It dragged on because his defense attorney fought absolutely everything. The last request for moving the date of the trial was denied. Then about week ago (according to today's news) she requested a deal. The prosecution spoke with the families and then offered 4 life sentences without parole and without appeals and so no trial and no death penalty. I don't think they know his motive.
