Update: DK Metcalf traded to Pittsburgh

well, when it comes time to pay a player, you need to look in the mirror and ask yourself if that player will help you win a championship if he stays. I think this team is a good couple years away from being highly competitive again, so if they can unload him and obtain a good asset or two now is the time. whoever buys has him for 1 more year and they can worry about signing a big extension. I would hope it would be a football trade where they get players who address a need on the team rather than a draft pick deal. but that's not likely the way it will work

    49ers Trade Deebo to Commanders

let me ask you a question, do you think San Fran will be another 7 win team next year? or do you think this is a one off? I think San fran wins at least 10 next year and most of the players who saw a dip will see a statistical rebound of sorts. There were a lot of things not working in that offense. The O line was one of them. they were not as good in pass pro and the players who played wide (aiyuk and deebo) had the worst results. your slot receivers and TEs did ok. what does that tell you? it tells me the QB isnt having enough time to hit the deeper throws. I dont think this is a team that will let this situation persist into next season. So yeah I will throw out the stats. you can sell on all your 49er players if you want. personally I'm buying on Pearsall as I think hes ready to make a jump with Deebo gone. Whether he has a 1000 yard season remains to be seen but I'm guessing hes good for at least 750-800.

Id honestly throw all of last years stats out the window. the whole team in San Fran performed poorly and they had a ton of injuries which likely contributed to this. but I guess you could look at this as another reason to reduce his usage in this manner, but the reality is.... its a different offense so the way a player gets used there would never be exactly the same as the way hes been used in another offense. This is why when a player switches teams the floor usually goes lower and the ceiling can sometimes be higher. as fantasy owners, you rarely know for sure where exactly the player will land within that range. but I do think given Deebos wishes that he expressed loudly when negotiating his last contract, he didnt want to be used running the ball as much. so I think there is a decent chance Washington will adhere to his wishes in that regard. while I wouldnt expect Washington to completely remove the WR runs from their playbook, I would expect them to be more selective about when they will pull a Deebo Run play out of their bag of tricks.

    Saquon Barkley

well, regardless of who is the RB2 in Philly, they should be taken as an RB4 as a handcuff by the barkley owner. I dont think they have any substantial value to anyone other than the Barkley owner. good handcuff value. Thats about it. If I dont have Barkley on my team I'm not really interested in either of them otherwise as I dont think they will return any value while Barkley is healthy.

    Saquon Barkley

That may be a sign that Shipley is ready to take over RB2 duties. we shall see. Barkley is a talented pass catching back so there is more PPR upside in him than what we saw last year. as a rookie he got 91 catches for 721 receiving yards and 438 in year 2. then for some reason New York went away from using him in the pass game but I dont think that skillset disappeared.

    Saquon Barkley

that O line is killer. if Barkley goes down whoever goes in will put up RB2 numbers. in this scenario, thats about as good as it gets.

    49ers Trade Deebo to Commanders

this may be true, but there is no guarantee that he will continue to be used in this manner. This is a different offense. ONe of Deebos issues when his last contract was up for negotiation is he didnt want to be used in this way. so it may be reasonable to expect less use in this manner. I dont think you ever remove an effective tool out of the toolbox but maybe you use it a little less to keep the wear and tear down and to keep the player happy.
  8. Ray_T

    Saquon Barkley

you could be right. we likely wont find out for sure until training camp is over or at the latest.... week 1 I do agree Shipley has more upside. but I've seen situations where the veteran holds of the kid for the lead backup role (or the starting role) and its tough to get in the head of the coaches. The good news is.... we dont have to make a call on this right now. as more info comes available we can make a better decision. the one thing I would make clear.... whoever is the RB2 in Philly should be your handcuff RB4 if you own Barkley.
  9. interesting plan. I especially like the trading back to acquire extra assets part. my opinion is this team has way too many holes in the lineup to fill. So trading back to get extra picks (especially if those extra picks are in the top 3 rounds) is key. I think the team Still has a minimum of 2 years of rebuilding but this will stockpile some players. With Belichek gone I dont know how the player development would have changed but that needs to be the focus with such a young team overall. There is a cap on salaries but not a cap on coaches/player development type people, so if running a budget team this is where you spend and dont be cheap about it. Develop those young players and make them pros.

