thanks for the clue in robb), two to three backup QB's usually go in rounds 9-10. There were very few QB's that I liked left, so I grabbed my favorite and the one that I think has the most upside. Geno was QB6 last year. With a year under his belt in the system and the addition of another fantastic weapon, I'm hopeful he can produce similar numbers.

Minnesota ranked 3rd in pass attempts last year and they lost their RB1. Adam Thielen took his 107 targets to Carolina. I believe Jordan Addison is better than Thielen, so he should be able to at least top Thielen's WR30 ranking last year. I'm good with that from my WR4.
