    Round Seven-Ten Commentary - July Mock 2024

Needed to take a WR here, with only 2. and I felt there was a significant dropoff after this. Calvin Ridley may get decent volume here. hes a low floor high ceiling guy. as for the QB I didnt feel good about the type of QB that would be left to me 22 picks from now if I didnt take one now. thought about taking Dak, but I figure with Zeke returning, some of those TD passes from last year will turn into zeke runs in the red zone and CeeDee is now holding out. so that adds to the risk here. so I went with Goff

  6. well, ADP values are a function of what have you done for me lately? and he had a QB tossing him the ball and that QB is no longer an NFL starting QB. While you never know how much is the fault of the QB, the Coach or the WR I am inclined to think that its not all his fault. Nobody in that offense performed which likely means it is either the coach or the QB. Neither still have their jobs. some saw his trade to Carolina as Pittsburgh giving up on him but maybe its a case where everyone needed a fresh start. He gets this in Carolina and I do think he can turn it around. but there is risk there too considering he has a rookie QB so I dont know if there is a 1000 yard season there for him this year or not. I think he gets close. but the rest of the offense in Carolina also needs to step up and be better too. given where he just got picked I'd say its low to medium risk (which is decent at this point in the draft)

agreed. the draft hasnt played out exactly the way I'd like but so far it has been fun. its nice to test yourself against a high level of competition.

mcBride and Zamir White went the 2 picks before I was up. so its not like those guys were an option for me when I was picking.
  9. absolutely. you were right about this. if you wanted him this was the time to take him

drafting on the end is tough. you pick and then its 22 picks until you pick again. tough to plan a draft that way. I like DK but not really sold on the QB situation in Seattle. Pickens got over 1000 yards last year with a QB who is no longer a starter in this league. so the arrival of Russell wilson should be an upgrade there. So bottom line, I liked his upside more. and I know your thoughts on Barkley, it actually wasnt my plan to take 2 RB at that point, but I do think Barkley is well suited to the Eagles offense. running behind a far better line, and a far better offense and better team overall. he will get a lot of late game carries during garbage time and even if hes not as good as I'd hoped, he will get the yardage on volume. pick 5 and 6 I actually wanted to take McBride and Zamir White but both were taken just before I was on the clock. I hate getting sniped like that but it happens. That said no complaints about Kittle. for me both TE's were close in terms of what they are likely to deliver and both have risks associated with injury. for Kittle the risk of injury is to him. for Mcbride the risk is in his QB. but take a look at McBrides stats after week 8 when Kyler Murray came back from injury. Pretty sick. I know the sample size is small, but over a full year, that projects to well over 1000 yards. Granted when a player breaks out quite often once teams learn hes dangerous they will do things to hinder him. but hes a good guy to consider in lieu of the top tier guys and provides the same upside with a bit more risk.

The case against the top WRs

I think you are right. I rarely endorse rookies, but I saw him on a crossing route, ball was thrown behind him. looked like an INT and Harrison contorted his body, reached out his hand and pulled it in one handed and kept running. didnt even need to slow down. it was quite impressive. for that reason I actually think he scores more TD than fftoday is currently projecting in their rankings. anyone with a catch radius that wide is gonna be an awesome red zone target.

10 team. see the original post. he said he was drafting 10th at the turn.

12 team. there is a link to the mock draft page on the main fftoday page. check out the picks. I have yet to draft a QB so you'd at least approve of that part.
  14. Had to take a couple minutes to compose myself. Mr. Landry and Robb sniped both the guys I was planning on taking. I love both McBride and Zamir White, but alas it wasnt meant to be. such is the curse of drafting on the turn. either way, Kittle is nice consolation prize. 1000 yards receiving last year. Thats better than nearly all of the WR left on the board. Not keen on the fact he gets injured as often as he does, but beggers cant be choosers, the talent level drops off significantly for TE from here on out. Then I decided to take a risk with Swift. hes also often injured but playing in an offense in Chicago that could potentially be explosive. And with the rookie at QB its also possible they will run the ball a lot. Lots of uncertainty with this player but lots of upside too. he is my third RB but can play in my flex spot so this feels like a no brainer.

