Defense scoring

Recommended Posts

Points Against

0 - 10 points

1-10 - 7 pts

11-20 - 5 pts

21-30 - 0 pts

31+ -3 pts

Sacks - 2

INT & FR - 3

Safety - 2

ST & Def TD - 6

Also, to avoid inevitable controversy, we should define the rulings on irregular plays like offensive fumble recoveries returned for TDs and blocked FGs etc.

Makes sense.

Safety - 2

My feeling is that a Safety is worth two points (scoreboard effect) plus the value of a turnover. Remember that the team that scores the Safety also receives the subsequent kickoff. Hence it's also just like a turnover.

My initial thoughts...

1. I think since no offensive players have a possibility for negative points, the defenses shouldn't either. So, I'm not "for" the -3 point penalty for points given up.

2. I think this might be adding too many points for defenses. I won't say this for sure yet because I want see how it compares to other positions, but it looks like it'll add a lot. Also, if you look at defensive scoring as compared to other positions from last year, its really not that unbalanced.

Top Def - 190 points

#10 Def - 134 points

Top PK - 162.32

#10 PK - 124

Top TE - 181.4

#10 TE - 78.1 :(

The QB, RB, and WR are generally higher, but by comparison the buffalo bills scored more points than Fred Taylor, Kevin Jones, Jamal Lewis, Carson Palmer, Chad Pennington, and every WR other than the top 9.

I don't mind a little change to Def/St scoring, but its really not behind the other positions as much as I would've thought when I actually looked at the #s. I'm not so positive that the change is needed to be quite honest. The defenses already score more than the PKs and TEs (by a considerable margin), so I don't know if adding more points is a necessity.

Actually Buffalo kind of skews the numbers a bit. They have 190 and the next has around 160. Otherwise, defences are pretty much on a par with kickers.

I dont think it makes sense to award points only for a shutout and at that it is only 6. Points against is the most important element for a defence and we downplay it.

Not arguing the point, but the fact that there is no negative points on offence is completely irrelavent imo. If you start KC and they give up 35 points, you get a penalty. It is a bit more incentive to get and start a better D.
