I don't like the looting, violence, property damage either. In the case of Charlottsville, the Nazi's/KKK/White Supremacists showed up the night before with torches, shields, and clubs. They set the tone and let everyone know that they were there for more than peaceful protest. The opposition accepted the challenge. I wouldn't expect them to counter protest without appropriate equipment.
