    Chinese covid biolab in California

    This doesn’t seem ideal
  3. The CNN article includes a photo which presumably is near the scene -
  4. I hear you can use old PlayStation controllers from Amazon for that, but they don’t always work
  5. The police are denying that they "prevented reasonable or safe attempts to rescue," so yeah, that part will be the most telling from the bodycam footage, assuming there is audio of the conversations with the civilian(s)
  6. Yes presumably someone would have had to hold onto the other end, unless they tied it to a tree or something. Yeah the more surprising part of the story (if true) would be not even allowing other people to toss him something, but yes, if someone really wanted to jump in I'm not convinced the police should have legally been allowed to stop them.
  7. So your argument is the police in the story from the OP were "in control of the situation"? Is that what you're going with?
  8. They dude died. They weren't "in control of the situation." FFS.
  9. How dangerous is it to throw a tow strap? A crashed car could have broken glass, leaking oil, etc.

  11. The general consensus among the normal people here seems to be we understand the cops not jumping in, but don't understand not allowing others to.
  12. There is no difference in the danger of the situation. Both could have resulted in harm to the civilian. In fact, one could argue trying to pull someone from a crashed car is more dangerous than trying to toss a tow strap to someone in a river. The car accident victim was charged with DUI so it's likely that both victims were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time
  13. The story in the OP wasn’t an “active criminal investigation” either. They were asking a guy in his underwear what he was doing.
  14. I’ve voted the same as you in the last 4 presidential elections.
  15. How about the car accident scenario? Here’s a Good Samaritan and a police officer helping a car accident victim. https://www.ems1.com/ems-products/cpr-resuscitation/articles/good-samaritan-officer-help-revive-woman-in-crash-GI8hik2D4n31aMlE/

    Coronavirus - Doomsday

Here’s an interesting study for you @Casual Observer (showing my work): Note the findings here are that the severity is similar to the ancestral strain, but most studies have found Delta to be more deadly than prior strains, so technically it is likely true that Omicron was “more mild” than Delta, as I’ve previously stated.

    Coronavirus - Doomsday

You’re getting close again. Yes, age is by far the biggest risk factor for Covid death (and most causes of death). But immunity (through either infection or vaccination) can significantly reduce that risk, which has been proven in dozens of studies. And because Hong Kong was one of the only countries where the old population still had a significant number of non-immune people, that’s why Omicron was their worst time in the pandemic, and caused significantly more deaths than flu.
  19. I’m not sure “refusing to allow civilians to help someone that’s dying” is a “protocol” though. Heck look at the article dogcows posted…the cops commended the kid for what he did, they could have easily said something like “while he made a heroic effort, it was extremely dangerous to do so” or whatever. If what you’re saying is true then wouldn’t that also apply to civilians rendering aid at the scene of car accidents, or people trying to break up fights, or any number of other situations? And clearly the cops didn’t have the situation “locked down” in this scenario…
  20. I didn’t bring your specific beliefs up. All I said was you claim to be a centrist but you’re not, which was after jerry started whining about me saying I’m a centrist.
  21. Not because you weren’t for forcing everyone to get it (I wasn’t either), because you continue to deny the mountains of evidence that it was effective at reducing deaths. Centrists don’t do that.

    Coronavirus - Doomsday

The difference between the two populations is that NYC had a high level of prior immunity among the elderly (via both infection and vaccination), Hong Kong did not.
  23. If I’m the cop, unless I had just witnessed the guy kill someone, I would rather he be alive than deal with the paperwork of someone dying on my watch. I probably wouldn’t jump in, but I’d like to think I would have tried to hand him something to grab onto and wouldn’t have prevented others from trying to help. Trying to help someone that’s drowning isn’t “jumping into an active investigation.” The cops would be free to continue their investigation once he was pulled out. @Engorgeous George seems to agree with the opinion that they probably shouldn’t have prevented others from trying to help. And since at least one of the civilians was apparently from a nearby business, they may have been more familiar with the water in the area and thus more comfortable with attempting to help. George are you a lawyer?

You’re almost there. Omicron does effect different populations differently. Generally speaking, it was mild for those with immunity, either from the vaccine or previous infection. But in 2022, Hong Kong was one of the only countries where the elderly, who were most at risk from all Covid strains, still had a significant number of people who were both unvaccinated and not previously infected.
