I'm certainly not indicting all parents; I was specifically talking about these parents. Our kids went to a private school for many years, so I have some insight into how the minds of affluent parents work. At the risk of sounding sexist, by and large the dads (presuming they were something of a self-made success) would have agreed with me to whip the tar out of their kids if this happened. The moms are the unknown variable -- some would agree, others would have the "not my baby!" attitude. None of them would agree to any punishment that was on a lasting record, though.

Yes on both counts. Going with my son (he's 28). We have tickets for W practice round, and Th/F rounds. We just got a free upgrade to a club kinda thing for Wednesday -- covered, bar and food, TVs, restrooms, on the 18th hole. If we like it (and/or the weather looks bad for Th/F), I'll look into paying to upgrade those last two days, presuming I can. It's only money, why not enjoy it? Arriving in Edinburgh Saturday night, staying there until Tuesday morning. Got my Rick Steves guide and audio tours. Then renting a car and heading to the west coast for a tour of the Oban distillery, and check out the town/views of the Hebrides. Then drive down to Troon. May take a few jaunts into Glasgow for dinner during this part, which is pretty close. Drive back to Edinburgh Saturday -- not sure what we are doing that day, other than a pub to catch some of the tourney. I actually was just looking into going to Stirling castle and another distillery or two on the way back. Sunday we have tickets to the Edinburgh castle. Monday I fly back -- he is staying another week; his GF is flying out to meet him. I'm not sure exactly his plans, but they include staying in a castle somewhere. I wish I was staying another week, doing a 3-4 day golf package, and spending a few days in the highlands. Maybe next year. I'll try to remember to look for a poker chip marker. In fact, maybe I'll look for something small, like that, to send to whoever wins the EdEx next week. I certainly will be swag shopping. -

I've pointed out to Tim that "Scientific" American stopped being scientific a long time ago. It should change its name to Woke Progressive. Here is a link to a substack article written by a former writer for the magazine, describing this. https://michaelshermer.substack.com/p/scientific-american-goes-woke -

Ah, the old "it's the messaging" line, which if not invented by, was perfected by Saint Barack. The Left has the full power of the MSM and Big Tech (except X) behind it, but it's the messaging. -
You don't hit an inside the park HR against Randy Johnson without consequences.

That could have happened to any pitcher, but somehow it is perfect that RJ did it. -

Again you miss the point and argue policies. The world is a dangerous place these days, Gutter. The chances of us getting neck deep into a war, and/or of one of the many terrorists waltzing into the country doing something horrific, are quite high. You may be comfortable with that guy on the debate stage getting a call at 3AM that NYC was just nuked, but a lot of people aren't. But since you mentioned policies: Strike already pointed out that your Covid take is laughable. You equate managing a supply chain distribution to dealing with the onset and developing a vaccine in record time. Regarding abortion, Trump is going pretty centrist on this. In fact, he got the RNC to ease up its position for the first time in decades: https://apnews.com/article/republicans-abortion-party-platform-trump-rnc-5561e857c5501df9864ab8ca666d8bc5 -

Pretty shrewd move by Trump. It's a totally plausible thing to offer, since it came up in the debate. He knows Biden will refuse, and in doing so, it reinforces that Biden is feeble. That Biden spokesman in the OP sounds like his head is going to explode, he's so angry. -

I think Biden is doomed because of what I call the "my mom" factor. Back in 2004, John Kerry was running against George Bush, and Kerry was the prohibitive favorite. My mom was an old school, pro-union democrat. Voted that way her entire life. But in 2004, we happened to chat on election day and she told me she voted for Bush. Wow, really Mom? Why? She explained that we were at war, and Kerry seemed weak, and she just didn't trust him. Of course, Bush won that election. I'm not arguing that Kerry was weak, but rather that was my mom's perception. And, I presume, that of a lot of other people like her. Similarly, if you have any functioning brain cells, you couldn't watch that recent debate and NOT have at least a little pause regarding Biden being in charge during a serious crisis. I don't know how many truly undecideds there are at this point, but I've got to think that debate pushed enough of them over to Trump to make a difference. -
Yeah, my kids were raised like I was: if you get in trouble in school, you get it twice as bad at home. One of my daughters was suspended for a social media thing. It was a questionable offense but she had agreed not to post anything about a specific girl (I think she liked something someone else posted). Also I found out she lied to me about details, as I was talking to the principle about it. I confirmed that nothing went on her permanent record. The real punishment was that this suspension prevented her from being in a school theater performance, so she learned a hard lesson and we didn't have to add any punishment.

You may not like Creed or Scott Stapp, but WOW. What a turnaround.

I liked Creed back in the day. Also Nickleback. What can I say, I was never a hipster doosh (just a regular doosh). -
Yeah, when I read this: I thought hmm, good job parents in raising a sociopath. I imagine the parents of this kid have severe "not MY baby girl!!!!" syndrome.

Ima put a placeholder in for Scheffler as my pick, since I'm going to be in Scotland and don't know my availability when the draft starts. If you don't hear otherwise from me when the draft starts Monday morning, that's the pick. I'm thinking of doing something... maybe stupid, maybe not, and going in a different direction. But I don't want to hold up the draft if you don't hear from me. @edjr, do you have my cell phone to ping me for later picks? I'm guessing you do from Venmo, but if not let me know. -

That was... interesting. Spoiler alert: I will say that I didn't love the ending for two reasons. One, although they did a great job convincing us that the kid was dead, the fact that she was alive seemed somehow inconsistent with the plot. Two, I didn't get why Creasy (Denzel) went with the bad guys in the end. The deal was a life for a life -- little girl for bad guy's brother. Yet he walked over that bridge to the Voice, and they took him like they expected it. Maybe I missed something, probably. Or maybe he didn't want to die in the presence of the mom and girl. I'm just nitpicking though, still a great movie.

My opinion that world despots perceive Biden as weak is supported by the facts that during Biden's watch, Putin invaded Ukraine, Iran-backed Hamas attacked Israel, and China is escalating against Taiwan. Similar? Different? Let me know. -

That's probably why I said "I do think" instead of presenting it as any kind of fact. Also you seem quite agitated about this. Methinks the leftie doth protest too much. -
I watched Man on Fire yesterday. I had never seen it, and it has been recommended several times here. Didn't disappoint, it was great.

Baseless? I mean, I haven't talked to any of those three, if that's what you mean. Also, from your Trump whataboutism, I guess you mean that Biden has a 4 year head start down the road to senility? Congrats, I guess. -

I didn't say that either. Regarding Ukraine, I'm not exactly sure what the plan is. It reminds me of a project I was on early in my career. The finance guy told me that our funding was just enough to keep us on life support. I think his exact phrase was "keep us from turning blue from lack of oxygen." I got a new job shortly thereafter. Perhaps it is some sort of 4D chess to keep Russia distracted and depleting resources. But I don't see an end game. Back to the weakness, I do think that world leaders, particularly the Putin/Xi/Ayatollah types, view Biden as feeble and, by association, weak. I've been saying since before the 2020 election that Biden had begun cognitive decline. Folks like you didn't see it (or didn't want to see it), but it was there if you but looked. -

I didn't answer it because I had already told you that I wasn't arguing the guy's point; rather I was merely showing that he wasn't trying to thank God for Putin, and explaining what he was (somewhat poorly) trying to say. HTH -

I was going to ask if we're allowed to shoot carjackers now, but if he did brandish a gun to US Marshalls, that's definitely FAFO. Could be a Darwin award if he had managed to die. -
