I made the mistake of renting this movie as a way to kill a couple hours while my hangover from the previous night wore off. Unfortunately this is one of those movies where you have to pay attention to who is who and what is happening with the plot and story - not someting that is very fun when you have a pounding headache.

 

That aside, it was pretty good. I'm not into sad ending, lost love type flicks in general, but the scandal story driving the plot was enough to keep my interest until the end to see what happens. Think "The Fugitive", but replace any scene resembling action with depressing scenes of poverty with Africans struggling to survive amonst rampant malnourishment and disease.

 

If anything else, this film acts as a loose documentary to the travesties and situation in Africa and the fat-cat attitude of 'civilized' societies towards this and other impoverished nations. Is it an eye opener to see how other less fortunate than yourself dealing with famine and HIV/TB while you sit on your ass on the couch with a bowl of popcorn? Yes. Do you WANT to feel that deep sorrow and helplessness from watching them? That is the question to ask yourself before you see this movie.

 

Although it recieved rave reviews from critics, I'm really not into this kind of flick. And since I base these reviews on my personal tastes, I give it 2.5 out of 5 Rat's Asses.
