mock Panthers draft

Recommended Posts

I guess I’m supposed to do something special for my 1000th post. But we have long established that I am an idiot, so it’s not like I can dazzle you with my erudite FF Nebraska-style Nowledge like the rest of you. I'm just here for the party. At least now I only have to take guff from people with five digit post counts.

But I can try. I don’t know if there are any other Panthers fans here during the offseason, but here’s who I’d like to see my team draft:

First Round #27 - Praying he falls to us: RB LenDale White, USC

DeShaun Foster could be an incredible back if only he could stay healthy. Eric Shelton is almost certainly not the answer. He Who Shall Never Be Benched and He Hate Me are both gone. Nick Goings proved even he is mortal when he got injured last year.

I believe in LenDale White. Call me crazy but actually I was more impressed with him last year than with Reggie Bush. As I recall, he got more carries and better stats. Pair him up with Foster and maybe we could recreate some of that Trojan magic right here in Carolina. White could beat up the defense and then Foster can come in and mop up, and maybe even stay healthy all year. One more rumor about White being lazy or fragile, about 10 days from now, and he could be ours.

Realistic expectation: OLB Bobby Carpenter, The Ohio State University

John Fox loves the kind of player that hungers to be on the field and will take on any role that will help his team. Carpenter is that guy. I know we just brought in Keith Adams, but after losing both Will Witherspoon and Brandon Short another linebacker is still a top need. Carpenter can also play DE, where we also could use some help, and thrives on special teams. Like Thomas Davis from last year, Carpenter is somewhat raw but can be developed (we hope). Some doubt his instincts but I place my trust in coachable players. If he can soak up enough NFL Nowledge to live up to his athleticism and his heart, he will be a monster.

Second Round #58Praying he falls to us: TE Marcedes Lewis, UCLA

I saw him two or three times last year and really liked his play. He can catch and he likes to hit people, what’s not to like? We need a weapon in this spot and maybe it’s a fad but I also am charmed by his basketball background. If we miss out on White and RB Joseph Addai is still sitting here, that would be peachy keen too.

Realistic expectation: OG Max-Jean Gilles, Georgia

Look, with a draft this deep at so many positions, somebody’s gotta drop. I’d love to see Gilles line up opposite Mike Wahle. Some mocks have us taking him in the first round and frankly that wouldn’t bother me none. But in a deep draft with OL being the deepest, someone we can plug in right away at RG or LT will almost certainly be waiting for us here. Mah Sooner Davin Joseph at LT is also a possibility here.

Third Round #89Praying he falls to us: WR Travis Wilson, Mah Sooner

Yes this is a homer pick. I’ve watched every game of his for the last three years and consider him to be significantly better than Brandon Jones or Mark Bradley. His struggles last year with injuries and a freshman QB who apparently learned in high school that one hopping passes was somehow a good thing may have caused people to forget about Travis. I am rather unimpressed with this year’s WR crop, although one of the few I do like, Notre Dame’s Maurice Stovall, could also be available here. Yes we have Drew Carter and Keary Colbert but I would be more at ease with one more potential WR stud in the mix.

Realistic expectation: FS Roman Harper, Alabama

NFLDraftcountdown has Harper penciled in here and I agree with their rationale. Harper is another John Fox kinda guy. If we keep collecting flexible guys like Davis and Carpenter, we will have the defensive depth to put a lot of combinations on the field and replace injured guys with another solid body.

Fourth Round #121: DT Jonathan Lewis, Virginia Tech

OK, this is the point where I start just making stuff up. I am no draft guru and there could well be good second day picks I just haven’t seen. Lewis could also be gone by this pick. Looking at all these scouting reports, the word I keep seeing for DL prospects is “undersized.” Lewis may be a touch shorter than average but has a nose for the ball and a knack for putting big guys on their backsides. A perfect disciple of Beemer ball and I’d love to see some of that on my team.

Fifth Round #155: QB Bruce Gradkowski, Toledo

Gotta love those MAC quarterbacks. I already liked him, and The Wildman has closed the sale. We need a QB of the future sooner rather than later. Stefan LeFors may be it, maybe not. I wouldn’t mind having a second option to study under Master Snake for the next 2-3 years.