Skins have 2 starting calibre RB. I suppose if an elite one falls into their lap they can take him in the draft, but this is not something that is on fire. The defense is on fire. They should be addressing this in the draft. This is their #1 need.

    49ers Trade Deebo to Commanders

I get it. part of the problem has been health, but thats been a San Fran problem off and on for a few years. it is possible that removing him from San Fran may eliminate exposure to whatever it is that seems to be causing the 9'ers to have so many injuries. but he is in a contract year, so I'd expect him to perform. if he doesnt perform this year, he will likely not be given an extension. what drives me nuts is when teams sign a player going into the final year. they are depriving themselves of that boost that usually comes in a contract year Either way, I dont love what he delivered relative to his salary but last year was a bit of a dogs breakfast for the whole team. Deebo was not the only 49'er to have a bad year. I think if he can stay healthy he is probably a 1000 yard WR. but I dont know that he ever touches that high watermark year where he got 1400 yards receiving and like 2-300 yards rushing. That is probably a thing of the past.

    49ers Trade Deebo to Commanders

it was a good move for San Fran because they did not have to retain any of his salary. thats why the price was so cheap. when I heard he was on the block I assumed there would be some salary retention to get a better draft pick.... but nope. not the case. but hes a significant cap hit for Washington.

    49ers Trade Deebo to Commanders

honestly it seems like every other year San Fran is riddled with injuries. I think its either the field or something in the way they train. I do know that WR are counted on to block a lot more in this system than they do on other teams. but I dont think thats it. The whole team seems to be riddled with injuries and its been happening off and on for a number of years now. its to a point where I'm convinced there is something in San Fran that is leading to more injuries there. Another point is that I truly believe that there were too many mouths to feed in that offense. when fully healthy CMC is the focus and Aiyuk and Kittle were the next 2 big mouths. not leaving a ton for Deebo. granted CMC was hurt but it feels like deebo was too. seems like he misses a couple games each year to injury. Either way he hasnt been the same player since CMC arrived and I dont think that's by mistake. I can see a rebound of sorts in Washington. I dont know that he will be the top dog in that offense, but I can see him having a decent enough season there (assuming good health)

Thats clearly the area that needed improvement. but this move allows them to focus more on the D at the draft. an O line guy might be nice too but I dont know that that is as urgent as the D

    Mock drafts are biased

well, that kind of puts it all in perspective doesnt it?
  16. Ray_T

    Mock drafts are biased

quite possibly. Though honestly, the smarter move for the cowboys is to get a plug and play O lineman (if they can do it) the scouting report on Dak has always been hes far less effective if you can get pressure on him. and his best years by far was when the Dallas Cowboys had a top 5 O line. That said, it wouldnt totally surprise me if they took a RB but usually Jerry likes to have a good line too so either option could be THE option for him.
  17. I suppose. but that's giving up another first round pick(it is my understanding that this is the current asking price for STafford) and if they moved on from Rodgers Contract, can they afford to take on the Stafford contract? that feels like an awful lot of money. my belief is they need to sign one of these contracts that was just terminated where they could sign the veteran at the league minimum. someone like Cousins. but that stupid contract really makes this difficult for the team to make things work.

