Dan Sez 0 Posted January 22, 2005 Cuts for Draft Picks Thoughts about the following: the week before any 6 round draft, a team may cut one or two players, in exchange for places in a continuational round seven and eight round. Player's salaries are NOT reset by these cuts. It does allow someone to dump a dumbarse like Ricky Williams or someone who has a career ending event (accident, death, arrest) if they wish. No restrictions on who can be cut, but again, this does not reset the player's salary cap cost like being cut in the March round. The players cut can be picked up in the coming draft by any team except the one who cut them. The player can later be picked up in Free Agent bidding by anyone. Comments? Scatterjack 0 Posted January 22, 2005 Just to clarify. If an owner dumps Derrick Alexander prior to a fraft, then whoever frafts him knowing that he already has a price tag on him. But if that player goes unfrafted, shouldnt his salary then get reset?
Dan Sez 0 Posted January 22, 2005 Salaries are only reset in the Waiver/Salary Retention phase. It makes record keeping cleaner and everyone knows were to look for the history of when someone is "reset". Salary Points and Franchise tags only matter in the buildup and process thru Waivers - a reflection of the NFL's first Free Agent sign/cut/commit phase. Lets keep all of that in one bucket. Yes, if someone cut Ricky Williams (as an example) in June because he declared he would rather spend his time on the beach blowing reefer, the someone could at least pick up an additional kicker or defense to give him some playing room instead of carrying a dead player into the season. But if someone thought Ricky would be back, his salary would remain the same because his former team kept him thru the last Waiver process.
whoisjgalt 0 Posted January 23, 2005 I'd vote against something like this. Here's my thinking: Consistency. Consistency would suggest that the same policy ought to be in play during the regular season. If a player gets hurt and put on the IR, it's very similar to this situation IMO. Wouldn't that Dungeon team likewise be entitled to cut the player and get a reward of an extra free agency point or two? To this, I'd say  - you've just got to live with it. Same idea with the preseason issues. It's like the NFL in some ways. Teams have to deal constantly with dead cap money and with injuries. Some of us get lucky and have few problems in a given year. Others have their title shots ruined (or rooned).

Pale Rider 0 Posted January 24, 2005 I don't like it because it rewards misfortune. Injuries or other craziness is going to happen to the owners of the NFL and I thought that we were trying to copy the league whenever possible.

FourTwoOh 0 Posted January 27, 2005 It may surprise some of you{I am, after all, the Ricky owner}, that I'm not in favor of this. Cases like Ricky's are an argument for a later draft date, not a special rule.