Seventh Round #234: OT Michael Toudouze, TCU

What killed me the most about watching Mah Soonerz getting beat up by the Horned Frogs last year was how we let their QB have all the frickin’ time in the world. Well, that and the fact that we forgot how to tackle last year. Toudouze is raw but nasty and willing. Plus he throws the discus, how cool is that?

Seventh Round #237: DE Copeland Bryan, Arizona

Another guy who could be developed into depth for a number of positions and keeps getting better every year. Looking at the stats I think maybe he is inconsistent, but I like the fact that his high points were the times he was on TV outside Arizona.

Again let me point out that I am an idiot and this will certainly have nothing to do with who the Panthers actually select in two weeks. I got my list of draft positions from a Canadian so blame him if they are incorrect. But from what I’ve seen of the college game these last few years, these are all guys I would love to see putting some Carolina black and blue on our future opponents.

Great post. I actually did here that the Ginats are interested in Carpenter seeing as Coughlin loves Big Ten prospects. I can't remember if I saw that on KFFL or FFMastermind within the last few days.

It wouldn't surprise me. I'm guessing that DeMeco Ryans, the guy everybody thinks we should like getting here, will be tabbed before our pick, although if Carpenter goes earlier that means Ryans is more likely to be waiting for us. I picked Carpenter because it wasn't that long ago he was rated nowhere near the first round and he seems to have more questions about his game. But then there are questions about everybody past #9 or so. With so many OLB prospects rated relatively evenly around the late 1st/early 2nd, and so many of them (especially Carpenter) rumored to be switched to DE in the pros, I imagine the attitudes expressed in interviews will play a larger role than usual in many teams' final decisions. Carolina is a team more likely to want one of those tweeners, the Giants maybe less so. Since it's Fantasy football, between Ryans and Carpenter I just went with the one I'd rather have.

I, like you, felt LB in the first with such a good crop of them, but with the signing of Adams, and our released LB still out there, it's kinda changed. I too feel like White would be a good pick despite the injury and the man-boobehs. I don't enjoy having a second "rookie" RB with the team, but we are a run-first smash-mouth offense supposedly. Can't do that with fragile RBs.

I doubt Gilles falls to our 2nd round spot. I do think a TE might be targetted or even a safety. Here's my guess. If we go with White in the 1st, we'll probably go with defensive in the 2nd. If we go with defensive in the 1st, look for a RB that falls (Calhoun or Addai) or a TE in the 2nd. Pick up a servicable safety in the 3rd. Man...I'm sounding more like Kiper.

OMG! Another Panthers fan. Amazing. I was really beginning to believe I was the only one left.

I hadn't even considered the possibility that we could resign Short. I would like that, and it would make me feel better about being left out of the prime OLB run. I do think Shelton should be given another opportunity but I cringe just thinking about the notion of him coming in for an injured Foster. I do not believe in Brian Calhoun and hope we don't reach for him. We'd have to consider Laurence Maroney if he's still there at 27, and whoever gets him will be very happy, but I think White or Addai would be a better fit for us.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think both of my second round picks are pretty unrealistic. Also the more I think about it I'm less convinced that Davin Joseph would be a good fit for us. But I still do think we are well positioned to have some gift fall to us at 58. I get somewhat unexcited about the possibilities at TE after Dominique Byrd, rather let Coach Fox pan for gold in the late rounds there.

It's funny, the one mock I referenced in my post now has us taking Carpenter with Bubbeleh still on the board. They have caught up with the latest fad of White falling to the Steelers, which I'm afraid is just a symptom of the psychological disorder known as "Jerome Bettis man-love" brought on by their inability to accept the end of the relationship. I'm sorry people, it is time to move on.

Yep...big time fan. Keep an eye on the Ricky Manning Jr. situation with Chicago. Chicago is going to wait until the last minute to do something to screw with us pre-draft. If we lose RMJ, we get an extra 3rd round pick, BUT it would really impact our 2nd round choice I believe. No TE. You'd see a safety/CB player most likely if there's a decent one available. Minter isn't getting any younger and with the loss of McCree (man that dude could hit), we're going to be in the need for safety competition/replacement in the next few years.