  17. I'm in Calgary. no risks associated with the fire other than the fact we are breathing in smoky air and the weather being exceptionally hot. Most of the fires are in Northern Alberta and I live in Southern Alberta so there is no safety concern for me. I do appreciate your concern. Thanks for asking.

The case against the top WRs

a legitimate concern. There is significant risk here. lots of people dont see it that way because Tua was healthy last year, but the effects of a concussion are cumulative. that doesnt go away. Not completely anyways. and this is a risk many are not taking into account when taking Miami guys. I just took Waddle in the July Mock. his ADP in the source I checked was at #20 overall but I took him at #37. at that point I felt the risk was more in line with the reward. And given how many good drafters passed him over up to that point, I have to think many of them felt the same about his risks.

    2024 Top 10 Te's

I dont either. I'm just saying hes not the top TE on my draft board.

    RB Rankings

There is always an exception to every rule. I drafted RB-RB on the turn in the July Mock, but all the WR I felt were worthy of a first round pick were gone. sometimes when the draft turns in a way you dont expect you are forced to make hard decisions. In my case I had to reach for a WR I felt wasnt worthy of a first round pick or draft 2 RB's who I felt were. granted its a 12 teamer and not a 10 teamer so that makes a difference. But you need to be willing to pivot based on what the draft is giving you and I dont like joining in on the end of a run at any position. if 7 or 8 RB were taken in round 1 like in last year's Mock and I came up at the turn I might have taken one, possibly two WR. but the draft didnt fall that way. Its a classic case of having to go to plan B.

    2024 Top 10 Te's

to add to this, there is only one other TE in the history of the NFL that has produced at this level at the age Kelce currently is. Tony Gonzalez food for your thoughts. while I do think hes still a startable TE. I just dont know that hes the #1 TE in the game anymore.

    Broncos Rb's

I think honestly its all about how he performs. last year his burst didnt seem good at all. but I also wasnt expecting it to be. thats one of the last things to return when you injure your ACL. and given that he damaged other ligaments too I'm not surprised. but at this point if he goes into camp and still has no burst, they will likely turf him if they think he cannot recover from the injury. ACL isnt a career killer like it once was, but when you combine it with other injuries within the knee it can still kill a career. but with ligaments its so subjective. in talking with a doctor friend of mine he says there are a number of factors that affect how the ligament heals and we dont get access to that information through the press. all we hear is that its a torn ACL/MCL/PCL (or whatever). so there is no way of knowing, but the team knows and their doctors are on it (at least I would assume they are) this is one of those where I'd look at the camp reports. if you hear reports that his burst still isnt back, that would be concerning. but if you hear hes looking good, I'd consider moving him up your board. Sadly this doesnt help you if you are drafting this week but it may help those who are drafting closer to the start of the season when most drafts are done.

    Broncos Rb's

I read that article and it actually looks like speculation and click bait. yes he didnt have a good year last season, but we also know he was recovering from an ACL tear where other ligaments were damaged too. that takes longer to recover from I suspect. (at least it should) the second ligament damaged will naturally affect the rehab. I was avoiding him at the draft table last year for this very reason. I do agree if he cant turn it around this year, it may not end up happening but it might be too early to write him off

Percentage of Draft Budget to RB position

to be clear, the only reason to keep McCaffrey is if you think you can win it all this year. if you cant, a trade is likely in your best interest. I dont think CMC has a lot of staying power. hes at the top of his game now, but I'd be surprised if he can stay at the top more than 1 more year. Hes pretty fragile, and a guy like that who takes up that much of your budget is kind of a dangerous player to keep on the roster. that said, if you think you have a championship roster, you swing for the fences and see what comes of it. hopefully he stays healthy for you.