    Mock drafts are biased

I think early season mocks are mostly dun for fun and clicks. They dont care how accurate it is. They just want you to click on their outrageous picks and picks that will get them some attention talk about it. More clicks=more ad revenue. Thats all this is about. sure I'd buy that small school guys get undervalued in a mock draft. Because nobody cares about the small school. There are no clicks to make money from it because the fan base is small. there are not a lot of reputable organizations whose mock drafts I truly believe in. and this is the reason. The mock isnt generated to be accurate. its generated to get you and me to click on it so the advertiser can make them some cash. the best mocks are likely from sites like fftoday or footballguys. why? because they also have a reputation to uphold. Throwing out a trash mock draft will hurt their bottom line in the long run so they will try to make the mock draft realistic. in the end you as a reader need to understand this is just as much for entertainment as it is for anything at this point in the year. So most of your mocks are not going to reflect the realities of the NFL draft.
  19. agreed on all points. I'm not sure why the giants would pay for a 37 year old QB who has not been overly healthy. Now moving him to a team where the O line isnt good. thats a recipe for more missed time for Stafford. as for Fields, hes ok. thats it. hes not leading you to a superbowl. to that end, I dont know why the Jets would buyout Rodgers when his most likely replacement isnt better. I guess they could try to sign Cousins who had the same injury as Rodgers. perhaps an extra summer off will allow him to resume his prior form. but I really dont see the point in letting Rodgers go to sign someone inferior and then have to pay both players. I suppose if the relationship in the dressing room was a disaster as well, it could be a case of addition by subtraction but I didnt see much in terms of reports of locker room conflict with Rodgers. That doesnt mean its not there. some teams are good at keeping a lid on these things. though I guess the Jets still have to get fans in the seats, so maybe the plan is to make it look like they are doing something, when in fact, they are actually throwing in the towel. if thats what this is.... I guess that's fine. but the way this was done feels wrong. it reeks of desperation. anyhow, I guess its (thankfully) not my problem. I'll just eat popcorn and watch this gong show develop.
  20. agreed. Rodgers put up better numbers than fields last year, and had a losing record. granted, the D underperformed. but if fields puts up numbers anywhere close to what he did last season, the team wont be better than last year and could be a whole lot worse. I do expect the Defense to be better than last year, but still.... Fields needs an awful big improvement on last years numbers to keep this team competitive. 200 yards a game wont cut it unless the defense is playing lights out.
  21. yeah, I dont truly know if fields will ever be the franchise guy teams are looking for. he has the potential to deliver some wins in the role of a game manager. Thats how he was used in Pittsburgh. pretty conservative offense, but he didnt turn the ball over (which was a bit of a problem for him in Chicago) but given the yardage he was putting up, you just cant win with that unless you have a top 5 defense. Even with no turnovers. I know people are excited about the guy, but the best I see is a perennial 8-9 or 9-8 team with him at the helm. good enough to be competitive but not good enough to REALLY compete. Look at his stats last year. 1 300 yard game. one 250 yard game and the rest were around 150 yards (or less). Thats just not good enough. He won because the team around him was good and the defense stuffed a lot of teams early in the season. I think there is still room for him to grow but I dont know if there is enough room for him to one day be more than a placeholder for whoever starts next.

    2025 QB Draft Class

I'd say its closer to being an average class. it mostly looks weak because this years class is so good. Possibly one of the best of all time.
  23. well, hes at least serviceable. I do think Rodgers is the better QB today, but in a year or so that wont be the case. Due to his age, there is not a lot of tread left in the tires. If you do not think you will win in the next year, there is no point in trying to make it work with Rodgers. he threw for just under 4000 yards, 28 TD and 11 INT. not actually bad stats if you can keep the TD-INT ratio at the point that it was. Personally I dont think the implosion in New York is 100% on Rodgers. a good part of this is the Defense was not nearly as good as they were the year prior. Team lost a lot of close games too. I figured they would come out of the gate slow. Rodgers hadnt thrown a ball in quite some time and the start against a Healthy San fran team to start the year wasnt a good way to open the season. 7 of their losses were 1 score games. in my opinion, if they win half of those they are likely in the hunt for a playoff spot. if they win 2/3 of those they are likely a playoff team. but it looks like Rodgers is gone, so the team needs the next best option (whatever that happens to be) Is that player Fields? I dont know. it could be....

    Patriot WR's?

sadly there are a ton of unsuccessful people with talent. and getting along with coaches and teammates is also important but usually doesnt prevent someone from succeeding (there are rare exceptions) in my experience, talent is only a part of the equation. ( To be elite at the highest levels, you also need a love for the game and a competitive drive. if you dont have those, you will never be more than a Meh player. the best player in the game is not always the most talented guy on the field. sometimes its the player who refuses to lose and raises his game.

    2025 QB Draft Class

early mocks are done more to get clicks than for any other reason. I bet not all the scouting reports have even been fully analyzed yet The only picks at this point remotely predictable are likely the top 10 and that is very fluid at this point.
