Alex Garland is an interesting director. He started out as an author and, frankly, I thought his biggest novel (maybe the only one?—the beach) kinda sucked. It was sort of iconic as far as the Thailand backpacking scene goes but he seemed to have a really strange perspective and outlook. I did not really like him much after reading that. But then he’s done some really great stuff in movies. He wrote 28 Days Later which was just phenomenal. He also wrote Sunshine which, imo, was criminally under appreciated (check it out if you haven’t). He wrote and directed Ex Machina, which was nearly masterful. And he directed and adapted Annihilation, which I think was a pretty difficult task and pulled off better than people appreciated. So anyway, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and watch this one, although I must say civil war is about the last thing I want to think about right now. Curious timing on that, but I suppose it’s probably part of the purpose?
