  1. I'll admit that this Katie Phang is not hard on the eyes. Relatively unusual for a progressive woman.
  2. I don't know who you are, but seriously, this is your big win? Snopes once again shows it's a Leftist shill. The "predicate crime" is the entire point. HTH

Interesting, thanks. So would you advocate programs to encourage parents to stay together?

We were never really helicopter parents, except for times with my daughter's diabetes, which I don't count. Interesting that you became helicopter-ish as they got older. Looking back on my childhood, I guess that technically I was maybe a latchkey kid, but I never felt unloved or neglected. My mom was home when we were very young, then went back to work when we were in elementary school. I don't remember details of after-school that young, but I know that from middle school on, I had after school activities (sports, band, scouts) that led into the evening. I have no memory of being home for hours on end alone, tempted to make poor tween/teen decisions.

Being a HS teacher, I would think you have some good insight on this. (the first part, not the second, get over it). I've heard it said that for a kid to be successful, two of the following three need to care: parent(s), teacher, kid. Thoughts?
  6. These jobs were not supposed to be sustainable careers, they are starter jobs, mostly for teens and the poor to build upon. SMH, the road to progressive hell is paved with good intentions.

Well, this thread went off the rails.
  10. Seems odd that they don't have those written down.

    GOP Governor

No, that was just the wording that the author used. It specifically addresses medical interventions: And it specifically allows mental health treatment: https://www.wyoleg.gov/Legislation/2024/SF0099
  12. Giving credit where credit is due: wiffleball suggested it, and I agreed with the thinking.
  13. Here is the link to the poll discussion in question: https://apnews.com/article/trump-trial-indictment-hush-money-poll-b3d9a555993faf22e6ebfaf798bfbd2b I just got it from the earlier link that was posted. According to the article, the same polling company has found about 1/2 of people think Trump is guilty of the classified docs, and Georgia. But not this NY traveshamockery.

I think both can be true: The average American acts more entitled, and younger people are particularly bad about it.
  15. Actually, I asked that same question from the opposite angle, within the thread calling for the removal of Alito and Thomas. It's a fair question to ask IMO, in both cases. I would argue that it's relatively easy to replace a NY Superior Court judge (or whatever Merchan is), whereas a SCOTUS recusal leaves an unfilled void.
  16. Why do you say things like this? It's meaningless. If you have a link to someone who actually analyzed it, it's useful.
  17. I stand corrected on the daughter. From Squissy: Much better. Also, I don't know if there is anything in the law about jury pools. I doubt you do either. This is an interesting read: https://civiljuryproject.law.nyu.edu/i-the-law-regarding-the-fair-cross-section-guarantee/#:~:text=The Sixth Amendment to the,the community.” Taylor v. A lot of legal mumbo jumbo, but I think an argument could be made that political affiliation is an applicable group for the Duren test, combined with the trial being a state (not city) trial and so jurors should have been chosen from throughout the state. Basically, I would question if Manhattan is a representative "community" for the political distribution within the entire state. I'm just spitballing here, thinking what might be attempted for an appeal.
  18. My bad, he could have testified, just not to anything particularly useful. Also:
  19. Well, I would argue that there is a difference between universally known and (nearly) universally despised, within the Manhattan population. Also, I imagine that if a person had TDS and wanted to put the OMB away, he/she could fake their way through a questionnaire. Now, you might argue that the opposite is true (a MAGA person there to free their hero), but I would circle back to the political leanings of Manhattan.

My daughter went to the ER, and they confiscated her insulin pump because "they needed to control ALL her meds." A few hours later, no insulin ever arrived from the pharmacy there, and her sugar was through the roof. My wife and I were apoplectic and raised holy hell until they gave us her pump back. Fast forward, she is in the ER again, and they wanted her pump. We told them they would take it over our dead bodies. We won that standoff.
  21. I was more talking about the 2/3 of people who didn't think he did anything illegal. But to the fair outcome, keeping the trial in Manhattan which voted 86% for Biden last time (IIRC), the judge staying on the case even though his daughter has worked for the Biden campaign, are both a little iffy. I'm not a lawyer, but things like not allowing the Federal Elections Committee chair testify seemed iffy.

She's OK, thanks. She is the one who moved to NYC last summer (another topic where I received a lot of good input from folks here). So that is a little scary, having her so far away. My wife gets her blood sugar measurements on her phone, which is good because she occasionally goes low (potentially fatal) in the middle of the night and the alarm doesn't wake her, so my wife calls her to make sure she wakes up and gets some sugar. She did get an endocrinologist appointment, which is difficult for adult diabetics to do, but is required for renewing prescriptions (side note: there is no cure for Type 1 yet, but patients need to get prescriptions re-authorized for... why exactly?).
  23. I thought this was interesting, the last paragraph: That's more level-headed people than I thought; only 1/3 of the country is TDS OMB lemmings. Perhaps there is hope for us after all.

No spreadsheet. It takes less than a minute to see someone's content in their profile. Also, I've had long PM exchanges as well. But mine were in topics like: with @penultimatestrawdiscussing treatment options before my surgery, and @DonSmy throat cancer buddy which spans from my suspicious symptoms to adjuvant radiation and beyond, and @RaiderHaters Revenge who provided me products to ease my chemo journey, and @Artistawho clued me in to wear iced gloves and slippers so the chemo wouldn't kill the nerves in my extremities. And that's just the cancer-related ones. I've been fortunate to meet many Geeks in person as well; most recently, @Bertand his (then future) wife in Vegas, and dinner with @Bier Meisterwith our wives and his daughter when they were in Phoenix visiting ASU. Back in 2009, my daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. We started doing what is now called the One Walk fundraiser, and I posted here about it in case anyone wanted to donate. Many posters donated thousands of dollars total every year. I will always be grateful for the generosity people showed. I've developed many friends here; some I've met, most I haven't, but that doesn't make the friendships any less real. Add to that, with my laryngectomy it is difficult for me to speak. Communicating with folks with the written word is much easier for me. So I don't consider my time here a waste. You drive by every once in a while, make some seemingly witty comments, then disappear. That's cool, this place means different things to different people. But you wondered why I spend time here, and now you know.
