I visited the 9/11 memorial in NY this past spring for the first time. A friend of mine died there -- we were in grade school together. It's moving to read the name of someone you personally knew on a memorial like that. Today I was at the DBacks/Rangers game, and they sang God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch (great job by a Phx cop). During it my mind went back to the first World Series game after 9/11, and George W Bush throwing out the first pitch. Like him or not, that was probably the baddest-ass thing I've ever seen a president do. For those old enough to remember, the start of the WS was considered a big risk, as we didn't know if more bad things were planned. Bush hopped out of the dugout, shoulders back confidently, walked out to the rubber (not in front of the mound like a weakling), and threw a strike. I remember having a calming feeling at the time, thinking that everything would be OK. I know we do a lot of partisan bickering here, but may God bless America and the souls whose lives were lost that day.
