Rating 49ers' draft busts

Recommended Posts

We were in the office scouring for photographic evidence of Rashaun Woods when someone noted that ``he's the biggest draft bust since Druckenmiller.''

Sadly enough, that's open for so much debate. So we took a look at the 49ers' first-round picks since the Jim Druckenmiller debacle of 1997:

1998: R.W. McQuarters. Became solid CB in Chicago and is still in the league. Coulda had: S Tony Parrish, seven picks later and now a Niner.

1999: Reggie McGrew. According to NFL.com, he made a total of nine tackles for the 49ers, but that seems like an overestimate. Coulda had: Broncos LB Al Wilson, seven picks later.

2000: Julian Peterson and Ahmed Plummer. Can't argue here; they were fine until they got the big money years later.

2001: Andre Carter. For two years, a star in the making.

2002: Mike Rumph. As a cornerback, he's a so-so safety. Coulda had: Steelers G Kendall Simmons, three picks later.

2003: Kwame Harris. Of all the problems a Stanford guy can have . . . the snap count? Coulda had: Chiefs RB Larry Johnson, one pick later. Ouch.

2004: Rashaun Woods. By the first mini-camp, Mike Nolan had dropped him off the depth chart. Coulda had: Patriots TE Ben Watson, one pick later.

2005: Alex Smith. Scary thought: Will we ask this question again in two years?

We have to go with Harris, considering the player they passed up. (But they already had Kevan Barlow, you say? Yeah, well, the Chiefs already had Priest Holmes.) But you could make a case -- unfortunately -- for Woods, McGrew, Rumph or McQuarters.

Sh!t, most of these guys are Canton-bound compared to the stiffs the Lions have chosen over the past seven years.

You have to give Smith a break. No o-line! I don't even think Manning would throw more TD's than INT on that team.
