LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs
SaintsInDome2006 replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
He's declared more than one national emergency. Trump also used the IEEPA to employ the Alien Enemy Act, that is where the rounding up individuals would take place. But as were discussing earlier new camps haven't been necessary because Trump has been using state and ICE facilities in Louisiana and Texas. -

It was climbing under Biden. -
I agree with you, we are. But I certainly don't think maga folks are defined by some ethnic or religious characteristic. It's ideology.

We're all Americans.

Part of this tariff decision is a declaration of a national economic emergency. He's already done it. Trump is using the National Emergencies Act and IEEPA to bypass Congress. -

My dad has a brick there, as do several uncles, and my wife's grandfather. It's very saddening. -

Dear dude working 9-5 at your factory or Walmart, please call your stock guy and ask him to recalibrate your $40K portfolio. -
American culture glorifies weapons and denigrates education. This is who we are.

I'm sorry to say but murders and violence amongst youths are pretty common in this country.

Marxists use this kind of language. We're individuals, not comrades involved in some international struggle against global capitalism. -

I agree. And we already saw that play out in Covid. Trump's one normal decent speech in his term was when he went on the air when the market was crashing and he announced the Treasury would be shoring up the market. He won't do it this time, there's no Mnuchin and the Big Finance guys that surrounded Trump last time. It's basically Maoists with the mindset of some of the people you see on the board here. -

First part is simple our former allies in Asia and Europe will turn to China. We will put a wall up around us, and everyone else will say fine. China will step into the trade breach and sweep up our voluntarily losses. -

As for FEMA, I'm from Louisiana. I'm wondering who's going to rebuild roofs and deliver water. As for any detention camps, I think that's already been resolved - Trump will use the military and state prison facilities, primarily Louisiana and Texas. I really hope that doesn't happen though. Something I think is interesting is that Trump's administration is making grand claims about how many illegal aliens they're rounding up, but we don't see the camps. So I don't think they're doing what they claim they're doing, beyond sending out Noem & Holman on raids so they can be seen on Fox, Newsmax, RWB etc. -

See this is the thing. Constitutionally tariffs are 100% Congress' prerogative. They have the right, power and capacity to stop all this, but again, this would require so much as maybe 10 Republicans in each chamber forming a coalition with Democrats. -

I've come around on this too. I know much is said from all quarters about Trump's ignorance of basic history and simple economic theory and things like that. But let's face it - they teach about Smoot-Hawley in Econ 101, and though Trump didn't get right into Penn he had at least 2-3 years of business school, and the first thing they teach you - and it would have been especially strong when Trump went, when the Depression was fresh in everyone's minds - is that tariffs are economic poison. You might as well use leaches or bloodletting to cure tuberculosis. It's deemed that medieval. But more than that - Trump has been president for 1.1 terms and you can be sure he has had the full weight of the best economic experts, even those totally beholden to his cause, inform him about this poison. Not to mention the discussions he must have had with bankers & other experts over the years. He knows. -

I come from Louisiana, so we have the history of Huey Long here, but you can look to other tinpot caudillos, it's always the same: he will enrich himself and those who maintain his power. -

He's gotten elected president twice and he's evaded sentencing on the conviction of 34 charges and trial on another ~50 charges including the highest federal crimes. He's capable of such calculation. -

Personally I don’t think he believes that. IMO one goal of the tariffs is the declaration of emergency powers. Another is that foreign leaders, US governors & US corporate execs will have to come to him personally for exceptions & carve outs. And coming from Louisiana I can tell you that the idea of shifting revenue burdens via sales taxes & ad valorum taxes such as here & all but removing the burden from the wealthiest is old hat here. It’s the Louisiana-fication of America. -

“An old fashioned term that we use -- groceries. I used it on the campaign. It's such an old fashioned term, but a beautiful term. Groceries. It says a bag with different things in it." - Actual President. -

Basically last November picked up a hammer and decided it would be best if it just started regularly whacking itself in the head with it.
